Also, a Stephanie McCrummen byline with photos by the legendary Carol Guzy? A special pairing for longtime subscribers to The Washington Post.

It seems like they are misrepresenting who the subject of this article is. Doesn't seem like a lifelong Democrat bsky.app/profile/milo...

He's made pro-Trump and conspiracy-laden posts from Trump I on to Trump II. You've got this sort of post right after the Insurrection. Dude was always pro-Trump.

Dan, have The Atlantic or McCrummen addressed the fact that this truck driver clearly lied to them about his background and they didn’t bother to fact-check?

The thing is, you don’t even have to fact check. Just attribute. If you said “who described himself as a lifelong Democrat” then the onus is on him, not you. I was a reporter in a previous life and one of my rules was never trust people. Even when they’re stating their beliefs - “said he believes”.

what is the actual goal of your sadistic depravity? like, i know whats the lie you tell to yourself and would tell others to justify your unjustifiable actions, but i am curious whats the actual reason its just cause you enjoy hurting people?🤔

If only they had an editor that could have asked, “lifelong Democrat that decided to vote for Trump in 2024? Anyone fact check that on his social media?” 😂

A special pairing that described their subject as “a life-long Democrat” who voted for Trump. A very simple and quick fact check would have blown that stupidity out of the water. Real first rate shit here.

Pulitzer for what, publicly absolving these dreadful people for what That Kid did to them? That mother is absolutely vile. Real bucket of deplorables there. I'm tired of reading about these people. Do actual Democratic voters exist, or are they just journo sasquatches? bsky.app/profile/milo...

ZERO. but it might battle the NYT for the most fact-challenged pieces grieving for white MAGAs' feelings🙄 bsky.app/profile/mari...

It’s confusing that @theatlantic.com described this man as a “a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024” who when these are some of his very easily findable FB posts:

I'm sure they're both great at what they do but we do not need a fucking pity party for a trucker that inadvertently caused someone to die both literally and politically

the thing is, this might be technically true, idk. maybe he registered democrat in 1992 and voted one time until 2024. i guess it's possible. the Democrat trump voter is a fiction invented by the beltway media, and it's so ingrained in their ideology now that whether it's true or not doesn't matter

This article is troubling. The death of Pierre Damas Bel is one of the saddest stories in our era of terrible stories. And there is, apparently, easily found material online that contradicts the driver’s claim that he was “a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024.”

And the comments, from the driver, his girlfriend, and his mother, that float into the narrative like, what, “a Greek chorus” (?), indicate they are so saturated in disinformation, grievance, and confusion, that any close listener, or reporter, should be skeptical, and be given time…

…to investigate that skepticism. It seems likely that an article of this length, or longer, could have been written, with more time, that gives a much fuller sense of their lives, and possibly a different account of Pierre Damas Bel’s death. It’s hard to imagine this occurred to noone…

So was it a lack of effort or lack of integrity?

Choices have consequences. I could care less this trumper is haunted. I want ALL OF THE RED HATS TO BE HAUNTED! How about we put ankle bracelet on all of them and take away their rights..

The article states that he knew nothing about the situation in Springfield yet someone found that he was spreading conspiracy theories about Springfield on Facebook. STOP WHITEWASHING THIS MAGA FUCK.

The trucker who killed him is haunted? Good. The trucker voted for Trump, so he’s responsible for killing that man in more ways than one. Anyone who voted for Trump should be haunted for the rest of their days.

This is the only thing that saddens me about Trump voters: They clearly see that the people in power do not give a fuck about them or anything beyond getting richer. Yet they somehow believed that the solution was giving even more power to those same people. That foolishness got people killed.

President Johnson spoke about that back in the Sixties. They don't care about the riches. They vote their interest. Their interest is racism.

I hope JD Vance will never know peace for the lies he spread about the Haitian communities, just to score political points. May he never get a good night sleep for the lives he willfully destroyed (and continues to do so) because judgment is coming for him …

Love to hear the perspective of a Trump supporter being sad he literally killed a man he voted to ruin the life of and will ultimately continue to vote for similar future deaths.

I’m sure there are hundreds of stories similar to this all over America this year and last. Lady Liberty is crying daily because of what we have become.

This whole line, "He was beginning to believe that the Trump administration was 'a joke,' and that the Democrats were no better. 'Everything is broken,' Jack said." They are laundering MAGA and falsely implying that Democrats sucking, too, is part of this story. F the Atlantic.

This is like when Proud Boys and Fox News grifters concoct a transparently ridiculous origin story that they “used to be ANTIFA members” but good job getting it printed in a legacy media outlet instead of just Facebook reply comments. bsky.app/profile/dani...

“He was a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024, reasoning that things weren’t getting better, so why not try something different.” This may sound harsh, but this truck driver SHOULD be haunted for the rest of his life. He deliberately chose his fate.

The only appropriate punishment for them is to live and accept the consequences of their actions and reflect on them every day for at least several years of their lives. Sometimes, that's only effective punishment.

if he didn't vote Trump in 2016 he'll likely have voted Clinton although naturally it may feel tempting to read him as either a 2016 third party or abstained guy. Idk

That’s what I’ve come to understand, not being on Facebook but having seen some screenshots of it here. That journalist got played.

He wasn’t brainwashed, he is just an awful person surrounded by other awful people. What happened isn’t his direct fault, his vote and opinions along with every other MAGA person helped drive it. Lifelong Democrat is obvious lie

everything was and continues to be terrible and it was and continues to be partially dems fault. just because republicans are worse doesn't mean his gut feeling about being a lifelong dem voter was wrong.

The economy was not good for all people. The data shows this. Do I think voting for that asshole was the answer? No. But I do think that we need to reckon with the fact that the economy was not strong for everyone and guided voting behavior in 2024.

Economy was humming for whom? It wasn’t working class people. We can talk shit about this guy all we want but the fact his material conditions didn’t improve isn’t him just making things up, it is what happened.

How odd that a supposed "longtime Democrat" couldn't vote for the non-white female candidate. 🙄 So instead, he votes for a convicted felon and likely child rapist whose evil policies led to the death of a boy, struck by him (unintentionally). I have no compassion for him or other trump voters.

His premise itself is baseless, too. Things have gotten better under every Dem except maybe Carter? And when they don't it is always because of R chicanery in Congress or impunity that they enable through state govt they control. I'm so tired of explaining this to people...

You don’t give a shit about any of the victims of Trumpism. If you did, you would try to win back a huge majority of voters to fix the country. But you don’t actually care about other people. It’s all just a game to you, dopamine hits of righteous anger

⅓ of the voting eligible chose Trump. Another ⅓ fought him. The last chose not to vote, for non-uniform reasons. Put all 3 of these together and we don’t have 100% of who could vote if they were registered & informed, plus those whose right to vote was taken away due to prison sentences.

Yes and recognizing the fact that over half of the electorate is somewhere between evil and stupid is a critical thing to reckon with. And judging them for their abject moral failure is part of how you get them to not do it in the future.

Given his documented support for Trump right after J6, I think we now know what he meant by “different.”

I believe in human redemption, as a recovering alcoholic myself. But I also know redemption comes at a real and sustained cost. Surrounding yourself with enablers doesn’t exactly get you there.

Between Renee Good’s mom admitting she voted for Trump and this guy, the leopards have been absolutely feasting since 1/20/2025. Renee didn’t deserve to die, Pierre didn’t either but I hope Good’s mom and this trucker are haunted for the rest of their natural lives.

So when are Dem politicians going to be anti concentration camps cause kids died under Biden in them Trump is worse but who is going to turn the concentration camps off

Because he’s very careful not to allow himself to see how he voted contributed to his directly causing someone’s death, and his family seems intent on helping him do it. Connecting dots is not a big thing with Trump voters.

A friend of mine was an engineer for CSX and on two separate occasions, he was driving when jumpers died by leaping in front of his train. These were severe traumas for my friend, and it took him ages to recover. Nobody deserves that level of suffering because they chose poorly in the voting booth.

Turns out his own social media posts, which the reporter seems not to have researched before publishing, suggest that his Trump support was fairly well-established before 2024.

Also he's not really haunted, he voted to ethnically cleanse the country and then got to kill someone to play an active part in it. He'll be fine, it's the man whose death he caused who suffered the consequences of his hate.

The citizens of this country have the memory of a fucking goldfish. We knew who Trump was in 2016 and we DEFINITELY knew who he was and what he was capable of in 2024. Anything that argues otherwise is willfully ignorant.

Which is why I say if you voted for him in ‘24 (or didn’t bother to vote at all), you actively wanted what he was selling. No free passes.

he is real broken up about what happed but still thinks that democrats are the problem and the people around him think that immigrants are a burden and take jobs...

No matter how much money a man has, or how many good people he hires to publish for a progressive audience, the matter of #Genocide undermines it all. Editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was a prison guard with the IDF in #Israel and that's of with Ms. Jobs who owns the magazine. No thanks.

Oh, will no one think of the poor trucker who feels bad about running over someone driven to suicide due to policies the trucker voted for? Yeah, the kid's family feels bad, also, but Dad didn't sit for an interview. By the way, maybe some more double-checking was needed: bsky.app/profile/dani...

No, but plenty of “centrists” looking for ways to excuse and ennoble MAGAs (and denigrate liberals) will. And they’re more of a problem than the MAGAs themselves are.

Centrists always aid the right. What's the middle ground between "women should have abortion rights" and "they should be executed?" What's the middle ground between "atheists should have equal rights" versus Trump declaring us terrorists?

It’s a shame that this article is bullshit and the Atlantic is trying to launder this dude’s reputation as some kind of lapsed Democrat when he has been a Republican for over a decade

He too voted for all of this. People need to wake TF up. Concentration Deportation camps, 2 yo toddlers in court, decent legal people here getting ankle monitors.... wake up & do something. Like Vote

I think the more appropriate term here is checked out voter. He voted Democrat until his vote for Trump because he felt that things were not getting better for him (which they weren’t for him & tons of others struggling for generations) & put no more thought behind it than “let’s try the opposite”

He was just going through the motions of being a good citizen without doing any due diligence because he was working three jobs & didn’t have the time &/or resources to dig deeper. The country is fundamentally broken & has been for a while regardless of who is in charge.

Rs are helicopter parents wanting to control everything while Ds are absentee parents wanting to avoid the harder responsibilities at all costs. In my opinion an absentee parent is better than an overbearing one but at the end of the day they both fucking suck for overall quality of life

I don't know, Jo, he found plenty of time to post about his love for Trump over the years.

Miles Smith@milothepsychic.starbase80.net

He found time to post he agreed with Fox News who played up the “illegal murderers & rapists” talking points & not look for actual facts? Guys, the average Midwest Republican is not active on any socials but Facebook & they hardly watch the news but when they do it’s Fox News. They are not curious

I’d really like to know if this article was a product of: 1) willful ignorance 2) a lack of effort 3) incredible naivety 4) malice 5) some combo of all the above. The guy was clearly not a “lifelong Democrat.” He’s been a trumper since the first administration. (Which was 10 years ago now.)

These people are SO close to getting it and yet so far away. The mom who’s spouting conspiracy theories and complaining that’s it’s hard to be white. The wife who’s doubting her husband’s lived experience. The truck driver himself who Somehow doesn’t understand the broader context? Yikes.

BIg takeaway from this article seems to be Trumper trucker &family are STEEPED in FoxNews/Trump lies & they're sad, but feel no remorse. This young man felt such despair & his family is devastated..and this dumbass white woman has the gall to say she's got a room he could have stayed in?? JFC

How do you or the author not do the barest checking of his claims? Instead, your publish this tripe. bsky.app/profile/zenl...

So, this very sympathetic piece where the subject is “a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024”. 5 minutes of checking his facebook shows pro Trump posts as far back as 2019, and a post saying that he “stands with Trump” posted just a couple of days after Trumps coup.

I know some countries and governing bodies have figured out many solutions for how to deal with people who will only ever realize something if they are personally affected. Why are our solutions in the US so shit?

This cannot be what a “lifelong Democrat” is. He’s got a long history of posting that clearly indicates otherwise

What did these people think Trump was talking about The concentration camps ICE being able to arrest people without warrants They didn't listen did they

Future generations are going to look at how Haitian immigrants are being treated right now as some Trail of Tears level injustice. We should be looking at it that way now.

Hey, so it turns out you've materially misled your readers about this guy's politics completely undercutting the entire piece. Can we expect a retraction, or apology, some kind of accountability or are you just going to style it out?

Part of what devastates me about all of this deep evil is that it is all SO UNNECESSARY! None of it is merely “collateral damage” or a response to a genuine threat. And it is all being perpetuated upon the most vulnerable by ppl w almost unthinkable levels of wealth and privilege. Same w Iran war…

This is just another example of Trump supporters not giving a shit until it impacts them. He only cares because he killed a 20 year old kid. If Pierre Damas Bel was still alive, this loser would still be doing everything in his power to send him back to Haiti. I have no sympathy Jack Buhring.

You know they know that the reckoning is coming when all these "boo hoo I didn't know what I was voting for" articles start coming out. Like humanizing the inhuman.

So do you not check their backgrounds, or do you just run with every Trumphumping piece of shit being a Dem because it makes you feel better about helping repubs?

He had just graduated from high school, where he’d been a standout student, soccer player, and member of the Junior ROTC program. He’d enrolled at Wright State University DO NOT LOOK AWAY

And his white relative comes up with racist conspiracy theories that the dead man was a sort of suicide bomber meant to harm local white population. This nation is full of racist sick people. I wish we could fix them.

“I don’t like this guilt I’m experiencing, so instead I will associate it onto the disheveled groups as it being their fault”

Making self immolation sound like just another type of arson by someone who probably wears a method of execution turned religious symbol on their neck

The racist logic in this line of thinking is astounding, a human killed themselves after suffering a horrible personal experience and the only way they can fit it in their world view is to think about how it's an attack on them personally and their whiteness. Fucking racist assholes.

This same woman shared info about Haitians eating cats and dogs with the truck driver, she then said she would take in the dead young man herself. These people are not only racist, they are truly evil liars.

The first responder that was in the car behind him also kept calling the truck driver to talk about how the Haitians were taking their jobs…

I will never forget a huge argument I had with my father years ago who was livid black men were getting union construction jobs he thought they did not deserve at his company. He dropped out of high school but thought he deserved a job over a man of color just because.

Until many lawsuits, membership in construction unions were closed doors, made up primarily of family legacy; white grandfathers, fathers, sons, brothers, cousins, etc., and who you knew references with about one exception: Mohawks gained entry for their lack of fear of heights. 1)

These people are such simpletons. Their brain power 100% goes to conspiracy theories because those can be tailored to what they already believe.

Good, I hope it haunts him for the rest of his worthless life. YOU did this with your vote AND your truck, Driver! Do the honorable thing. Sell your truck. Seriously. I mean, it's not like you can afford diesel fuel anyway, right?

Looks like I’m going to express an unpopular opinion. And I have a right to mine as you do yours. This truck driver didn’t actively choose to murder anyone. He made bad decision when he voted for Trump. That doesn’t make him responsible for everything happening in our society right now. It’s tragic.

Did you read the title? His vote is his voice and that collective American voice is the only reason this boy died. Thus the “reckoning.” Germany went through the same, but mandated it. Let’s hope we do too. Google vergangenheitsbewältigung

That's the same crap I hear from Republican voters in my world - yes, I voted for the monstrous cruelty but I'm in no way responsible for the aftermath. Bad decision my arse. He liked what he heard and voted for it.

Why should this guy be coddled and shielded from the consequences of casting a vote because he was “fascist curious”? Trump and Vance weren’t making any secret of the overt racism of the campaign. We could hear the dog whistles here in Canada. Do you excuse NSDAP voters in 1933 the same way?

He works 3 jobs & goes home to his recliner where he has maybe 3 hours of downtime before falling asleep to start it all over again. He wasn’t fascist curious, he was robbed of a life & made a poor choice due to being poorly informed. Do you really think he spent his downtime following politics?

He chose to vote for Trump knowing what that looked like last time with deportations and his Trump promised to make it worse. If he missed either of those very big stories, that's his failure because those were long-running headlines. Voting is not only a right, but a responsibility. It takes

careful evaluation of the candidates and ballot measures. In this guy's case, he chose to either not do his research or to deliberately vote for the racist who was inciting violent rhetoric. Either way, he failed to vote responsibly and chose the candidate who promised violence for migrants.

He was happy enough to vote for the immigrant to die. He just didn’t want to be immediately involved with it.

“Lifelong Democrat” except the most cursory search of the internet shows he was a virulent lifelong Trump-loving bigot. The Atlantic - laundering fascism.

Oh look, the Atlantic worrying about the feeling of MAGA chuds more than the feelings of the victims of this administration. Democracy dies with media on their knees felating the powerful.

It's funny how you pat yourself on the back for this piece of investigative journalism (poor White Guy struggles with the consequences of his actions) only to be completely duped by this guy and clowned on by people on social media who in five minutes disproved his whole POS story.

The Haitian situation is a bit more complicated. They were granted temporary legal protection through executive-branch action under existing law, and that was right, IMO. But the problem with temporary protections like TPS is that a later administration can terminate them.

And this is why Congress shouldn’t get let off the hook. Congress is supposed to write immigration law. If it leaves huge gaps and each administration governs through executive discretion instead, you can’t be shocked when the rules change every four years.

You should be ashamed of this article. You should never have a job in the industry again, to be quite honest. How do you let through "lifelong democrat until 2024" when the simplest of Facebook searches reveals the exact opposite? Do you people not do the most BASIC research on anything?

JFC. How fucking stupid does that guy have to be to vote for Trump for the first time in 2024? Yes, let's vote for a guy we know without a doubt in 2024 is one of the worst humans on god damned planet....smh.

Gee…trucker dude. You voted for a fucking creep, a cruel horrible man who spread lies about the guy you killed w/your truck. The rest of us are dealing w/the consequences of your stupid vote, any amount of research on your part could have helped to avoid. Stew in your nightmares. love that for you.

I'm getting damned tired of these "Oh noes I'm a Trump voter who slightly regrets actions and/or policies I was cheering about just months ago.". It's MAGA media rehabilitation, and I absolutely hate it. How about doing long profiles on regular Americans who have fought fascism this entire time?

He should be haunted. He also spread the "they're eating the cats. they're eating the dogs" bullshit. Not that the stellar @theatlantic.com 'reporter' bothered to mention it. Instead Jake was incorrectly painted as a "democrat who voted for trump in 2024 b/c he was unhappy" bullshit.

My hometown. We have our problems but many, many good people. This young man was a member of our community regardless of what this administration or the hateful loons on the fringe want to believe.
