You are the CSS guru I learned most from, about new CSS features in the recent years. I dont know where you would like to go next, but if I can help in any way make that happen, do reach out please.

Matt Cassem
@sarcassem.me

I’m so very sorry, Adam. I know this pain all to well and the feeling of betrayal that comes with it. I know it’s cliche, but time does heal this. My outcome turned out to be the best thing to have happened to me. I hope it is for you, too.

Cenobyte
@cenobyte3.bsky.social

Really sucks, Adam. I totally get it. These giant corps don’t care about you. No matter what they said. There’s lots you don’t lose…the skills, the experience, who you are as a person. I know it seems tough but you’re going to recover. You deserved better and you’ll get it.

Alan Krueger
@alankrueger.social

I felt similarly back in Jan 2023's layoff. It's traumatic, but it gets better over time. I'm sure someone with your skill set and community engagement will find (or even pave!) a path forward. Check out the resources at xoogler.co if you haven't already.

sorry, man. BigCos are just casually throwing away talent and burning goodwill now. Sucks for everyone, but there will be second and third acts. These firms are creating their own future competitors in real-time.

Matt Clough
@clough.cool

Not to be a reply guy here — I don't know you, you don't know me — but the good people at Google, particularly those on Chrome and DevRel, are better than Google.

Matt Clough
@clough.cool

You and others inspired me to go after a DevRel role (I applied to the wrong one and the onsite kicked my ass 👎) and you and others will keep making the web a better place, probably at a place that can take the torch from Google at this point.

James A Rosen
@jamesarosen.com

So sorry, bud. That’s really painful to experience. If you want to pick up a short gig just bashing on some CSS, I (and I’m sure tons of others) would love to have you by my side. I know it’s not your dream work.

Scott
@scott2449.bsky.social

I, and many others, have been in very similar situations. It was earlyish in my career and eye opening. You will find something just as amazing and do great! You will never trust your employer again which is awesome 😎

Phillip Lovelace
@pixelflips.com

So sorry, my man. You’re not, and never were, just a cog. You’ve taught and inspired a whole helluva lot of us, and I hope you know that. One day soon, you’ll look back and see it for what it really was: their loss.

Keelin Jacobsen
@keel.in

So sorry to hear this! I learned so much from you via your role there. What a loss for them. Hope you land somewhere that properly appreciates you. Looking forward to the awesome things you’ll do and build 👊

Sara Soueidan
@sarasoueidan.com

I'm shocked. This doesn't make sense. I'm so sorry, Adam. Google has lost one of their *best* CSS advocates. It's ridiculous. I always checked YOUR work to know what I've missed when I was away! Whoever hires you next is going to be lucky. The community is here for you and got your back.

Jesse Sutherland
@jsutherland.dev

Unbelievable! Wow! I can only hope the replies to this bring you some peace - everyone - all the people on here! (Huge testament to your influence & value btw!) - is in your corner. I'm just another random dev but your stuff and attitude is like the peak of this profession! They suck! You rock!

Brandon Jones
@toji.dev

This is awful. Every coworker I've heard of that was let go is making me more angry. There's no rhyme or reason to it. I'm so sorry!

Razvan Caliman
@razvancaliman.bsky.social

This is so upsetting! I always admired your passion for the web and your prolific demo building. You helped me get excited about the web over and over again. You truly are an inspiration. If this is how Google treats their best, I have no faith in their other promises.

Mike Herchel
@mike.herchel.com

Shit man. Fuckin shit. Things always turn out good though. Keep your chin up. Wonder what this means for the Chrome team as a whole (anyone else get eliminated)??

Oliver Turner
@oliverturner.cloud

Of all those who worked to keep people excited about Chrome, and Google’s stewardship of the web, you were the best to ever do it. I’m so sorry they made such a short-sighted choice xx

Rachel Andrew
@rachelandrew.co.uk

So sad about this. You were doing such brilliant work, and I'm going to miss how positive and lovely you are to work with. I bet there's some great things just round the corner for you, though it feels awful now.

Michaël Vanderheyden
@th3s4mur41.me

Wtf 😳🤯 Don't know what to say other than this is a loss for the web and modern CSS! I have no doubt you'll quickly find your next adventure, but still your time at google definitely deserved a different ending. So sad.

Rob Meyer
@robmeyer.net

Such rubbish. I hope you’re treating yourself kindly and realize that this is just foolish corporate mismanagement. You’ve taught me so much and pushed the platform way ahead. By any measure you’re exceptional.

Ivan Čurić
@ivancuric.npmx.social

Jesus fucking Christ. They have enough money to burn, but hey, let's lay off the people that have nothing but a positive impact. I hope you find a job that isn't led by billionaire assholes.

Bill Criswell
@crswll.dev

Nothing makes sense anymore. So many people just being let go everywhere for seemingly no reason especially at these huge companies. I hate it. I'm sure you'll find something and it'll be awesome.

Stephanie Rewis
@stefsull.bsky.social

WTAF Adam… I’m so sorry. Having left a big company for retirement, I can assure you that they suck (and you don’t)… I know this is soul crushing, but take some time to process, then release. You’re going to land on your feet. You’re too good & you know so many folks. They’ve got you… 💜

Jan
@handle.invalid

Hate to hear this. I hope you're staying strong and looking for better opportunities at a company that cares about its people.

Debbie O’Brien
@debbie.codes

So sorry you have to experience this. Truly unfair and cannot begin to comprehend. Sending you all the virtual hugs in the world. You are a rockstar, a legend. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise

314rate
@314rate.space

I am really sorry to hear this. Since the beginning of my career I’ve always been looking up to you. And still (will) do. This sucks.

Jeremy Kelaher
@kelaher.bsky.social

Shit mate. I do not know you, but I know Weston Rutter. No words. The last one of these I had at least I guessed it was coming. It takes while to get over it, I found advisory and community work really helped. Take care of your self.

Herr Siering
@herrsiering.de

This makes no sense at all… hope you're back up on your feet soon! With your skills, I'm 💯% sure you'll find an awesome place to work, any company would be lucky to have you!

Munawwar Firoz
@munawwar.bsky.social

I hate how companies fire people.. they just kick them out of the building immediately. It adds to the pain so much more. I kind of understand why they do it (because some people get super sour and toxic on their notice period), but I wish they did it on a case by case basis.

Philipp Nowinski
@pno.dev

Man, I'm so sorry, that sucks. It's quite ridiculous, really. The work you did was incredible. I always had high appreciation for your super positive attitude and the enthusiasm you spread. Google used to be killing it at DevRel stuff. Sad to see that they don't care anymore.

Zouhir
@zouhir.bsky.social

Adam, I’m so sorry… You’re incredibly talented and I personally learned a ton from you. None of this makes any sense. I hope we stay in touch, and work together again in the future. Thank you for the great time, passion and helping make our scrolling, carousels & countless other things better ❤️

Atul
@atulnet.bsky.social

Hey buddy, none of this is your fault. At all. So pls don’t think it that way. Businesses do what they do for the worst of reasons So sorry you are going thru this. I’ve been there… trust me, it feels awful. Take some time off / away. Think thru the larger things in your life. You’ll be OK

afreesex.bsky.social
@afreesex.bsky.social

I've been following and learning from many of the things you put out there since a while. Felt always inspired, enlightened with your work and teaching and infected with your positivity. It's enraging to wake up to the crude reality of huge corporations just using and spiting out people. Fuck em.

Marina Aísa
@marinaaisa.com

I just read this. I'm deeply sorry, Adam. It makes no sense to me, you have been such an important part of Google's web team visibility and communication :(

Kristian Muñiz
@krismuniz.com

Absurd decision making, disconnected from reality. I've followed you for years and know that Google was extremely lucky to have you, any company would be (perhaps your own?). Regardless of what you do next, I'm sure that as a community we'll continue to follow your work. Please take care!

Ankur Oberoi
@aoberoi.me

Thanks for sharing your raw, honest, emotional ride. As someone who also dealt with being let go at Google, this immensely helps me feel seen. Not alone. I'm sure it helps anyone else in a similar situation, so so much. 💛

Emily Painter
@paintingemily.bsky.social

Also, if there's anything I can do to help, even if just lifting spirits, bullshitting, getting out of the house in these crazy times, please let me know. I am pissed on your behalf if this situation has you feeling less than in any way, they didn't deserve you.

Emily Painter
@paintingemily.bsky.social

Damn, I'm sorry Adam. I hope you do know, evident by how many people responded, that you are amazing, smart, your passion for code is evident to anyone who gets the privilege to know you. I know I would not be the dev I am, if one at all, if not for the fortune of being your student many years ago.

Dad McDadderson
@will-meh.bsky.social

Sorry. It sucks. I’m old enough to remember when there were more than five companies. It was a jungle, but it meant there were tons of niches. Little shops - including a little company called Google taking on Alta Vista - allowed a rich set of opportunities. We could have that again. Empower Labor.

Sam
@samthor.au

You will land on your feet. 🏃 I wasn't laid off, but I have bitter feelings about the end of Googs for me too, let me know if you want to chat.

Radu
@radumicu.dev

Fucking hell Adam, I learnt so much from you just by looking up to your work. :( really sorry about this. BTW it's ok to be pissed because yeah feels like we are numbers most of the time not humans. All the best...

Neil
@rctneil.co.uk

I'm so terribly sorry to hear this. Your work on the Chrome team has helped me tremendously. Your guides in the CSS world have been incredibly helpful. I have no doubt another, new, better opportunity will arise for you and I do very much look forward to following your journey. Take care Adam.

Andy Bell
@bell.bz

Oh mate this is horrendous news. You’re so bloody good at what you do. Thanks for being my main cheerleader during Learn CSS too. I bloody needed it and you were there, every time to pick me back up. I’ll never forget that 💛

Jonathan Yee
@jonathanyee.bsky.social

for a company that's investing in making the web awesome, this is bad strategy. I hope you don't lose your passion and someone will hire you to continue your great work. wizbug still the bees knees

Philip Jägenstedt
@foolip.org

So sorry to hear today that you were gone, just like that. Nothing I can say will make it better, but I still want to say you are an amazing person, you are rad.

henry ✷
@strange.website

sorry this happened to you mate <3 i got ex-googled a ways back, they don't handle these with nearly enough integrity or grace. godspeed in the next season.

Bruno
@brunoby.design

I cannot believe this. This is a mind-numbingly stupid move from Google taking into account their aspirations. Hope you find a new home soon that will allow you to continue to shape the future of the web. Don't stop delighting us with your amazing work. And above all, continue be awesome!
