Why am I getting newspapers from Reform UK in my letterbox? Can they go away please. I hate them so much. I actually get a wave of anger inside whenever they show up in my life. 😭

Loving the wave of "Trying Ocarina of Time for the first time" videos coming into my recommended on YouTube lately! Its cool to see people enlightened by one of gaming's masterpieces.

The new Tesla Roadster is probably the most stupid product I have seen in a long time. Would be cool if it was engineering project for a competition but it's actually being marketed for sale, and I reckon you won't be getting your deposit back when it doesn't arrive without great friction.

I thought I could hear it well enough and it was OK. Yeah, was a bit painful it still being 95% noise but I thought whatever pain is the beginner's journey. Then subs come in and makes me hear things I thought I never could. Seeing the text is game changing. Still hard to comprehend. 🤣

Has everyone's boilers broken down at the same time as mine as well everywhere it swamped! I can't find a booking for an engineer to come over. This is poopy big time. 😂🥶

OK it makes sense thinking about it. Most of the country turned their heating on for the first time recently. 😂

I don't really care too much about the Dream drama, I just find it odd that he's so insistent on coming up with excuses for everything he's been exposed for doing. 😂 Can't he just say sorry guys, it's the 4th time now, I'll own up??

I think next year I will take the JLPT N5. I think even though I only do this for a hobby, having something to show for it would be cool. If things keep going, I want to do up to N3. And it gets me out the house to do something interesting and probably somewhat stressful I guess. 😂

Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

I can't get enough of the Ikea KAJPLATS smart bulbs. They have great CRI, work great with Homeassistant and are great value as well.

When you shake a can and open it it fizzes more not because pressure increased but because you've mixed the CO2 in creating lots of mini suspended bubbles. These act as thousands of nucleation sites, like a mento mint but gas. The trick isn't to tap or do anything fancy, just let the bubbles go.

The tapping thing is pretty much placebo. It doesn't really help. Maybe some bubbles that have attached to the can's inner walls will float to the top and go but the real problem is all those suspended bubbles.

I used to live and die by functional code in TypeScript. I'd avoid mutating a let like the plague, would use maps and filters for everything. But I have really started to like the simplicity of loops and imperative code. 😅 It reads so well. It feels human.

I like to contain the imperative code with functions. So state doesn't leak. Functions are small, start with a bit of state, then return a value. I think what I find works is I make the building blocks of my app more imperative, then composing those imperative pieces in a more declarative way.

I think the biggest reason why I have grown to go back to more imperative-like code is because TS I feel fights me more on the functional side compared to other languages. Maybe if they added some extra functional utilities/syntax I might sway my opinion again??

I feel like furigana is a liability for my long-term success so I am going to rip it out of my Japanese studies where possible. I know it's handy but in the back of my mind the thought of one day turning it off, and my reading plummets, puts me off it.

That's me not throwing shade at Bunpro - Bunpro is excellent! It lets me disable things I don't like which is perfect. And if someone finds the things I disable useful then that's also fine!

Actually, thankfully I was only 30 or so points into grammar on Bunpro and with hindsight their default hint levels were way too generous for me so I have reset my progress and will start N5 again. Now I have it strict I can use Japanese more to learn Japanese.

Also in my grammar studies (thankfully, I am new to it so it won't ruin my SRS too much) I am disabling furigana there and also the nuance hints (e.g. it tells me I need an object marker there). Well great, that's most of the learning taken away.

Bunpro pretty much tells me the answer and I didn't even read the sentence. I can't see how this is helpful at all to be honest.

A few times now I hum some Japanese tunes I play on Osu! and now I'm a few months in, I hum a song and replay gibberish in my head but sometimes I realise there's a word I know in that song and then I get a mini "no way" moment. 🤣

Bare in mind these tunes I knew before studying Japanese! Its a raw memory of the song back before I didnt know Japanese. Replayed in my mind today. Its actually pretty cool when it happens.

YouTube refuses to load on my phone with GrapheneOS when I don't have the Google Play Store (even though Google Play Services is separate). So I just installed the Google Play Store and then... just denied it network access. Which works.

The word "often" is intentional! Because you genuinely can get smart things - it just requires research, technical skills and effort.

A streak of just 2-3 days of bad study nights with Japanese is really discouraging. Anyone learning, make the process rewarding enough for it to feel motivating but not too easy to barely learn. I find when I tune my study and lift some weights that spark comes back!

Physical weights count too I guess. Scientifically it checks out. But I did mean the burden of study as being heavy. 🤣 Should have clarified.

I did have a look into Plasma Bigscreen! It looked very cool. I was tempted to just use a Logitech K400 as a "TV remote" with a CEC adapter to make my keyboard control TV volume.

I'm thinking of getting a new TV, but, wow. Modern smart TVs are a privacy joke. I think I'm going to meet in a pragmatic middle: buy a new TV, keep it PERMANENTLY off the network, and then use an Apple TV box.

Last step: hardware. 😭 I was looking at Intel N150 mini PCs, but the price is outrageous. N150 would have been great because it has hardware deciding support for all the latest video codecs like VP9 and AV1.

If the cost of buying a mini PC wasn't so much, I'd have considered this as my next TV experience. It would have been so versatile and powerful and I think quite seamless. But alas, the market shot me down. :(

I thought, the trackpad + keyboard combo would actually be a pretty nice experience controlling a TV. So I was going to try it! Plasma Bigscreen is OSS, by KDE. I was going to use Nix, which would give me the latest software and kernel. Vacuumtube for YT. Sponsor block too. Seemed cool.

I felt more comfortable learning grammar when I translated word-for-word, literally, a Japanese sentence into English. Translation tools take semantics, context, and meaning and then re-formulate into English and this can make the grammatical differences unclear for newbies like me.
