Also: are the Brazilian and Serbian election results the great news that they appear to be? (Spoiler: only one of them is)

There is no chance that Labour will hit their current housebuilding target. But hitting it over the *next 5 years* is entirely possible if Labour recommit to it. If they don't it means much higher rents - and a worse cost of living crisis.

Andy Burnham’s government has privately given up on reaching Labour’s target of building 1.5mn new homes by 2029, and ministers will refer to the goal less and less, according to government figures www.ft.com/content/285a...

This feels like the kind of thing that gets splashed in a newspaper – or bought up by Kemi Badenoch – as "41p a week" and risks becoming a millstone rather than a giveaway. If it's not very clearly part of a package, it could easily backfire...

I've just renewed our mortgage with our fixed rate from early 2022 expiring and it's costing several hundred pounds more every month now. Our weekly shop has gone up by £200 a month too. So thank God the Chancellor is bringing in a raft of measures that will save... *checks notes* £2 per month.

The electricity VAT cut just about works because it's worth £45, but it pretty much offsets the October increase in the price cap. There's an obvious comparator. If you end up with £21 a year vs...everything. Hmm.

The British syndrome, summarised: 78% of us say our high streets are important to us. But only 28% of us actually use their local high street even once a week – and only 53% of people said they used theirs *once a month*. We won't use it, and we won't lose it.

I have just spent the last 80 minutes reading, in full, Liz Truss's new book. I cannot recommend in good faith that anyone else does the same. But………it's quite something.

This is great, because most parents think of their children as callous dullards who hate animals, so it's really picked out the traits that makes her daughter unique, here.

A newspaper promising the first images of pedestrianised Oxford Street used a single screenshot from a traffic camera. Now, why didn't I think of that when I spent two cold hours on Oxford Street last night? www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/las...

The government has renewed longstanding advice in disaster preparedness, with a bit more energy than usual because lots of cyber stuff atm, bit of Russia, and particularly el Niño. Have you seen the weather this weekend? The media is doing loads of coverage because you're clicking it.

There really isn't much more to it than that. Disaster prep is just the latest discourse. Look at the actual advice, it's all pretty normal and sensible. There's no big secret D-Notice forcing the media to coverage it. It's just getting sweet, sweet clicks.
