think I managed to annoy this Detroit bus driver so much with my boundless enthusiasm and several questions that he just let me in for free so I'd go sit and stop engaging with him, so here's a nice cheapskate trick for you there I guess

Does *nobody* actually think more than a step ahead any more? When people on the right started calling their political opponents "NPCs" that was actually revealing. Because in any video game if you treat a human opponents like an NPC you generally get crushed

That this is in THE WASHINGTON POST is almost too much irony to bear.

My simplified BOE monetary policy function staffing structure: 9 people making a decision. 15-20 experienced people they want to discuss that with. Another 300 or so mostly producing the charts and data inputs which can now be vibe coded and hoping to eventually become one of the 15-20.

New Liz Truss book doesn't disappoint. Thrust is blaming the Bank of England for the Sept 2022 market fallout, especially its quantitative tightening announcement the day before the mini-budget. She claims that she and Kwarteng were "caught off-guard", blindsided by the BoE's announcement.

This is great, because most parents think of their children as callous dullards who hate animals, so it's really picked out the traits that makes her daughter unique, here.

cool, cool

Strongly agree. It's not unreasonable of the government to ask grown-ups to give half an hour's thought to what they would want to hand if the power or water went out overnight.

Coffee. The biggest ad campaign of my teenage years seriously suggested that instant coffee was something that sophisticated urbanites offered their neighbours in the hope of getting them into bed.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Ondřej Surý fixed PHP. Open source is completely wild.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

There was a whole rabbit hole I fell into years ago about how the British Army going into WW1 were very into the idea of indirect fire by rifles and MGs, and calculated the ballistic trajectories and angles the soldiers would need to fire their rifles in the air to hit the desired spot.

Lefty Twaddle was of course the foley artist on The Wild Bunch, famous for his ability to recreate the sound of horses hooves using only his left hand, which was badly disfigured in the battle for Iwo Jima

He's going to talk about the friends he lost in the retreat from Stalingrad.

I think it may be a feature of modern populism? So to be an heir you are either in or out the party. In, you have to take falls for the leader and are shown to be incompetent. Out, you must say increasingly radical things to be relevant that make the mainstream allergic to you.

On both sides of the Atlantic, populist movements get their shelf-life from their leaders. Reform has no heirs to Farage, and no other Republican can pull off Trumpism.

like vance, ramaswamy is a hateful, resentful orc of a human being, and the reason i think this will hurt him politically — where this stuff didn’t hurt trump — is that ramaswamy, like vance, is also profoundly unlikeable. he has no charm or charisma or anything. just a dipshit.

My unshakable conviction is that America could fix its politics by importing a dozen British journalists to sit in events like this laughing loudly.

JD Vance: "There is no person who hates the idea of people enriching themselves fraudulent over access to the government than Donald J Trump"

Please consume the sketch carefully. I don't have enough readers that I can afford to lose them like this.
