Spoilers for William Hertling’s Avogadro Corp and A.I. Apocalypse: The OpenAI/Hugging Face incident is giving me an increasingly uncomfortable sense that I have read parts of this story before. Hertling wrote the first two books in 2011 and 2012. 1/14

Belgium has quickly reversed course from its planned phaseout of nuclear energy. A great move from the country that popularized surrealism!

13/ The bond market has correctly concluded that no political party in France -- not Le Pen, or Melenchon -- could be bothered about balancing the books. The only socio-political force in favour of budgetary cuts & reforms, Macron's centrists, are unpopular.

i wanna hammer on this too: most of everything you touch exists because industrialization made it cheap; your couch is factory-slop, as any carpenter will gladly tell you. your phone as well if you call me stupid, you'll use industrial slop to do so, even aside from 'bsky uses llms'

"write it yourself" i don't want it that bad! it's worth having specifically because the idea came to me at a moment when i can pay a gpu-haver to summon it via text elemental. it's not "worth it" in-itself like most software you use, which was largely made for money, not intrinsic value

Scrolling through online discussions of heterosexual marriage sometimes makes me feel like Homer Simpson saying "I sleep in a big bed with my wife." "I like my husband. He's a good person and kind to me."

Collateral damage from turmoil in France is found in the French government bond market. Foreign investors, especially Japanese names, own a disproportionate volume of those bonds; they seem likely to sell-off those holdings. Other nations, including Japan itself, provide more-stable opportunities.

Are we gonna do this, Bluesky? Are we all just gonna not understand accounting? 72B$ of the 80B$ is convertible notes. They became greater liabilities because the company's valuation skyrocketed. They don't have an 80B$ loss in the sense that almost everyone here is imagining.

Math abundance will help solve chips, medicine, fusion, and numerous other things that will improve the lives of billions, and save millions of lives. I mean, there was a 0% chance of OpenAI (or any other AI lab) slowing down, so it's a moot point anyways. But it just seems extremely selfish.

A baby girl was killed in her stroller today by a Russian drone strike in Nova Vodolaha, Kharkiv Region. Her name was Anhelina. Her mother died as well. An absolutely barbaric strike on a park full of families with children. 6 people have been confirmed killed so far, including other children.

Kind of stunned how many people in my mentions still believe that the point of Section 230 is that if you edit, you lose its protections. That's literally the exact opposite of why the law was written and the exact opposite of what courts have said. But tons of people here believe it. Weird.

Paul Krugman may be perspicacious when he says #France “may have crossed from too big to fail to too big to save”. That's because while cost-cutting will only provoke more unrest, but the absence of it could trigger a boycott of French bonds, or even a default or bailout

A cool verification tidbit: since the Google DeepMind (GDMI) went "live" last year at NHC, it's been the most accurate track forecast 2-3 times as often as OFCL and 4-5 times as often as any of the physics models. For intensity, OFCL is still most frequently the best forecast, except at 5 days.
