Electrification of transport is essential to ensure Europe's energy resilience and achieve climate targets. This requires public EV charging infrastructure in the right places, at the right time and at the right prices. In this new @regassistproj.bsky.social report we present 7 key building blocks:

I completely agree. The way in which flexible energy resources respond to and then also influence prices is a very important yet under-researched topic. It's good that Lion Hirth is looking into this.

What do superhero duos and EU climate policy have in common? Both fall apart when one partner doesn't show up. 🦸 Our new staff blog looks at the duo soon teaming up to fight CO₂ emissions from Europe's road transport: the CO₂ standards for cars and vans, and the ETS2. 🔗 theicct.org/weakening-eu...

Similar ideas also floated around the EU: a sort of multiplier for the CO₂ targets (as proposed for EU-made small e-cars) if an EV would be capable of bidirectional charging / #V2G. As the article rightly points out, capabilities are not the crux; what matters is that users are able to use.

EVs are rapidly taking over the auto market in Europe, with trucks not far behind. Oil-burners are on a fast track to the bin!

Transition Times@transitiontimes.bsky.social

In TT#18, we review sales figures in Europe and find electrified cars took a 69% market share for the first 9 months of 2026, while sales of oil-burners crashed to 28%. Electric trucks are hitting double-digits and even V2G is finally getting the green light. www.transitiontimes.net/tt-18-evs-ar...

The problem that demand for their electric models is higher than expected is something many car manufacturers have in common.

“the all-electric CLA has already been registered over 71,000 times since its market launch in September 2025, averaging around 5,400 units per month. In comparison, the predecessor model – which was only available with an internal combustion engine – achieved an average of just 3,500 registrations”

This year has been a particularly wild ride, with NEV sales plummeting in Jan after a decade-long purchase-tax exemption ended – only to recover in a matter of months For fun, here's a version of the chart with teeth:

Combustion-car sales volumes have also fallen two-thirds, from 16.1m in the first 9 months of 2017 to 5.6m in 2026 Next time you hear about job losses, factory closures or financial struggles at western carmakers, remember these stats – and fact that China is world's largest car market

In September, the world’s largest car market continued a clear trend: 67% of new cars have a plug (47% battery electric and 20% plug-in hybrid). That’s huge. Or, as they say in Berlin, it's still a multi-million market for cars with combustion engines.

What most people don't know: when you fill up a petrol car most of the energy never moves it. Petrol car: 13–21% of the crude oil's energy reaches wheels. Electric car on today's UK grid: 43–45%. Electric car on wind+solar: 77–80%. That's why we don't need to replace fossil energy one for one.
