One thing that I love about the film is how it captures a very distinct social setting and milieu. Lunch at Rules. G&Ts at Mark’s. A champagne reception at Oswald’s. Pints in a Shepherd Neame’s pub in Westminster. Discussion of Black Velvets over oysters by the sea.

I can see from the film that Reform, including Farage, are bang to rights. What I don’t get is what was the American businessman supposed to be getting from this arrangement? And why was that not discussed in the film?

I’ve watched again the bit where Farage potentially being PM is mentioned. The suggestion seems to be that the American donor has helped the (possible) future PM & that, as a result, he could be rewarded in due course. It’s a very large donation for nothing tangible. Some people have money to burn!

Big takeaway is the absolute state of the interior design of the gentlemen’s clubs they met in…one looked like the designer couldn’t decide on wallpaper, so just used all that was in stock in a Laura Ashley c 1994.

Haha. Oswald’s is very nice inside tbf and has a great art collection. It’s a shame they didn’t go to any of the Richard Caring clubs as a much wilder nouveau riche aesthetic. Makes me wonder if there’s a separate raft or donor wrangling happening around the less old money clubs.

I have a very little knowledge of private members club. My sister is a member of Soho House which is very understated and ‘safe’ in its design. The other is a local social club, which took its inspiration from an early noughties BHS cafe…

I should say, as someone who regularly has to meet very rich people at these sorts of places, I do enjoy dipping into this world from time to time. I cannot imagine it being the only social setting you occupy though. Private clubs etc are all very samey and sterile, gets quite dull quite quickly.

I had been hoping to have a Black Velvet in Sweetings in Nige's honour for lunch, but it's sadly still closed for renovations. Had to settle for fish and chips and a Guinness in the Sugar Loaf nextdoor 🫠

I once invited someone of this tribe to a party. He said after " I really enjoyed it, people were so varied, I usually only meet bankers and the like". I felt a little sad for that.

I will also say it was great fun in the 80s and 90s. And quite partial to dipping my toe in again. Someone well connected in the commodities market told me that Nigel was seem as a bit of a hapless joke there. I wonder if that is why he is so driven by money and prestige belatedly.

Yes, it's fun to dip in an out of it. Around my birthday, I am prone to taking a day off work and having a potter around St James's, maybe have lunch at Sweetings, but goodness me, even if you had the cash to do that every day you'd surely start to think that there was more to life that that.

Yeah, I think Sweetings is one of the old school finance haunts that actually has bags of character and is a very fun time. Similarly the Guinea Grill in Mayfair.

Surely Farage's greed, which makes him accept any and all money offered to him with no questions asked, is a massive security risk. A man with such an appalling lack of judgement cannot be let anywhere near No 10.

Well we’ve seen what he promoted in the past & he’s happy to down oysters & quaff champagne while threatening to remove other people’s human rights & cut people’s benefits if he gains power, while he himself takes £5m ‘gifts’. Oh he’s doing really very nicely out of it all, isn’t he 🤷🏻‍♀️

I guess you could call it a stout snakebite, but bloody hell that sounds awful. Black Velvets are the signature drink at Sweetings and I'm very partial to one. They do have a slightly metallic taste though, not helped by the pewter tankard that Sweetings serves them in!

That was a gateway drug to full fat Guinness for a lot of people, including me. Had no idea salt of the earth folks like Farage mixed it with champagne.

Discretion the utmost priority - in one of those meetings they were discussing sensitive info, while the waiter was serving at the table!

I wondered that but I think the key is Farage saying in the video that he’s an Americanophile. I think his reverence for the US is underpriced. And it’s also a dead end electorally. Indeed he’s so blinkered he’s ignoring the lessons from Reform’s very successful Italian counterpart.

Probably chose Wyoming as slightly off radar. If they'd made him a New Yorker, Reform may have easily googled him. OTH why the fuck didn't they do this anyway? Probably, as you say, 'he's come through with the money, who gives a fuck who he is?"

Exactly. Farage, too eager to play his two bob oneupmanship card than think, hmm, this very rich donor seems rather to be uncharacteristically prudent.

Yes I was wondering about that too. Maybe he had a back story about dad sending him to a British boarding school or whatever. Not a typical move for a Wyoming based hedgie though.

right I've done some guilt-tripping charity fundraising targeted at these people and they tend to be from the old south but I assume once you have 'proof' they will pay the bills you are happy to suspend disbelief

Not quite like for like but the American finance guy fascination in British elitism was explored quite well in Season 2 of Industry

Yes, I was interested in that too (the voice over did say he was supposed to have been gone to boarding school here and lives here). I always get the impression that Farage et al are wannabees cosplaying at poshos, so maybe he just came over like another of the same?

Allow a charlatan like Farage power & you rarely get it back, its like a cult & why Labour & the Tories will struggle to get Reform voters if they ever had them at all,Farage persaudes them their votes will count, laughing as he enjoys his oysters & black velvet More attention & cash is what's gained
