I’ve been quiet here for a while, I am not sure if the app got more popular or not but I wanted to come back and try again. And also sharing some close ups from recent artworks. 🌸🌿✨

i did not really understand the Temperance movement and Prohibition until this recent surge of gambling

Mezentine@mezentine.bsky.social

I think we underestimate the appeal of antigambling politics because every problem gambler is surrounded by 3-10 people who are absolutely sick of their shit.

and, like, it's fucked because there's no strict boundary to what counts as gambling. gacha games, day trading, prediction markets... i mean, all bad but all connected to things which do have a socially useful purpose.

but yeah. previously i would have said, well, some gambling is okay, we should have limits, can't we put things in place so that mostly people don't ruin their lives over it. and now i'm like: nah, ban it. all of it. it's fucked. get rid.

seem to have arranged my life in such a way that it will be necessary for me to take a dozen wooden spoons to my driving test

I'm currently experimenting with CSS and SVG filter effects. This one is based on the "Grainy Gradients" tutorial: css-tricks.com/grainy-gradi... The goal is to get a print-dithering like effect. I also added a few more color splots to make it even more organic. #generative #generativeart #css

i would love to buy a game like Epigraph as a collection of loose leaf paper & one weird artefact. maybe i should make that?

Message From Aliens: haven't played it yet, think it's another physics-nerd one. i *do* enjoy the way that the UI is written in the source language, allowing you to use those conventions to understand more. beyond that: dunno, we'll see!

The Gostak: an IF game predating this recent wave, it is not really a translation game because the point is that the words have no referents. nevertheless, you are understanding a system through a language that is foreign to you. also does the UI thing, but you gotta know IF conventions to get it.

Epigraph: this *is* made of difficulty cliffs, but it feels very honest about that? mostly i love that it's a game for linguistics nerds, not for physics nerds. very satisfying to get more and more out of a small source material, layers on layers. but the screen is too dark. nevertheless: i love it

Just to try and pre-emptively stem the tide, a lot of people here are going to be posting the $66bn "loss" which is almost entirely about convertible notes and not the $1bn operating income which is the first cashflow positive quarter ever

i'm gonna be at Overkill! i'm gonna get to finally see Sickhouse in-person! i'm gonna be running stuff but i still need to figure out session titles & descriptions, now i'm just thinking about emails, anyway, the point is it's gonna be fun & i'm looking forward to seeing people there!

The Overkill 2026 starts in a month, but preparations are already thriving (and have been for a while) at Sickhouse. Today, our front has been decorated with these dreamy new banners. Come by and spot them for yourself! #TheOverkill2026 #Enschede #PlayfulArt

its easy to confuse raytracing, raymarching and raycasting, but its simple to distinguish: raycasting is where you cast a ray out until it hits an object and you render it. raymarching is where you march a ray out until it hits an object and you render it. raytracing is where you trace a ray out unt

thinking about the difference between that shot where there's a witch and she makes a gesture and then dozens of candles all flare to light. and the idea of a witch in a smoky little grubby cottage peering at your face with a rushlight made from pig fat.

i guess this thought is actually about the widescale draining of Britain's wetlands, and about the way that the British connect with our past, or rather fictionalised versions of it that have travelled through American culture.

connected to this, i guess: bsky.app/profile/v21.... (yes *of course* i feel the clock ticking down on me getting involved with historical reenactment)

fwiw i got curious and made pottage last year and it turns out it's pretty good. you don't boil the shit out of it, but keep it on a low simmer for as long as possible. whole wheat or barley grains don't turn to mush but are little chewy soft lumps. might make it for lunch today (if i start now)

multiple times recently someone i've worked with has said to me "wow, you're so good at what you do" and i've asked them if they can help me explain what it is i do and they've responded with "no, sorry, i don't really know how to describe it" so, uh, hire me for that, i guess

(my current attempt is something like: i'm a game designer and a programmer and i'm good at the places where a game interacts with the real world, where the context you play it in is unusual or complex or generally not "with a controller, in front of the TV, in a normal play session in the evening")

but, like, recently i've been doing teaching & curating & little bits of video editing. i got to be a puppeteer recently! and for a different job i've been understanding ESP32 chip variants. i'm VJing this weekend. idk. makes sense from where i'm standing.

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

The mobilization itself was already not something I ever expected to see, but to actually win? Hell, to double the winning margin from the 2022 runoff? Genuinely surreal. Maybe child raping billionaires *don't* have to run the world with a shit-eating grin. Maybe that can stop.

A lot of software teams I talk to are trying to understand themselves and their own activity over time. There is an aliveness to it that I like. There's a questioning of just being handed metrics when you feel Claude could help you learn to wade through data. I see the mess but I just love it anyway

An increasingly concerning trend when teaching at Art and Design universities in europe is that students do not know Steam, do not play games on PC/Mac, and generally see games as a form of recreational drug that some odd people do to kick back after work. They don't know that some of the...

A capital finds a technology to make its labour more productive than that of other capitals. It makes a surplus profit. The technology becomes the new norm across all capitals. Surplus profit disappears. Expanding scale now only way to make bigger profit. Next technology comes along. Rinse & repeat.

don't agree with this but on reflection it's because i think that the self is an illusion and that consciousness is not a meaningful concept. but on the other hand i also don't think an uploading machine is a real possibility in a different and more concrete sense, so.

It's finally settled: Britain's oldest #pub is in Somerset and dates from the late 1300s. (All the old pubs I've been too that have claims to be Britain's oldest are "modern marketing exercises")

You have to laugh at the sheer insanity of Turning Point UK being found to be organising literal contract killings and paid agitation at protests up and down the country and it barely even raises a flicker across the press. If that isn't 'terrorism' on some level I don't really know what is
