Welcome, new Blooskers! So many of you fine folks just followed me through starter packs, so you may not know who the heck I am or what the heck I do! I'm an artist, author and adventurer who travels the world making comics.

Hey remember a couple months ago when I almost died from sleep apnea and begged y'all to be checked if you have symptoms of sleep apnea? Eric Bauza just died from sleep apnea. We were the same age. Don't ignore sleep apnea.

Ryan Estrada@ryanestrada.com

Do you get a full night's sleep but wake up feeling like death? Does your whole body feel off in ways you can't explain? Research signs of Sleep Apnea. Get a sleep test. You can't diagnose it yourself, cuz you sleepin'.

I'm not the one who made a plot line about how the ghosts are victims of cruel experimentation. What do you want me to scream at them and have them associate me with the doctor who did this to them? Hell no, I'm gonna be chill, treat them like the humans they once were, and hope they're chill back.

Stop making things X-Men. Sometimes a story is about feeling alone because of a supernatural aspect of yourself no one can explain or understand. Now they're all retconned into "surprise! We know exactly what this is and there have been shady secret agencies both causing and fighting it all along."

Okay, apparently if you successfully avoid recommended videos on any social media site for a decade but send your wife one (1) otter reel it turns your phone into a 24 hour otter video delivery device and I am all the way into it.

It's otter baby training season in the river by my house so I get to see little dudes catch their first fish all by themselves and their mom totally didn't do all the work and let them think they caught it how dare you.

Usually I only see real otters in the dark but one time I saw a dude who found a rock under a streetlight and stood on it to show off his fish to everyone and then did an exxagerated nomnomnom with a scrunched up with deliciousness face like the guy on a pizza box.

The best flex businesses could do right now is credit their artists and graphic designers to hype being human-made. This could be the biggest boon to artist credit since DC Comics beat an anti-werewolf censorship law by crediting Marv Wolfman.

Just a reminder that if we're prepared to put Art Spiegelman on the "No Coverage" list for using AI slop we can sure as hell put anyone on it. Zero tolerance means *zero* tolerance.

Oh, shit. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

This is how you create curious kids. Our cartoons used to be weird and inexplicable as hell, and as such became a lifelong puzzle where decades later we solve mysteries we thought we'd forgotten about.

Shaenon K. Garrity@shaenon.bsky.social

My favorite in this category remains the Warners' crossover between Apocalypse Now and the suppressed Jerry Lewis Holocaust movie The Day the Clown Cried, but let it never be forgotten that Pinky and the Brain devoted an entire episode to sending up Billy Jack

Remember when an entire episode was a line by line recreation of a viral 1970s bootleg cassette tape of outtakes of Orson Welles halfheartedly narrating a frozen peas commercial?

Not a single parent has filed a book challenge in Palm Beach in two years. The district just removed 1800 books anyway, because AI told them to. There are many reasons that is unthinkable but let's not forget AI DOES NOT HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOKS. IT CANNOT READ THEM. It just makes crap up!

Florida Freedom to Read Project@flfreedomread.bsky.social

Palm Beach pulled 1800+ titles from its school library collections because AI flagged them for review. Media specialists and principals must sign attestation forms verifying their libraries are compliant with vague law. None of this is normal. freedomtoreadproject.substack.com/p/when-ai-de...

Imagine doing something as bad as book banning, and also doing it so badly. I don't know if this is the same custom AI that recommended banning imaginary books I made up, or if they just asked ChatGPT. Hopefully we get a list of those 1800+ books soon, keep an eye on @flfreedomread.bsky.social.

I know there are a lot of these stories, but they just keep getting incrementally worse every time, by small enough degrees that they feel samey but us 6 years ago wouldn't have believed any of this. We're metaphorical frogs in boiling water.

I already called this situation Reverse Jaws but it's also Reverse Free Willy because they keep freeing her and she keeps saying SCREW YOU and coming back. We have so many shark horror movies, where's our shark A Star Is Born?

Ryan Estrada@ryanestrada.com

YOU GUYS WITHIN HOURS BUKANGI SAID EFF THE POLICE and bit her way back to Busan! She's a city girl through and through. She can't go back. She won't go back. She can't live without the applause. She's a star.

I've had two library events where nobody showed up. The first was a Chicago Public Library event where ICE was literally outside the building clearing out the street. We did the event anyway to an empty room as an F You to La Migra. The second was today, just because errybody tired.

Zoom visits are fun because sometimes it's an auditorium of 200 people and sometimes it's an excited teen who likes the book, an old lady who just likes events, and a rando they grabbed out of the magazine section because they felt awkward to have only two people.

Both kinds of visit are AMAZING. Big groups create a diverse discussion, small groups get really in-depth conversation. Only awkward one was the Zoom where everyone, library included, had cams and mics off and would not respond in any way so I talked for an hour with no idea if anyone heard me.

Most whale stories (cowards): "if you really think about it, the whale is kind of a metaphor for his dad." Whalefall: "Hello whale who is my dad" "Hello son, I am a whale and your dad" "We have a complicated relationship, whale and dad" "Nom nom nom i am abusing you and also love you son" "Ok dad"

I checked and it's been a full decade that I've been trying to peer pressure every publisher I work with to license Columbo comics so I can write one, and yesterday I finally bullied @ironspike.bsky.social into it and the rights holder sent back an immediate no. Someone hates money!

I know not everything needs to be recycled forever but an entire generation inexplicably obsessed with a howcatchem procedural from the 60s wants to write comics and Lucas arts-style point and click adventure games and then also buy those same comics and games.

I mean, it's probably like, genuine love and respect for Peter Falk and stuff and any of us would be mad if someone else did it but everyone thinks that if THEY did it, it would be respectful and perfect. But still, though.

My reaction to this article is 50% "this is much bigger and more dangerous than I thought, we have to be so careful" and 50% "you can string them along into organizing a fake book club? Rad, let me scrape my spam folder for a good one."

Oisín McGann@oisinmcgann.bsky.social

If you’re an author who’s been receiving verbose AI scam emails on a daily basis, and you’re wondering how gullible and ego-driven people think you are, this article helps to explain them. Sadly, they are successful enough to have been built into a big business. www.thedial.world/articles/new...

Yes it's very sad and messy all around, but also I get three scam mails a day offering to help me market "my" book Garfield and I could do a whole Zoom pretending that I created Garfield.

We used to hide the fact that the "Anjeon City" in the book was actually Changwon because the history we were telling wasn't exactly positive but the mayor gave us an award for telling the story and the city is celebrating it so we will say so proudly.

Usually updating my website means adding more stuff but I've done so much stuff that this time I'm removing all of the podcast and film sections because I do so much dang stuff it makes my website too complicated. Let's focus just on comics. All my other work is secret stuff you can find elsewhere.

Except Big Data. I accidentally deleted that from existence a while ago by letting a domain name expire and no one ever noticed so I haven't bothered figuring out how to get it back up again.

My mom (a) is a super tough lady who refuses to admit even the slightest inconvenience (b) always needs surgery and (c) can't have even the mildest anesthetic. All her updates are like "voted today, then got my knee replaced while fully conscious, and went to Farmer Jack. Normal day."

Her stories feel like either a letter from a revolutionary war amputee or a treatment for a Saw reboot but she acts like it's the third most memorable thing that happened that day compared to funny faces her cats made.

Voting is the coolest. It may not always seem like it because you're often making imperfect choices. But make the choice that inches us closer to where we need to be, and you just helped save the world.

I almost made a much snarkier post, but after interviewing and working with so many people who risked their lives for the right to vote, and learning how the dork-asses they elected instead of true evil were a step toward true change, I know it all matters as a first step.

Just remember that it truly is only a first step. If the best your ballot will allow is to pick someone you can push to do the right thing sometimes over someone who actively wants to destroy you, get ready to do the pushing.

There seems to be a real concerted effort to mass-trick celebrities into seeming MAGA. From Daily Wire movies using fake production companies and scripts to lock actors into contracts to headlines that misrepresent real quotes.

Right after that I saw a post about how Daniel Radcliffe was raging against woke remakes changing characters to be black. It was him when he was 20 talking about the hair color of a dang horse. That is Onion article levels of willfully misunderstanding. I don't think it's all a coincidence.

That said, Rob Jennifer Harvey Nick and Brad, if I was tricked into a Daily Wire hate-propaganda contract, I'd walk and take the lawsuit. I'd rather lose my house. I'm more concerned with actors being more careful about what they agree to than us judging them, but it's calculated to wear us down.

I was disappointed about Danny Trejo's pro-ICE movie. But his son said they used faked names and an altered script. At 82 Trejo had no idea what Daily Wire was even if they'd been honest. Now he's locked into a contract with strict non disparagement clauses, and many others seem to be trapped too.

I saw a headline about Brad Bird leaving Disney because "they got political and abandoned their principles." It was an anecdote about the 90s when office politics made him deal with managers who didn't care about animation principles like squash and stretch. He didn't leave Pixar because of woke.

At some point, instead of constantly reminding everyone that I am stubbornly holding onto an incredibly unusable phone that is far too small for my giant fingers, I will just have to get a new one because the number of ridiculous typos in my social media posts is ruining my reputation as a writer.

One of the free virtual workshops I do is a Choose Your Own Author Visit. Readers roll dice and pick cards from a deck to decide what happens. Recently, someone finally chose my favorite card in the deck. I truly had no idea how to use the tarot set I got free at a festival, but I I improvised.

It is a super fun workshop because one person picks a question card and we have a serious discussion about history then 20 seconds later there's a beatbox battle.

I have like 500 cards at this point, and I customize for each event, but I won't spiil any more just in case a future attendee is here. The best are the joke cards I don't expect anyone to choose. (They do) If anyone wants it at their school library or book club say the word.

More pics with President Moon.

There's one man I've wanted to give a copy of Banned Book Club to since 2020. Moon Jae-In. But I couldn't because he was busy being president. It was the last panel of our book! Today, we got the chance. But that wasn't the best part.
