Just discovered that at the start of October my solar batteries switched to "full backup" mode in response to a heat wave and then just... never switched back? So I've been paying PG&E to send me power every night while 15kWh was strapped to the side of my house just chillin. 😭

Me: "Yeah, things are mostly looking good, but I never figured out why the compositor just drops a frame once in a while?" Coworker: "Is it because of this line in your demo that says drop every 200th frame?" Me: "THE. F#@&ING. WHAT???"

This has apparently been in my metaballs demo from the very first commit. It has been there for 5 years. I have no recollection of ever adding it. I have spent HOURS debugging lower level systems because of it. AI can just take my job now. I'll be busy walking slowly into the sea.

English language "features" that just need to go away: having to ask my kids if their teacher is married or not (which they don't know or care about) before I can write a formal message to them. Unless the teacher is a guy, because then who cares, right? 🙄

Finished all the episodes of Silo so far. Been a while since I read the books, but I can tell it's a pretty loose adaptation that reeaalllyyy stretches things out. Still, it's enjoyable to see the world of the books brought to life! (Juliette's amnesia was stupid, though.)

I did LOL pretty hard at a character admitting that The Pact was AI written with some light editing.

AI-filed bug: If the error is present then the PoC program will output "cycle=0x8B01, phase=false" to the console in the middle of 500 lines of gibberish. Dev: And if the bug is fixed? Bug report: It will lock up your machine, looping endlessly to provoke the error. Dev: Awesome, thanks for that.

Maybe I'm the weird one. When I write a PoC the entire screen turns red with a flashing message saying "THE BUG HAPPENED" when the bug happened, and the entire screen turns blue and plays Final Fantasy battle victory music when the bug is fixed. 🤷

I've seen multiple posts recently that jump scared me because at a glance "LLVM" and "LLM" are easy to confuse.

Beat "Well Dweller". It's a nice little Metroidvania that leans into creepy fairytale vibes. Short, took me a little over 9hrs, but that made it perfect for the pair of cross-country flights I took this week. store.steampowered.com/app/3699590/...

store.steampowered.comWell Dweller on SteamWell Dweller is a dark fairy-tale metroidvania, full of charming characters living in a wretched kingdom. Play as Glimmer - a tiny bird armed with a matchstick - who must burn the wicked queen to save...

Worth calling out that the unique movement mechanics. For example: There's no double jump. Instead you get an ability early on that turns your weapon into a springboard when you stick it in the wall. It makes navigating the levels a bit more puzzle-y.

2026 California ballot measures are like: 1) Tax billionaires? 2) Ban ballot measures that tax billionaires? But maybe also you poors, I guess. 3) You sure that a tax on Californians with, um, *generous* incomes, is what you want? 4) Can we at least make it harder to tax billionaires in the future?

The agenda for the Nov 5th WebGPU Paris Meetup is live! We'll have many exciting talks covering rendering, AI, native WebGPU on mobile devices and more. I'll also give updates on the spec and browser highlights. Check out the detailed schedule and register here! rsvp.withgoogle.com/events/webgp...

rsvp.withgoogle.comWebGPU meetupStandardization can often feel opaque from the outside, so we are organizing this informal, community-driven gathering right after the official GPU for the Web Working Group event.

Is there any way to read this ad that ISN'T ominously dystopian? Right down to the company name... 🪳

My son has never seen Avengers: Infinity War. He's currently at a theater watching Endgame with a friend. Kid must be so confused right now. 😂

Ah, and that would be why there was no mention of the Meta VR glasses FoV yesterday. (From the Tested hands on)

Was invited to Meta Connect today. Eye rolled my way through all the AI talk to here about the VR "glasses". Hardware looks very nice! Laughed when Mark practically mumbled the $1300 price tag. No talk of FOV either, which make me suspicious.

Not interested in an OS that revolves around the AI yeti. Wish I could get this hardware with Steam Deck software. That would be perfect!

A cautionary tale: My streaming service shuffled an EDM song into my queue a little while back that I kinda liked so I favorites it and listened several times over the next week. Had a generic anime girl as the album art, but that's not too unusual in that space so whatever.

So, yeah. Unfortunately I got tricked into giving an obvious AI content farm a few dozen listens, and NOW my recommendations are endless fields of non-distinct EDM songs from a variety of fake artists with AI generated anime girls on the cover. And I don't know how to dig myself out of this hole.

After that The Algorithm got real excited and was like "You like this artist? I'm gonna play more stuff by them!" And it played a LOT more. And it all sounded suspiciously similar. Turns out this "artist" puts out hundreds of singles a year. Every one with generic anime girl art.

Since the question came up on Mastodon I'll answer here too: The Steam Frame won't have WebXR support in Chromium at launch. The Chrome team hasn't had access to the hardware or headcount available to work on it.

Oh! It's apparently Steam Frame day! $1059 is unfortunately steep but also not unexpected given RAMpocolypse.

I’ve been testing the Steam Frame for a bit more than a week, and I’m quite impressed with it. We did a short hands on report for the embargo this morning but will have more, including a chat with @nchan.bsky.social on next week’s show.

Doodling with my kid. He brought home a book about drawing "cute food" (which all seemed to involve animals curling up on/in said food), so have some mouse boba.

Two years later, this probably possessed sign near me has been replaced. I don't know if it's an improvement, though.

Brandon Jones@toji.dev

Not sure how this sign was damaged (sun exposure?) but it gives strong "we'll get that stubborn spot out in exchange for your eternal soul" vibes.

A distressing amount of my (and my coworkers) time lately has been spent on "No reasonable program would ever actually try to do this, and in fact Vulkan and Friends forbid it, BUT the GL spec technically allows it AND it blows up real good on driver XYZ, so it's a WebGL problem now."

"Insomniac's Spider-Man games were great! I loved swinging through the city, helping random people, taking down bad guys with webs from the ceiling, and using all Spidey's gadgets!" "Excellent! What if we told you Insomniac made ANOTHER superhero game that had exactly none of that?"

Jacob Geller@jacobgeller.com

Wolverine embargo is up and I think it is...not good at all! The game attempts very little and succeeds at even less. Relentlessly uninteresting combat, largely shallow characters, stale level design. A fascinating example of AAA polish on a hollow shell of an idea.

I have no interest in folding phones, regardless of which company makes them, but I gotta admit that the frosted glass transition Apple does when you open or close the phone is real slick. Give the engineer who wrote that shader a cookie.

Yeah, sure, there's an Apple Keynote, but let's be honest: we're all just waiting for JerryRigEverything to get his hands on the new foldy thing, right?

"Dear, why is that child staring at us?" "Shh! That's a Main Character! Ignore it and maybe it'll go away." "How do you know?" "Just look at him! Kid's hat has more texture resolution than the two of us combined! His shield has more polys than half the townsfolk. He. Has. Actual. HAIR!"

I've had this mouse for 21 years, pulling it out of my parts drawer whenever I needed a wired device, and tonight it finally gave out. Pressing [F] to pay respects. 🫡

I’ve alway’s thought it’s a shame that WebAssembly has the word “web” in it. Gives it a connotation that it’s “only for browsers” or something.

Meanwhile, NASA’s over here with a flight-compliant derivative (SpaceWASM) intended for spacecraft!

After a bunch of work on invisible code architecture, my current personal WebGPU project has finally hit the point where I get to mess with the fun graphical techniques. :)
