Jono: "That's the open source mindset. You decide what to work on. You decide when. Nobody is keeping score, nobody is checking in, nobody is assigning you work. The only thing driving you is wanting to make the project better." People do things because they care. 🤍

Another hit of @npmx.dev. Wrote down my thoughts contributing to npmx over the past month. The future of open source is bright. jonathanyeong.com/writing/npmx...

To celebrate the launch of the @npmx.dev alpha, I wrote up a guide on how to make your first contribution to an open-source project. Let me know if this helps you make your first contribution (and it doesn't have to be code)!

code and tests aren't the moat. they never were. no need for agents to copy a project. forking was always an option. the moat of an oss project is its community, its governance, and its ecosystem connections. agents will never be able to replicate that. don't hide. let's build in the open, together

🙋‍♂️ I _could not be more thrilled_ this isn't a zero-sum game we're here to make the web better for everyone, and this is a win 🔥 props to @npmjs.bsky.social 🙏

Well, well, well... look who suddenly remembered they can ship new features. Right after the community started working on an alternative. What a coincidence! 🙃

Not something I knew I needed. But excited nonetheless!

Anything you can do in Obsidian you can do from the command line. Obsidian CLI is now available in 1.12 (early access).

A reminder of one of the loveliest pairs of siblings in the dictionary: ‘muscle’ and ‘mouse’. To the Roman imagination, the flexed biceps of a (typically naked) athlete resembled a rodent scuttling under the skin. ‘Musculus’, in Latin, means ‘little mouse’.

I’ve always been on the fringes of open source but after being thrust into the @npmx.dev community exactly one week ago, I can firmly conclude that this is the stuff that has always powered The Internet and it must continue at all costs.

Thought I'd talk a bit about npmx likes and how they work. - They are on atproto - The source of truth is from constellation 🌌. We get the total distinct did count, and if you have liked it - Likes are cached server side for 5 mins. - Uses the package url as the key to the record.

Wanna come work with me? ngrok are shortly going to be posting a position for someone to take ownership of our video content, focusing on well-researched, well-presented AI educational stuff (a la ngrok.com/blog/prompt-...). If that sounds like your cup of tea, my DMs are open 🙏

The community has really rallied around @npmx.dev. I happened to have built outputs from _long ago_ when I first pulled the repo 4 days ago. The difference is subtle but also hiding massive improvements and efforts by all involved.

You don’t need to write code to contribute to an open source project! Reviewing and testing is hugely important and always needed

Check out @npmx.dev, “A fast, modern browser for the npm registry for power users” - @baileytownsend.dev @zeu.dev and other atproto devs are helping out in seeing what social features can be added to bring it into the Atmosphere

If you’re curious how they nerd sniped me into joining npmx to help, it was this. Lots of interesting questions of how can you integrate atproto beyond things like bluesky comments on a website if the application is not inherently atproto? Hoping we can find some good answers to these questions.

adding social features to our websites will accelerate atproto adoption faster than building pure atproto apps

The community is a thing of beauty. As I said a few hours ago in the chat, I'm always in awe at the caliber of the folks around us, so much to learn from everybody, a really humbling experience ❤️

when you collaborate in open source teams, you need to unlearn a lot of what your company work taught you

Will people have time maintaining forks of multiple open source projects? Just imagining the security burden makes me shudder. We can't slap AI on there and assume that we're done. Even if it reduces the effort. It's still more effort than having someone else maintain the project.

Gergely Orosz@gergely.pragmaticengineer.com

The many people who will be unhappy about their AI-instructed PR not merged will also learn rapidly that open source is very much “remixable” with AI support: Fork the code, make the change: it’s now yours! Open source might just explode with remixes honestly…

alright folks i need help convincing someone who knows nothing of decentralised social networks that #ATproto is the future we want. What’s your pitch?
