You know what? It lasted longer than I thought it would and it was better than it had any right to be. Cheers, Pokemon UNITE. You were (still are, until March) a dope time.

This made me sad for so many reasons, one of them being - and forgive me for sounding reminiscent about my time at the big megacorp - but this does not sound like the EA I worked for so many years ago. This sucks for everybody, and I feel for the folks having to navigate through this mess.

"I don't want to work at this place anymore:" EA workers decry mismanagement and corporate greed after mass layoffs Current and former EA employees paint a bleak picture of daily life at one of the video game industry's most prominent publishers

I don't wade into Reddit drama often (I primarily stick with sports and Star Trek), but the meltdown on r/cyberpunkgame is fascinating. They quietly instituted a rule banning all discussion about Claire. A mod called them out on it. The subreddit banned the mod. The community revolted.

Again, I don't normally wade into Reddit drama because few things are as sad as a volunteer Reddit moderator who is higher than a giraffe's cornhole on their micron of power. But watching this unfold, in real-time, and seeing the community stand up to support trans representation was pretty dope.

I am an NC Dinos fan, as I worked for NCSOFT, but they weren't particularly good this year. So, to choose who I support in the Korean Series I had to look at the teams: the KIA Tigers and Samsung Lions. Tigers? Lions? Both Detroit. I don't own any Samsung stuff. I drive a KIA Optima. Go Tigers.

That would be a stupid fucking direction for the industry to take. Which is why this is probably the case.

I THINK one of the things we're really seeing is a continent, maybe industry-wide shift away from full-time employees and towards gig/codev work. And that transition looks like layoffs across the board even from studios that just had big successes.

We have reached the point where recruiters - RECRUITERS - are on LinkedIn peddling the "this review was bought" nonsense. Have we, as an industry, just decided to completely stop taking the work seriously?

I'm sorry but that Save Mass Effect thing really bums me out I absolutely understand and know what it is to be profoundly impacted by such incredible works. But if BioWare projects meant a lot to you, I implore you to care more about the people who built those worlds than the fate of the IP

Forget Valve. Forget Steam and Half-Life and Dota. The best thing Gabe Newell ever did was not have a social media presence.

This post is unavailable.

I love being reminded that the audience really doesn’t give a shit about the developers. Like, forget that one of the most influential studios in our industry was just executed by its publisher, just make sure the product continues on the assembly lines!

I'm sorry but Mr. Smith's comments really only reinforce my point. While I'm sure that he and many of the others who are wanting this "would welcome opportunities for those developers to participate," it ultimately just feels like it's about making sure there is more stuff to stamp the N7 logo onto.

I appreciate that people want a new Mass Effect, but the future where fans advocate for the work itself and not the people who make it is the one the vultures at EA want. If you'll take it however you get it, they can keep treating people who make what you love as expendable.

just saw this graph and its another Y axis crime. there is only about a 2.5% difference in revenue between the two over a comparable sales window since launch (which is fantastic for a sequel!) but you would never know it with the fuckass Y axis starting at 392.5M instead of 0. They're SO close!

I'm asking this half-facetiously and half-seriously since I don't actually know how this sort of thing works but... isn't a buyout just a voluntary layoff?

Walter Koenig was, by just about all accounts, a kind man who was generous with his time. He was also quite the underappreciated actor - outside of Star Trek, Koenig's run as Alfred Bester on Babylon 5 remains one of the best realized antagonists in all of fiction. Damn.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

I see the same thing with Dragon Age, people calling on EA to give the IP to another studio. A lot of folks keep bringing up Larian. Ignoring the demand that EA pick the pockets and hold an estate sale before the body is cold, it’s such a disrespectful move - to the devs, BioWare, and even Larian.

Like, Larian is a phenomenal studio. Larian is also doing their own thing with Divinity. You want them to put that to the side and spend the tremendous goodwill they’ve built up from Baldur’s Gate 3 on serving *another* leased IP for a third-party publisher? Get out of here. Y’all are being silly.

Should Republicans get away with stealing the midterms (because there is no legitimate path for them to win honestly), I’m not convinced that Trump won’t try to give Alaska to Putin.

When you understand just how poorly Epic has been mismanaged, Tim’s obsession with the cost-saving magic prompt box makes a lot more sense.

Since Looking Glass Studios is on the brain this morning, I just wanna throw out there that, like... if anyone who worked there wanted to maybe leak any playable builds of the Voyager game y'all were workin' on back in the day, like... yeah. That'd be pretty dope.

"This is the bit where the comet hits the earth and the dinosaurs die, but the way is cleared for cooler life forms to evolve." I would say that I'll remember this quote for when Tim eventually finishes burying his own company, but I'd never so flippantly disrespect to the actual devs over there.

TIL my nephew, who is obsessed with video games, told my aunt that he has zero interest in pursuing game development as a career because, and I quote, "I don't wanna use AI." Good on you, kid. But also, like, most of us don't.

That said, I did also tell my mom to tell my aunt to tell my nephew that pursuing a career in game dev, at least right now, is akin to trying to board the Titanic after it had already struck the iceberg. There has never been a better time to make games, nor a worse time to try to make it a career.

It was disappointing to see SWTOR not included, but I'm not surprised. This is not the time nor the place to dive into it, but I remember BWA always being treated as the "black sheep" of the BioWare family. Combine that with SWTOR (and the Austin team) being handed off to Broadsword, and... yeah.

I was young and naive and didn't understand office politics (I still don't understand office politics - like, we make toys, calm down), but I guess there was some resentment there from way back. But, yeah, the lack of SWTOR's mention didn't go unnoticed.

They announced this yesterday but for obvious reasons nobody gave a shit. Well it’s a new day and this is fucking ridiculous.
