Turn the World Around
The theme of becoming engaged & making a difference jibed well with Jim’s efforts to make the world a better place. The Henson workshop designed a new group of characters based on African masks specifically for this performance w/ Harry Belafonte www.henson.com/jimsredbook/...
Jim Henson knew Harry Belafonte’s music well and admired his social activism. Belafonte was particularly impressed by the way #Muppet spoke to children of all cultures, having seen their joyful reactions during his philanthropic missions around the world
Women used to be present in computer work in higher percentages than they are today
Ever wonder what happened?
Turns out that the story of gender and the progress of computing are a lot more tightly linked than we once thought…

The Thomson TO7/70 was supposed to become the French computer standard. Its prompt invited you to choose between BASIC and cassette loading. The interface used the light pen pointer.
How to Become a River Raider: Hints & Tips from one of the First Ladies of Video Games herself: Carol Shaw.
You'll see her credited as the first female video games designer, but I feel it's fairer to call her the first (recognized) female console game designer employed within a company.
A couple of years before Carol Shaw started working at Atari, Joyce Weisbecker had already designed, programmed, and sold her first piece of video game software in 1976 for the RCA Studio II games console as an independent contractor, making her the first indie dev to boot.

Cray-2 was the fastest computer ever built as of 1985, processing at
1.9 gigaflops, or 1.9 billion floating point operations per second (FLOPS)
iPhone 17 processes at
~2,073 gigaflops, or 2 trillion FLOPS
Cray-2 weighed >5,500 pounds, while the iPhone 17 weighs 6.24 ounces— >14,000 times lighter

Labyrinth: The Computer Game (1986)
developed by Lucasfilm Games before #ManiacMansion#RetroGaming
Not sure if @davidbfox.com or someone else can help, but I often see this claim (that is also on Wikipedia): "Labyrinth received positive reviews and, in the United States, was a bigger commercial success than the film upon which it was based"
🤣This might be the single greatest miscalculated hit piece in history.
They may as well have titled the article, "If you like Obama (and you do) you'll love Mamdani!"
Using police resources to play basketball? This is great! And it makes the "whistleblowers," sound like some petty, salty, haters.
New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility.

I dug into this and it's not Generative AI. It's plug-in tools built into DaVinci Resolve to do artificial depth of field and parallaxing on images. This is stuff docs have been doing for decades and has since been more simplified with pre-built tools.
Ava DuVernay's 14th, about the 14th Amendment, uses AI to animate old photos that are in the public domain, and the filmmaker wants people to see the documentary for themselves before deciding how they feel about it.

We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of voice actor Eric Bauza, best known to us as the voice of Baby Fozzie on Muppet Babies.

Hey remember a couple months ago when I almost died from sleep apnea and begged y'all to be checked if you have symptoms of sleep apnea?
Eric Bauza just died from sleep apnea. We were the same age. Don't ignore sleep apnea.
Do you get a full night's sleep but wake up feeling like death? Does your whole body feel off in ways you can't explain?
Research signs of Sleep Apnea. Get a sleep test. You can't diagnose it yourself, cuz you sleepin'.

WHY AM I VOTING STRAIGHT DEMOCRAT?
Not because I'm a Democrat. Not because I'm a liberal.
Because every Republican on my ballot, and your ballot, is a Trump enabler.
Trump can't exist without these guys. They make Trump who he is.
They have to go. All of them. Clean sweep.
VOTE THEM ALL OUT!

This is the one I can’t get over when people tell me that Palantir is unusually evil. It is very bad, and it is very big, but California companies building computers and software to kill innocents is older than most of us on this website and we’re all pretty damn old.
a lot more tech people should read, as a starter, What the Dormouse Said, in which computers get bombed because they are associated with the defense industry.
Yep, when I titled the first chapter in my book “War Machines” I wasn’t being hyperbolic. And even tech workers themselves have long recognized this—for example, take this 1971 pamphlet from the group Computer People for Peace:
Beyond disgusted by even more rape allegations against the President of the United States.
"In total, more than 25 different women...have independently accused Donald Trump of rape, sexual assault, or other sexual misconduct."

Solar has overtaken nuclear. A decade ago it supplied 1% of the world's power. In 2025 it met three quarters of global demand growth.
Almost nobody saw it coming. I spoke to Jocelyn Timperley at BBC Future about why.

The U.S. has no national law for paid parental leave. But in states that do, more dads are using the benefit, sometimes more than moms. The change comes as Americans say having kids is unaffordable.

Regular reminder that when you go to things while sick, you are giving those germs to people with autoimmune disorders, you’re passing them to someone’s newborn, to someone’s elderly parents.
It’s “just a cold” to you but it can and does severely impact countless people.

Awesome and somewhat surreal day today. Michael Lewis is in Pittsburgh to promote his book Blockers.
He visited with faculty and postdocs from our department this morning.
I get to interview him tonight on stage at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Hall tonight.
A part of this not mentioned is that Texas used to let kids transition. I volunteered at a camp for trans kids in Houston when I was in college (pre transition I know I know how did I not know I was trans). Guess where part of that camp was? Texas Children’s. That’s how much we lost
its insane how not many people are talking about how republicans with the help of several moderate democrats are building out the largest abusive medical conversion therapy operation in modern american history
The internet can be pretty gullible about tech products, but congrats to everyone who called exactly what this was going to be used for from the first moment they saw it.
