Governments have moved the goalposts on internet safety and regulation so far that it has become just a way to enforce the interests of private businesses. “Quad9 must block access to websites that are accused of infringing the copyrights of a sports broadcaster”
Quad9 helps protect internet users from malware and phishing. Now copyright site-blocking orders are pushing it out of France.

This (almost certainly) Russian government backed smear campaign against Talarico snuck past me. Of course it spread on twitter like wildfire, twitter was always great for smuggling propaganda and misinformation and is so much worse now with Musk. factcheck.afp.com/doc.afp.com....
Same Russian unit linked to this, two years ago. It helps them that it is all in support of a political party that is actively hostile to the truth. www.npr.org/2024/10/22/n...

I filed a FOIA with the FBI earlier this year for all records from Jan 1, 2026 onwards (limited for responsiveness) relating to the Silent ransomware gang, which allegedly sent people to victims' offices to gain physical access to their systems. No records beyond its IC3 flash in May, some withheld.

This video of Kevin Mitnick on 60 Minutes in 2000 was already floating around but I am trying to consolidate copies of important hacking related videos on Internet Archive because platforms remove things at random and accounts get deleted. archive.org/details/60-m...
Also a reminder, I've uploaded a lot of cool stuff relating to the history of hacking to Internet Archive over the years, FOIA docs, magazines, news clips and movies. archive.org/details/@rea...

By my napkin math, total Bell Labs research expenditures from 1930-1980 were on the order of $50 billion in 2026 dollars. AI companies have spent ~$1 trillion so far: The equivalent of ~20 Bell Labs histories. In its history, Bell Labs researchers discovered the transistor, the solar cell, the laser
Funny thought experiment: Tech monopolies have spent about $1 trillion on AI development so far. How good of a chatbot could we have built for $1 trillion by just employing smart people to answer any question people might reasonably ask and collecting all the answers in a big lookup table?
Trump has already tried to rope private companies into offensive hacking attacks against adversaries, this latest public move seems to cement direct comparisons with what China and Russia do with their military hacking units and government policies surrounding those units.
Lots to gasp and groan about in this article, but don't sleep on the creation of a USG agency maybe openly dedicated to creating disinformation. If you can't beat 'em? www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

I fully agree with this and since the early days of the Mythos panic I see this as where the net is headed. Everything will be locked down by default unless absolutely necessary to expose to the internet, everything will be behind access control lists, jump boxes and VPNs which will in turn create
