I just found another really nice usecase for coding agents. I was missing a feature in the window tiling gnome extension I use. Instead of going through all the docs and issues on github, I just downloaded the source code and asked the agent if the feature exists.

I've read a lot along the lines of "SaaS is gonna get irrelevant bc you can build those apps in a few days yourself with AI now". I don't believe that. Building was never the hard part. Maintaining them is. That's still worth paying a few bucks a month.

That's lit!

Firefox's new design ships September 29. And did you know... The Firefox UI is built with Lit? A web browser built with web components! 🔥

I went from "this shit is horrible and I don't want it anywhere near my codebase" to "shit, this thing produces better code than my hands" in less than a year. Not what I expected. The one question about AI we don't need to answer any more is if it is useful for engineering. Other questions remain.

Wo nimmt der solche Brüller her?

Somehow I am really happy right now that I was never interested in soccer. Feels like a really good time to be not interested in soccer.

Hey folks in Berlin! My band 19minutes is playing at the Punk & Plunder Festival this Saturday! If you're in for punk music, lovely company and making a statement against the far-right, join us for some beer and pogo dancing. This is gonna be awesome 😎

And this is why you can't just replace developers with prompting. You actually have to steer this thing or it will make your product worse eventually.

Fun Fact: when I was still an intern, being a JS-Dev was kinda frowned upon. Because writing JavaScript was not "real programming". There was one other dev at the company who was good at JS. And I kinda picked it up bc I thought it would make me hard to replace. Kinda nuts from today's perspective.

I am always confused when people bring up "but it requires a build system" when arguing against any piece of tech. I mean, yeah, I _kinda_ get it. But man, I am using build steps for so many things in a project, it is kinda hard for me to imagine any kind of serious project not having a build step.

Sehr lesenswerte Argumentation

Nein! Genau das Gegenteil ist der Fall. Pfiffe sind Demokratie. Schweigen wäre Zustimmung. Demokratie ist keine reine Frage der Höflichkeit.🧵/1

I used to be a big defender of Design Systems. I spent years chasing the best way to build them. Never reached a point where I was satisfied. Now that I worked with a few DS inside different corps, it feels like we just offered devs an excuse to overengineer systems that are just bad at everything.

I still think the approach is good. But in practice, it seems like I am just forced to use something that just does an overall really bad job and creates a shitload of friction and products that are mediocre at best. Frustrating.

I love this essay very much!!!!

Shawn "Smith" Peirce@silversmith1.bsky.social

@chrislhayes.bsky.social ICYMI, a piece that reminded me of Twilight Of The Elites, for obvious reasons. "a world with universal basic income is more meritocratic than a world without one" www.scottsantens.com/the-angine-d...

"I'm done and implemented all items discussed in the plan" – "what about feat X? It does not seem to work. Wasn't that part of the plan?" "Yes, that was part of the plan. You can't see X, because it was not implemented yet". Well... cool.

Most AI coding tools feel like a very mediocre junior dev. The kind that is smart enough to understand what you tell them and are able to learn from their mistakes, but get their memory wiped completely every morning.

Back in school, we used to call people who claimed Math worked like this stupid. Which was not cool and really mean. Then again... Maybe it was also accurate in some cases...

I don’t know why this fundamental misunderstanding of numbers riles me so much but it makes me want to fucking scream - it wouldn’t even be a 600% rise you ludicrous dipshit

Observation after developing with AI assistance for a few months: The most valuable place (at least for us so far) is AI inside CI. We recently tried @coderabbitai.bsky.social and in one week, it already caught some major issues I'd have missed. Great for handwritten code _and_ AI slop.

This is exactly why I'd recommend Polypane. Little things like that are what makes it a great tool for development.

Bugs happen when your experience differs from your users. Many servers have default caching rules that devs never realize are there since opening devtools instantly disables them. Yes, forcing you to think about caching is extra friction, and friction is annoying. It also makes your work better.

I might have done a full 180deg on this. But I am now convinced that folks who find TypeScript annoying have either never really tried it on a large codebase, or just don't work on serious js projects. Brought to you from a guy who used to hate static typing with a passion.

I ask the agent to add a field to an entity. It creates a migration and runs it. Next, I run the generate command again and it creates a duplicate of that migration, b/c the agent created it manually and – of course – did it wrong.

I ask the agent about the duplicate migration. It corrects the mistake and tells me that I should not create migrations manually. Because it is a bad idea. Yeah, frack you. Apparently, we've entered the smart-ass era of AI.

I usually don't bother reading release notes. But I love reading the @zen-browser.app notes when they pop up after every new release. I basically live in my browser these days and this one is the best I've used in ages.
