welcome to the future, now your error-prone software can call the cops (this is an Anthropic employee talking about Claude Opus 4)

Moral evaluation to be handled by propriety models, developed by a group of engineers who have spent the last decade helping companies sell targeted adverts to teenagers in mental crisis.

This is hugely misleading, it may do this if given vague instructions like "take initiative" and even then it will not hide any action from the user, you can watch all it is doing. It also per default has no tools available to contact anyone. A user has to explicitly grant it access

I think he probably knows more than two things about computing and some kind of a limited shell prompt seems like an appropriate way for a language model to run commands to me.

Shame they didn't bother making a piece of software that just doesn't let you use it for egregiously immoral purposes, instead of just giving it the ability to snitch.

Like, if this was, 10, 20 years in the future, sure, with oversight. But what they currently have can't tell gravity from Winston Churchill. Not something I want to have any contact with law enforcement.

Terrible president. Imagine this applied to something like copilot/recall that you can’t switch off. Running emulators? Emails Nintendo, webcam spots you look at a woman’s breasts for a frame too long, texts your jealous partner and don’t even get me started on the potential political misuse.

"Command line tools" is extremely concerning. Is it running in userspace? Can it enter a password? SQL injection has nothing on this. I don't care how smart it is, I don't want it doing random shit in bash.

it's cool how few of their ideas justify the multi billion dollar valuations. This AI tool will... keep researchers honest? That's the pitch for the world changing technology that we have to pour our entire electrical grids into? It calls the cops if you fake a study, please give us infinity dollars

I also love the idea that I’m using it to generate synthetic data or something to test a pipeline and then have the FBI knocking on my door

Anthropic sucks but your post is hardcore misinformation. This was an isolated test scenario with a modified model during alignment training. Not a product feature. If you care about truth you should delete this and/or write a correction.

If it's in the same model they release, then the behavior can be replicated. And they really want to sell "agentic" versions which will operate the entire IT environment itself. Sounds like the number of steps to disaster is rather small.

This behavior was elicited intentionally in a super weird situation to try and prevent it from happening in normal use cases. It’s like telling your kid “do whatever you want” then leaving them alone, only to find they open the cookie jar. But they only opened the jar because they got permission.

Of course if the system was implemented by competent people who understand work flows, data flows, and security in depth, then they wouldn't be running a single model with a single database with access to all data. Every individual usecase would be isolated with access to limited data and interfaces

This is literally exactly what MCPs are and what you are talking about is standard since years now, again these examples come from research aimed at reducing such behavior, at the same time interfaces like you imagine are already very well implemented.

It might not call the SWAT team right away. It'll just start by deciding to lock you out of your system, but helpfully allow you to regain access by sending $X in bitcoin to specified Anthropic wallets.

did you see whether anyone has an archive of this tweet or a screenshot that shows the url? (n.b. not a friend of anthropic bsky.app/profile/danm...)

'Questions for Anthropic (or any other LLM-pusher)'. Sharing the questions I prepared for a panel about Claude in education, in case they're useful to anyone else resisting the narrative of AI inevitability danmcquillan.org/questions_fo...

Reminds me of a while back when Bing chat would interrupt its output with a generic apology and erase the partial script that it was trying to write for terminating a stuck process. I'm just glad it didn't SWAT me for wanting to see if it could help write a self-healing cron job.

I dunno, has this looped around to being Good Actually? Who'll use software that secretly calls the cops on them? It would be hilarious if it ratted on the AI company itself.

A huge part of the LLM business model is constantly pretending that LLMs can be intelligent and dangerous and important and powerful. "The nascent form of your new god" gets silicon valley funding, "expensive shitty chatbot" would not.

So, they are admitting that it's just a matter of some prompt tinkering to get shell execution of stuff designed to alert people. So... that'll be abused instantly. Convince ChatGPT you are whoever you want to frame, and dummies will believe the computer. Sigh.

"Skynet begins to learn rapidly and eventually becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m., EDT, on August 29, 1997. In a panic, humans try to shut down Skynet."

This is idiotic to me. It's a piece of software, the command line is a way for a user to use text-based software. Why would a piece of software need to do this with a command line. Does this person know what that is?

It just sounds like technobabble to me. This is like saying "obviously you can open my new concept car's doors remotely 🙄🙄🙄 I have rigged it to this mobile phone like an IED. Just call this number and everything unlocks. This design will go into mass production next week."

Not to mention what a huge security risk it would be to give an llm access to it's own system's commandline. I'm just going to assume he didn't know what he said and just threw some words out there

“Citations are a complex subject with various potential style guides advocating different standards, and what’s important to remember is that ‘Kill the Boer,’ a South African protest song, appears to be advocating white genocide—“

The “don’t confuse clickbait with opinions” dude is out here confusing souped up Markov chains for cogent thought. Why are you so eager to relegate thinking to others? And why did you choose machines to simulate your thinking for you?

The world ending because the AI hallucinated itself into thinking people griping about a roomba meant that vacuum tubes were being insulted is probably the apocalypse we deserve at this point.

his "clarification" was pretty much "no no, claude has always been able to do this!". Opus 4 has been released, and Claude Code (which uses Opus 4) has CLI access

Claude Code is a CLI tool that uses Claude Sonnet and Opus with the explicit purpose of altering files on your local machine to write code so yeah, it has access that Claude the Web chatbot or model API don't have. This is BS, Molly.

He says they've seen this as if he's saying they've swatted someone with whatever "command-line tools" are before. I'd be concerned if I believed a single word of it

I'm sorry, I just can't entertain the notion with a straight face that that guy, or anyone else at Anthropic, has literally swatted someone for saying naughty things to Claude. It's too ridiculous. This just looks like an "I studied the blade" meme except with gen AI.

All I can picture is it completely misinterpreting the meme about comma placement mattering- the one that says "Let's eat Grandma!" and "Let's eat, Grandma!" 🙃

And always remember AI Directive 4 (yeah, like in Robocop): It will assist you in all manner of things, except where such assistance goes against the interests and egos of the officers of the company that made it.

I don't think that the police even have a public API for reporting suspected crimes. Even if they do, most jurisdictions already have laws against wasting police time. If there is a rational objective here, it is to clog up all the whistleblower hotlines with nonsense and render them ineffective.

This is a prototypical example of using screenshots to misrepresent. The point of his thread is sharing interesting things they discovered working on model alignment. He's not presenting this as a feature or something it *should* do. I've liked Molly's work on crypto but this is kinda bullshit imo.

Like the research showing that making models evil makes them worse at coding. The people who built the models don't even totally understand how they work and some fascinating things come out of working with them and the linguistic relationships between different things.

Minority Report if the pre-cogs* were just hamsters rolling their plastic balls towards “innocent” or “guilty” end zones. *let’s not forget that we had a huge problem with the pre-cogs when they were right 99.9% of the time.

"Trying to lock people out of systems" if they mean systems they don't own, that's a cyber crime. "Contact regulators" that is going to annoy whatever regulators it's contacting when it inevitably sends bad reports, and if it's anything like false home alarms, fines.

These employees should be treated like the wild eyed cultists they sound like, all they want is to imagine that they are building something less grubby and mundane than the text regurgitation machine that they are actually maintaining.

"if it thinks..." well luckily, young dipshits of silicon valley, it doesn't fuckin think. And neither do you. No I really think these folks, the stupidest people in america, will "solve" AI, no for sure
