"...a dependency on equipment you buy once is very different from a dependency on fuel you buy every month. When a shipping lane closes, a fuel-importing economy feels it within days. If solar panel exports stopped tomorrow, the panels already installed would keep generating for decades."

NEW: Hormuz reminded fuel importers that buying energy cargo by cargo means importing every price shock. In TIME, María Mendiluce and I argue the response will decide who becomes the electrostates of the next decade. @wemeanbusiness.bsky.social time.com/article/2026...

Most important thing for a household to do in terms of consumption is replace their key fossil burning machinery (car, furnace, water heater, range, dryer) with electric options when they can.

NEW BRIGHT SPOTS: Even on 100% gas power, heat pumps cut emissions by ~48% and EVs by about half. The authors of an “electrification doesn’t cut emissions” paper made a series of compounding mistakes and used misleading assumptions. Here's why. janrosenow.substack.com/p/heat-pumps...

Electric motors are so much more efficient that internal combustion engines that even on fossil fuel power they still cut emissions substantially. Run them on 100% renewable power & the impact is even greater. Switching to renewables saves money, improves health, environment & climate. 🧪💡🔌☀️💨💧🔋

Really enjoyed starting my day with this post. The drop in the grid’s carbon intensity is incredible. “two decades ago the average carbon emissions per kWh were around 500 g CO2 / kWh. In 2025 it was 121 g CO2 / kWh.”

I really enjoy reading Bright Spots every Sunday as they are uplifting and optimistic. Today's: Heat pumps and EVs cut emissions today. They will cut them further every year as the grid gets cleaner.

What most people don't know: when you fill up a petrol car most of the energy never moves it. Petrol car: 13–21% of the crude oil's energy reaches wheels. Electric car on today's UK grid: 43–45%. Electric car on wind+solar: 77–80%. That's why we don't need to replace fossil energy one for one.

I thank those who provided constructive comments and helpful challenges. Given the interest I decided to dedicate a Substack piece to this and also cover heat pumps in a similar fashion. If you want to read them subscribe for free to my Substack janrosenow.substack.com

EU gas prices are now at more than 90 Euros per MWh. The last time we have seen prices like this was in December 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Do EVs and heat pumps deliver no carbon savings until the grid is fully decarbonised? A recent paper claimed so. It's wrong. Even running entirely on gas-fired power, both cut emissions by about half. Our open-access response in Environmental Research: Energy: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

Pakistan's solar boom is really two booms. One is 6.1 GW of net-metered solar where the grid works and tariffs bite. The other is hidden: ~40 GW of modules imported, much of it off-grid where outages hit 8–10 hrs/day. Our new paper summarised here: www.pv-magazine.com/2026/10/09/p...

pv-magazine.comPrices drive Pakistan's metered solar, outages drive hidden uptake - pv magazine GlobalA new study finds that Pakistan's net-metering capacity is concentrated in the best-served, higher-income utility areas, while much of the country's solar sits unregistered, off-grid and behind the me...

Excellent article in El Pais on the impact of Hormuz on electrification this morning. I told them “Electric cars and heat pumps are between three and four times more efficient [than their fossil equivalents]” archive.is/VfFsl

And “Every combustion car and every gas boiler sold today leaves us exposed for 15 years to the next oil crisis. And each new industrial facility that runs on fossil fuels consolidates an import-dependent infrastructure for decades."

BIG NEWS: Up to 75% of global energy demand could be electrified by 2050 with technologies we already have. Progress is slow and the barriers are mostly political and institutional. Today we launch the Oxford Martin Electrification Accelerator to change that. oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/electrification

NEW RESEARCH: Energy bills nearly doubled in 2020–23. But England's official fuel poverty rate barely moved. We think it’s time for a better fuel poverty indicator. Our paper sets out an alternative that responds to price shocks. doi.org/10.1016/j.en...

NEW RESEARCH: Pakistan's solar boom is one of the world's most impressive renewable deployment stories. It is also a story about a broken grid, high electricity prices and inequality. This is the first peer-reviewed paper to take a deep dive into it. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Recommended reading: "Renewables are just being added on top of fossil fuels." Wrong comparison. Demand grew 75% since 2005 regardless. Without wind and solar, power sector CO2 in 2025 would have been 28% higher. Excellent analysis by @zekehausfather.com www.theclimatebrink.com/p/what-if-th...

theclimatebrink.comWhat if the world hadn't built wind and solar?Clean energy does not simply “add to” global energy use; it displaces fossil sources that would otherwise get built.

In September, 34.5% of cars sold in Germany were fully electric. "Deutsche Hersteller profitierten von dem Boom allerdings kaum." (However, German manufacturers hardly benefited from the boom.) As if it took them by surprise.
