I figure since there's been a recent influx of people here on Bluesky, it might be worthwhile to do "highlights reels" of sorts for my newsletter, which is at www.baldurbjarnason.com
The biggest topic on my newsletter is software and web development, usually from a bit of a systemic perspective.
Listening to a report about Google chopping down a quarter of a million trees in Finland to build a data centre while washing out yoghurt pots for the recycling
I love being reminded that the audience really doesn’t give a shit about the developers. Like, forget that one of the most influential studios in our industry was just executed by its publisher, just make sure the product continues on the assembly lines!
After hearing news of BioWare's closure on Wednesday, over 75,000 Mass Effect fans have signed a petition demanding that EA put another studio in charge of the franchise or license out the IP. https://bit.ly/4siIubW
Genuinely impressive how in a fairly short period of time, the Windows install I have on my dual-boot desktop for the occasional testing and graphics work has become much buggier, less usable, and less reliable than Desktop Gnome, which hasn't improved one iota in about a decade.
And I'm not one of those "desktop Linux is great actually" types. It's reached a point where it's tolerable
but I had to spend an hour after a recent update "helping" Windows find a display it's been finding perfectly well for several years. 🙄
“Don't think | deadSimpleTech”

> The end result is that we live in a world that's deeply hostile to people who insist on thinking while demanding that they pretend to think.
Get ready for all your Microsoft products to get even worse.
We need to find ways to move off of all billionaire-owned internet services and software. A practical consumer issue as well as a critical political necessity.
My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.
When I see somebody post on how useful they find generative "AI", an angry, defensive post is sure to follow like clockwork
Any circulation of a pro-"AI" post on a site with artists, writers, illustrators or the like, will reach the ears of somebody whose life has been severely hurt by the tech
Go to a factory pub and talk about how much you made from shutting the local factory down, you're going to get punched in the teeth. The witnesses will all think you deserved it
Brag about "AI" near people who know illustrators, translators or copywriters and you'll get the social media equivalent
I’m uploading the Ugly Reykjavik videos to YouTube. I try to take short videos when I remember, mostly for myself to remember the sights and sounds.
I will now be dumping them on YouTube for those interested in ugly little videos from Iceland 😄
The first one is last week's abandoned farmhouse.
Stumbling upon this abandoned farm was definitely a happy accident.

Dialling down the noise (or, bookmarks post schedule change)

Shifting the schedule of the suggested reading posts for paid members to once a week. Same number of links, just less of a noisy schedule.
I've basically all but talked myself into the idea that I should rename the podcast/newsletter to more accurately reflect the theme I've shifted to lately
"Out of the 'AI' Crisis"
Bad idea? Yes? No? Maybe?

Looking into Patreon community tools and not finding much that looks great, to be honest.
Do any of you have suggestions for community/discussion tools with direct Patreon integration?
The ones I can find are Discourse and Discord and neither seems ideal
Also I don't use either of them so setting one or the other up would involve a learning curve (also Discourse hosting seems quiet expensive).
I don't use any chat apps to speak of myself, except for with close friends and family, so I'm a bit anxious about being able to manage one for a Patreon
Omg no, he was so young. Damn. He was such a talented voice actor. It’s on the mind because I literally just watched it yesterday, but he got asked to do the taken monologue as porky pig and its a masterpiece
Something I try to illustrate with these annoying threads is that design is not business, but business is a constraint on design.
The responses "it can be an advantage to be faster" are not unexpected. It's the implication that they are *part of* design that is incorrect.
and in terms of comparing to sex ed, please do not...
> How we talk about generative AI refusal matters. I think it’s wrong to compare generative AI refusal to an authoritarian, anti-science, anti-LGBTQ+, sexist framework for teaching young people about sex.
I am really interested to know why before this final round it felt / was reported like a given that Bolsonaro would win? Just one of those quirks of polling that can never really reflect reality?
Victory for Lula, who has already reduced Amazon deforestation by 70% since 2022, means there is now a chance of ending deforestation of the rainforest entirely
I’m weeping with joy for Brazil, for the Indigenous peoples of the Amazon, and for life on Earth 🇧🇷🌳🌎

Jaron Lanier wrote in like 2018 that AI products are not labour-saving, they’re labour-concealing, and I have been shouting that from the rooftops ever since
Today @dairinstitute.bsky.social is releasing the Luddite Lab Resource Hub. The hub hosts case studies, resources, and political education for unions, labor organizations, and workers who want to fight “AI” and automation at work. labor.dair-institute.org
