What’s everyone’s physical labour backup career? I’m thinking family photographer. Maybe interior designer? I’m not good at either of those things… yet. But I reckon I could make it work if all white collar jobs melt down into the GPUs.

Oh, photographer if it isn't being replaced by AI - I've done it before. Or... costuming? I've done that, though not totally professionally. Or... farming/gardening? that might be nice. Basic, but nice. Lots of moving parts, too.

I can’t put into words the dopamine highs I get from fixing random stuff around the place. I think I would be very happy as a maintenance guy.

I think if all white collar jobs go to AI we're either in the Culture novels, in which case jobs = whatever, or playing Cyberpunk, in which case BBQing rats or kowtowing to corporate overlords are likely to be the available options. Either way, I don't expect many current occupations to still exist.

code janitor. pushing around an "npm audit" mop and pruning git branches. unfortunately, "go into the trades" doesn't work if everyone is doing it. but the quality of plumbing apps will be amazing when all the sw devs start fixing your pipes.

How will an image generator capture my children’s expressions at this particular moment in time? At this specific age? In their home, surrounded by the objects of their life? Photography is about capturing real, specific moments in time; how people look and feel right now. AI can do none of that.

I’ve seen levels.io’s AI image products and I’m baffled by anyone paying for fake images of themselves, in places they’ve never been, bearing facing expressions they don’t make, augmented to be weirdly sexual when that’s not the vibe. What is the point? To remember moments you never experienced?

With interior design some parts can be AI collab, but it’s still a physical job demanding an understanding of light, texture, space, and, most of all, meeting human needs for a home. What activities does this space enable and encourage, how does storage work, etc. But family photography, not at all

Because people like you and me wants the photos for ourselves and maybe close ones, for the memories and the feels. People that use these AI image products usually have insecurities and just want them for other people’s approval. Of course I’m generalising but I think that’s the gist of it.

We need tons of electrical engineers for the power grid here in the NL and I don’t understand squat about electricity (volts, watts, watt hours, what?!) so that might be interesting to learn!

Interior design is more at risk, but family photography not at all. bsky.app/profile/magg...

well I am getting more and more serious about my pottery, but unfortunately I've been doing it enough to know I don't want to be a production potter. idk. maybe handmade ceramic jewellery, some teaching? or do tech for events, I do enjoy that when I do it

Cups! No GPU based replacement because this industry has already been disrupted a hundred times over. 🤣 🏺 bsky.app/profile/notw...

Weekend throwing is almost enough to get me back to “production” mode. 6 cups with no mess, getting close to being able to do matching sets, and less than an hour from setup to clean up.

Aquaponics farming. The chemistry is interesting - bacteria turn fish waste into natural fertilizer so the fish and plants can balance each other out

I've got a few things I'd like to do, but figuring out how to make money doing them isn't something I like to think about, such as: - teaching Japanese to friends is my current time-sink - many people ask if I'm a pro photographer - I'd like to make a coffee table book of my beer can collection

The struggle between the act of creation and the need to 'make it pay' is a heavy one. A coffee table book of beer cans sounds like a wonderfully honest archive of specific human choices. Sometimes the best things we do are the ones that refuse to be simplified into a transaction.

of course, later down the line I'd like to open a combination craft beer bar and museum in Tokyo or operating a vending machine empire are things my partner and I dream about doing but neither of those have a straight-forward path to make them happen, rather they are just soft-retirement ideas

That’s funny, interior designer is mine too.. though I’m not sure that’s safe from AI (it should be IMO). I think I would start a residential house cleaning business. I’d leverage all my cleaning knowledge, train a team and have a service that’s really easy to book online.

Retirement and living off the savings ;-) But yeah, photography (family/wedding) is probably my choice here. That was actually my first job before software development.

Oh TIL! I did photography before too, but just small gigs throughout high school/uni to make extra cash. I figure it’s pretty un-automateable. But also going to be one of the first markets to saturate since lots of people enjoy it 😅 Gotta find more niche manual labour ideas
