Star Trek's original crew of the Enterprise has had three main iterations. TOS, the "Kelvin" reboot in 2009, and the recent Strange New Worlds version. The Kelvinverse actor Anton Yelchin died in an accident a few years ago. Walter Koenig died today. And Strange New Worlds isn't that far yet.

So for the first time in 60+ years, despite there being modern reboots, there's currently no actor who is the current Chekov. I dunno. I don't have a real point. Just a little weird it played out that there's three Kirks, three Sulus, and zero Chekovs now.

I've been saying basically this for ages. Even before the recent AI boom. Generating code isn't an inherently good thing, and devs have always known that. Managers in the 80's got made fun of for tracking kLOCs as "productivity." Code is like CO2 or garbage. Maybe necessary, but not the goal.

The billboards blame Newsom for Prop 40 which he opposes. Which is a great example of why his pivot to the right won't work for him. He's forever a San Francisco liberal to far too many.

That it'll fail because they lack sufficient consolidation and centralized control does not make it trivial that the president of the United States is trying to steal elections and produce an illegitimate sham Congress. It is open rebellion against the Constitution and morally tantamount to treason.

Streaming shows can get way too indulgent with long episodes because there are no fixed timeslots. But old TV shows were sometimes obligated to stretch to fill a timeslot by any means necessary, and that was sometimes terrible. You know you are in for one when an ep starts with an ad for itself.

And then the cold open between the ad and the credits includes multiple flashbacks to previous episodes. In slow motion. And then it cuts to a woman climbing a rock wall, by herself, with no dialogue, for a while, before she falls in slow motion. Then lays on the ground...

It's incredibly rare that I think a political ad has a clear message, well presented. This actually seems like a good one though. It does a good job of presenting and explaining a real issue, without resorting to vapid consultant nonsense.

NEW AD: Have you seen these anti-Talarico attack ads? Elon Musk paid for nearly all of them. The world's first trillionaire knows if he drags the most corrupt politician in Texas across the finish line, Ken Paxton will owe him everything. Elon Musk: Texas is not for sale.

There is little meritocracy or competition when it comes to Democratic consultants—they get paid the same regardless of how their candidates perform in the election.

The tech industry has been going so far with this stuff that I am starting to ask myself questions like whether it's even possible to ethically use a typical desktop computer any more. Can't use outdated software - AI will hack it. Can't have Win11, it has plagiarism machine built in.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

I have completely finished my ballot. ... Correction: I have completely finished one page of my ballot. Honestly, still a massive achievement. Some of these races are undocumented and some ballot measures are tangled up for no good reason.

The ballot can't even include a complete text or description of the effect of ballot measures, just a summary. For some reason, campaign finance penalties, fire dept oversight, ballot process changes and "other changes regarding ethics, elections, and governance" is all one tickbox.

If this shit was broken out into "single-feature commits," it would be way easier to come to seven clear conclusions rather than one conclusion on an incoherent package. Yes, this would make the ballot even longer, but somehow still easier to get through and more reliable for policy decision.

They should reboot the Prom Night slasher movie franchise. But now it's about Programmable Read Only Memories. This is how you cash in on updating existing IP for the digital age.

I'd make fun of Senator Schiff if his only response was to send the DOJ a sternly worded letter. Here, Senator Schiff is... hoping *somebody else* will send some words to the DOJ. Powerful stuff.

🚨 LA City Controller Kenneth Mejia has subpoenaed LA28. The organizing committee has 15 days to hand over key financial data: “LA28’s refusal to comply with my Office's request after years of withholding information that they are contractually obligated to provide to the City of LA is unacceptable"

Alissa Walker@awalkerinla.bsky.social

Controller Kenneth Mejia making good on his promise to at least attempt to get LA28 to open up its books. "Today's data request is part of the Controller's robust financial oversight process to force visibility into the spending, commitments, and assumptions built into the Olympic Games budget"

For conservatives, having somebody to blame isn't about understanding how to fix a problem. It's just about the cultural ritual of blaming an out-group as a way to define and share membership of the in-group. Journalists don't frame "Biden's Fault"/"Thanks Obama" accurately and get distracted.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

One of the jokes I saw is that Russian tech companies are using new questions in job interviews like, What do you do if "terraform destroy" was executed without Terraform?

Jay in Kyiv@jayinkyiv.bsky.social

Ukraine's new campaign of destroying Russia's data centers will prove devastating for Putin's economy and war machine if the White House is unable to prevent it. The chaos we're already seeing across Russia is only four days into the campaign and 3 facilities targeted.

LA is HOT. But does it have to be this hot? Did you know shade from a single tree can drop temps by 20° or more? Yet working-class neighborhoods like South LA, East LA, and the Valley get the least tree coverage and bear the brunt of extreme heat. Let's finally cool things down for everyone.

Running old Final Cut Pro (pre-X) is getting hard these days. It's in a twilight age of too old to be current, and too recent to run on hardware that is easy to emulate it. I wasted so much time getting it installed in a PPC VM, but it doesn't actually run.

If I was on a hiring group and somebody brought up "the candidate had an iced coffee during the interview" as relevant to the hiring decision, I'd be utterly fucking baffled. It has literally never come up as a thing to even mention or make note of.

I’m sorry, but if you bring an iced coffee - or any damn beverage at all - to a job interview, you’re disqualified. It’s not hard, people.

It's hilarious that Huang things not knowing his address, zip-code and phone number are a mark of how he is cognitively off-loading to technology and Klein doesn't seem to press him that what he's actually obviously doing is using the fact that he's rich to off-load onto other humans.
