Some professional news: I have shifted into a new role at the FT as the paper’s Financial Investigations Editor. I’ll have even more scope to dig into the less salubrious nooks and corners of financial markets, while doing my best to follow the money on a broader range of subjects.

This story went up late on Friday and got less attention than it otherwise might have done. A sentencing hearing on Friday was told three participants in the Tory election-betting scandal - dismissed at the time as "a flutter" - would have made nearly £50,000 if undetected www.ft.com/content/510e...

Time is criminally underrated (well, not by critics, but it’s certainly under-watched). Best British drama this decade imo. Sad this is likely the final series, but it’s probably a good thing for my emotional well being. as.ft.com/r/5d5e74e1-1...

Now it’s out in the US, I think I can safely say that I was lucky enough to see an advanced screening of You Can See Everything a few weeks back and it exceeded my lofty expectations. Nathan Fielder takes things in directions you cannot possibly anticipate. How does he do it? Generational talent.

genuinely think that chartbeat and real-time audience traffic insight dashboards are one of the worst things to happen to the media industry. it found out what people read and wanted and public trust has pretty much only sharply declined since then

Update: the A7 entity involved has just been sanctioned by the UK.

Our latest on A7: a British businessman active in UK finance was named by Ilan Shor as CEO of VexPay, part of the A7 network, according to A7’s own interbal minutes (he denies it) www.ft.com/content/b3c4...

There is a corner of the internet I had never heard of before I started reporting this story. It’s called the “burnerverse”: a network of anon burner accounts ostensibly discussing college sports. But they have another goal: destroying young girls’ lives.🧵: www.wired.com/story/burner...

Amazing how many times Gordon Rayner of the Telegraph has front-run more critical reporters’ Reform scoops this year. Spoilers-as-a-service.

The media deserves plenty of criticism. We all know this. However, one of my least favorite long running lefty media critiques is "Why don't you use this specific legal language describing an uncharged criminal act in a headline?!?" Anyone with any real experience knows publications can't do that.

So here's a quote from @pablo.show that applies to not only his Clippers investigation but the best of what journalism can be: www.nytimes.com/athletic/756...

I should say, as someone who regularly has to meet very rich people at these sorts of places, I do enjoy dipping into this world from time to time. I cannot imagine it being the only social setting you occupy though. Private clubs etc are all very samey and sterile, gets quite dull quite quickly.

I had been hoping to have a Black Velvet in Sweetings in Nige's honour for lunch, but it's sadly still closed for renovations. Had to settle for fish and chips and a Guinness in the Sugar Loaf nextdoor 🫠
