so I think this is an interesting conversation around AI because from where I’m sitting right now there is one “that’ll never pencil” that turned out totally wrong (inference margin) and one “that’ll never pencil” that still looks pretty good (orbital data centers)

smoked haters got absolutely smoked on the facts because the entire movement against AI power is built on fruit of a poisoned tree opposing the growing and dangerous power of AI (and its purveyors) requires reckoning with the reality of how it works, not plugging your ears pretending it doesn't

I know it’s really distasteful and dispiriting and gross to think about, but you won’t understand Trumpist politics or the status of women if you don’t understand that a lot of people aren’t just in denial about the prevalence of rape; they are affirmatively pro-rape.

That’s also why Vivek isn’t exactly lying when he says he didn’t mean to say Acton lied about being raped as a child. He doesn’t think she lied; he thinks that being raped disqualifies her from office, because she belongs to the class of people power is wielded against, not the class that wields it.

it is stupid easy to build this kind of event signup page with atproto and an LLM btw. i am pretty sure this is better than email signup for the user, not least because i don't even have people's email to potentially spam them, i only have their atproto identity which is public anyway

I think this is broadly correct but it’s a symptom not a cause- the reason I’m deeply invested in the democratic choices of e.g. Brazil is that there’s a really big difference between Lula and Bolsonaro! a characteristic of democracy is that it allows for very frequent big direction changes

Look, I'm an evolutionary physiologist, ok? I believe in biology, not this sentimental feminist claptrap. Women are biologically optimized to be nurturers. They run households, they don't fight lions. That's why they're the only ones we can trust to govern our complex, industrialized civilization.

lastpositivist.bsky.social@lastpositivist.bsky.social

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

there might be feelings better than having your kid snuggle up asleep on you but there is no feeling like it. I am a simple ape and probably you are too

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

I am 100% in favor of people who don't want kids not having kids, but watching your kids play on the beach on a day where all your responsibilities are asleep is a peak human experience of a type you will struggle to get elsewhere.

Too many American Jewish organizations will not call out the blatant antisemitism of a non-Jewish president saying that Jews are being "disloyal" if they vote for Abdul El-Sayed. I am so grateful we have this organization that will.

The Nexus Project@nexusproject.bsky.social

Yet another example of Trump's long history of saying that Jews are "disloyal" or shameful if they do not vote for him or his chosen candidates. According to him, one can only be a real American Jew if they support Israel specifically by voting for him and his picks.

read this if you want to try to understand the Israeli election landscape

In about 24 hours, poles will open here in Israel. In what is a strong contender for Israel’s most critical elections. The election pits Netanyahu’s extremely unpopular coalition against a non-coherent, but moderately more liberal, opposition. Here are some thoughts as we head into it.

I learned tonight at the Seahawks game that throwback nights aren’t just the “good blue” jerseys. They also played a lot of New Jack Swing over the PA. And “What I Like About You” by the Romantics! Five stars.

Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

with permission I’m going to share this note which I enjoyed receiving. not sure xo would be useful for anyone or everyone but some people are finding it helpful:

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

new significant update for xo: this push adds the first of several planned modules in Kettle, which centralizes your contacts, enriches them, and makes them agent-queryable. basic idea here is that the store of who you know and what you know about them should be defragmented and you-centric.

there are some other tweaks in here to try to reduce context load on xo and generally get skinnier in terms of what it’s asking of you and of the LLM; it’s all in the notes. as always please please hit me with feedback and issue reports.

the answers it gives you will be informed by the union of 1) public info about people you know and 2) info about people you know in whatever of your private documents you've shown xo (typically emails, maybe conversation histories, that kind of thing).

Been reading about a lot of very bad but entirely ordinary people throughout history for the next season of Past Lives (Everyday Villains). This guy is utterly typical. 1) Doesn't think he's doing anything wrong. 2) Permission structure in a system of hierarchical authority. 3) Benefits materially.

don’t negatively polarize against chain restaurants imo. some are good, some are not good, it’s broadly unrelated to their chain-ness with the exception that when a restaurant first starts to chain up it’s usually a sign that they do their thing pretty well
