If it's faster for people to use a magic chatbot to find an answer that lives on your site, it's because your IA sucks.

If it's faster for people to use a magic chatbot than do a task on your site, it's because your UX sucks.

If you're offering "AI" as a feature on your site, that's not innovation, that's a clear sign you took a shortcut. You skipped the hard work of figuring it out and are leaving it to the user.

Precious little sleeping spiders πŸ–€

πŸ•·οΈπŸ’€ New paper in time for πŸŽƒ! Do #spiders really sleep? In our new study on #Portia fimbriata we tested all behavioural criteria of #sleep and found evidence for regulated, two-stage sleep with recurring REM-like stages. Two stories about mink farming in my feed today and I'm just stuck thinking about how "farm" is such an inapt word for these places (at least without the qualifying "factory" lead-in). They live in shoebox cages on racks, eat meat mush off the ceiling wire and poop through the floor wire.

Missing out on #a11yTOConf once again. Hope everyone has a great time, and that any travellers are enjoying the magically perfect fall weather in town. πŸ‚

Legit. I'm too weak and wimpy (and sweaty! πŸ˜…) to be much of a cyclist, least of all on major roads, but I am all for our bike lanes and cyclist protection & infrastructure.

This account is a Toronto Cyclist Admiration zone until further notice. You people are inspiring.

The framing: "OMG, AI so smart now, it can detect CANCER leading to DEATH" The actual, buried takeaway: "Hippocrates could, too, by _looking_ at people"

Wrong answer, but true: My first website. Handcrafted HTML painstakingly written into a plain textarea on Angelfire. It featured a dark, starry background; the Foo Fighters lyric "a brand new sky to hang the stars upon tonight"; and I don't even recall what else.

Okay, suddenly I'm obsessed with how squirrels roll their little mitts into their chest when they sit up. 😍

No, that can't be right. I just checked and Times Like These only dates back to 2002... πŸ€” So I guess my pet portraits promo site came first. Hustlin'.

[These were both after my "true" start: the "human rights website" assignment at school that Adam and I managed to make completely Simpsons-themed -- and aced, I believe.]

πŸ“žMe: Hi, my name is sylvia. I have an appointment on Wednesday that I need to reschedule. πŸ“žThem: Okay, do you want to do that now, or give us a call back? GenZ, what is wrong with you?

HOOooOWWwww did I not post "Guess what? Chicken butt!"

Why carve a pumpkin in the fall when you can carve horse hair (one of my favourite creative media πŸ˜‚)! Big Fuzz got a chonky hen this time. Happy #boktober, I guess!

Wild to think they sat for *yeeears* crammed into their little kiddie pools at Marineland, and now that they've all finally been "rescued"... well.

Or when all the names in the table are "John Smith" and I start schooling them on the 4-name Latinx format

Also removed a tick from my horse this week, and confirmed that neither of my two missing tick keys were at the barn. Just flushed another half dozen out of Billie's head and neck fur after a hike, and my tick comb wasn't in the car!? Anyway, I'm in the PetSmart parking lot.

sylvia@svillegas.com

I just removed a tick from the top of my pup's noggin and now I have all of the heebies and most of the jeebies. *shudder*

Honestly, I don't know why so many spiders as Halloween decor. Ticks are the scary arachnids.

Apparently now we are getting daily emails with our Copilot usage and associates costs. 😐

Thissss. Every time someone ends their rant about what other people should do with "*scoff* It's not that hard!", they're missing two key words: "for me"

Erika Hall@erikahall.bsky.social

Anytime you hear someone say "It's hard for me/them to do [x]". Read a book/vote/ride transit/cook a meal whatever… And your first thought is "Well, it's easy for *me* to do it." Keep your mouth shut until you have a second thought.

It's this girl's Gotcha Day! She's been my best friend for 4 years today! πŸ§‘πŸ’›

Feeling more and more annoyed by talk about "generative UI" and "on-the-fly personalization". Some folks might be amazed/amused with it to start, but that will soon wear off. Seriously, no one wants this long-term.

Ok, but I'm still _swooning_ over how perfectly she sat, pressing her chin into my supporting hand to steady herself and stay stock still, even as I tugged that little sucker gently away, like she knew exactly what to do.

I wanted to send my mom a book recommendation, and instead of sending an Amazon link, I sent a link to the book in the public library catalog. Somehow, that felt so revolutionary, and is my new default share mode for books. πŸ“š

A whole crew resting and feeding in this pool. I was surprised by all their colorations, and quite liked this black one with white patches.

Constantly oscillating between wanting to scream "MAKE IT MAKE SENSE" and scheduling a lobotomy.

Gotta confess: kinda loved that moment when deviating from the reference photo & reassured myself that that was, in fact, _fine_, bc I was only intending to draw *A* tardigrade, not *THIS* tardigrade, & this was not actually a paid commissioned portrait of anyone's dear, sweet Sir Chubbington.

Went back for day 3: "miniature" Yes, I know it's not actually a miniature bear, but... kinda? 😁 Enjoyed the support of a black ballpoint pen on this one. #inktober2026 #SciArt #tardigrade

Just opened a deck with "2030 Strategy" in the title and thought "Geez, 2030, all the way in the f-- uhh, three years and a bit."
