Talarico: "I oppose trans athletes playing in girls' sports if it endangers safety or fairness"

Fun Fact: Texas law forbids transgender athletes. This is was tired old anti-trans baiting by Brooke Taylor. Talarico should have called her out on it.

I support him, but these Fox News bigots need to be called out and treated as the bigots they are. Stop treating them as legitimate journalists. They are only bigots.

So you want him to fry his election odds by attacking the journalist? Really? I wish all Dems would take lessons from him. 1. Know the beliefs of the audience. 2. Show them you care about issues they care about. 3. Assure them that the attack issues are not real.

I have no problem with this framing. He addresses that audience belief, says he cares and that if it was an issue he would care. People should be talking about other things Talarico has said, however. I don’t get why this one when there are much more concerning take backs such as medical care.

running against a dude who freed a convicted pedophile why would you ever go on the defensive? it wouldve been nice if TX flipped but i guess he just wanted all the super PAC donations hope the vacation house was worth helping further a genocide

Probably the worst response he could have given even if he was hedging to hold onto the Texans who have incomprehensible politics. YOU HAVE TO LEAD TO CHANGE MINDS. This is cowardice. Just say "there are no women or girls being harmed by trans athletes, next question."

I sympathize with your take. My point is that this is a _political_ reply. The whole point is to _reject the framing_. What he did is basically say '_If it's true_ then sure' and wait for a response. This is a standard rhetorical means of forcing the other side to do more than cast aspersions.

Y’all out here forgetting he is running in Texas. Don’t do a Beto. Beto lost to the least fav Ted Cruz because he wanted to take away their guns. It sucks, but the voters of Texas believe trans athletes are a threat.

Rich kids go to schools with state of the art facilities and top tier coaches. They have access to great nutrition and don't have to get after school jobs or babysit to supplement the family income. They have comprehensive health care. I could keep going....

Well, when I was a kid and my dad worked the night shift and my mom worked 3 jobs just to keep us fed and the lights on, my brothers and myself were told we couldn't go out for sports, band, scouts, etc because our parents couldn't even afford the uniforms. I would call that a disadvantage

I’m in NC. We haven’t won a senate seat since 2008. Cooper has not taken this stance and vetoed a ban on trans women and girls playing in sports (the republican supermajority here overrode him). You 100% do not need to take this stance to win in a tough state.

Isn't this the position of basically everyone before the trans freakout? The safety and fairness bit is why most sports required a period of time on HRT, hormone level limits, etc. The phrasing, if deliberate, implies that he believes they can participate w/o endangering safety or fairness.

My take on his statement is he’s trying his damndest to thread the needle with that “IF.” I wish he would stand ten toes down on trans rights but the conditional gives an illusion of centrism on the issue (which I think will play well with Texas voters).

He stands as a candidate in a red state and needs to not be super firm on this. Don't lose the election by getting him to say he supports it 100% when it's not really an issue anyway. People's lives literally can depend on this race.

no. no. absolutely not. we're going to teach these politicians that you cannot betray your constituents to win elections. we cannot reward this behavior. we are required to punish it. if you are concerned about his electoral prospects call his office to tell him what a misstep he has made

One of the main reasons democrats keep losing is BECAUSE they refuse to be firm on issues. People see democrats as noncommittal and two faced because they keep dancing around the topics and leaving their constituents in the dust. Every time an up and comer makes a firm stance, their support rockets

It's honest. There are rules that trans athletes have to follow which subject them to drug testing verification. Sometimes athletes cheat. Trans athletes are so rare in sports that I doubt they'd risk their ability to play by cheating.

Don’t need him to say he 100% supports it. Do need him to stop accepting the fake premise and call it a non issue that it is. “Do you support banning trans surgeries of minor?” Answer”that’s not a think that happens, next question “ make them show 1 case of a reassignment surgery of a minor

Unfortunately to some people here in Texas it is a relevant issue. Parents of girls are being fed a fear diet of how a boy changing to a girl is going to ruin their daughter’s life. It’s ridiculous but in speaking with other mom’s here it is unfortunately a real concern and he has to address it.

When someone shows you what they are, believe them. He's shown the rest of us he'll throw trans people under the bus when he's confronted on the issue. Why would we trust him to stand firm elsewhere?

A voice of reason.....how refreshing. Talarico sounds like a smart guy with a good handle on nearly every issue. While thoughts of Fetterman and Sinema still trigger latent PTSD in me, if he can notch a win in Texas and knock off a creep like Paxton, I say give him a shot.

Not trans people's live apparently. They must be sacrificed amiright? Nah fuck this nose. Shaving off our must vulnerable minorities to feed to bigots is not a winning strategy for "us" its a strategy for you. Just say your comfort and safety is all that matters.

The mistake in this is ACCEPTING RIGHT WING FRAMING on this. The way to answer these right wing questions is to attack the shit out of the framing because it is BS. They don't even have to take a stand, just attack the lies the question is based on and call out the GOP for being creepy and weird.

Do you really think there are voters who are ready to vote for a Democrat, but only if their anti-trans bigotry is catered to? People who have decided that all the other reasons to vote for him are lower priority than keeping trans kids out of sports? Voters for whom this issue is a red line?

I doubt that there are any. There certainly aren't enough to swing an election. And if I'm wrong, and there are a bunch of voters who put their bigotry ahead of everything else, why would we want them in our coalition? Those would be awful people.

Anyone who is bothered enough at the thought of a trans woman playing in women's sports to base their vote on it was never going to vote for the Democrat to begin with. Taking this position gets you exactly 0 new votes.

So you have no info or opinion on safety or fairness re trans women in women’s sports, but you’re positing millions of independents and Dems in TX will vote for a corrupt Trump fraud like Paxton, or not turn out for Talarico re the trans sports issue, while they struggle to pay for gas n groceries.

Yeah, this is the same logic we hear every election and there's absolutely no evidence that it helps Dems in the short term, and it certainly hurts in the long term. People notice the pattern of Democrats getting bullied. That's BAD.

So its also fine for dem politicians to speak out against school integration if it poses risks to children? Im not saying the politicians support segregation, just that they speak out in favor of it.

Here: "If there were safety or fairness issues, I would agree that we should look into that, but the alleged issues that have been raised so far *have* been looked into and have been resolved to the satisfaction of reasonable people. I'm not interested in refuting zombie bigot talking points again."

Anyone who won’t vote for Talarico over any perceived support of trans wouldn’t vote for him because he’s a Democrat. He gains nothing and could potentially lose by agreeing with anti trans talking points.

Bless you You are 💯 right But there is no reasoning with a certain group of people, they rather lose and have it much, much, worse than accepting a bit of political ambiguity by the candidate that would help them the most Same ones that stayed home for Hillary and same that stayed home for Kamala

Believe it or not, throwing people under the bus actually doesn’t accomplish jack shit when your opponent’s voters belong to the “tie them up and lay them on the street then run over them repeatedly with the bus” party. He gains nothing by this and only pisses off people who would support him.

Most voters dont care about the culture war BS against trans people. It's not on their radar. It's not even a huge issue amongst Republicans. Most people consider it a live and let live situation. Throwing trans people under the bus wont win elections even in Texas. Puttng an R after your name might

The problem is that in this scenario either Talarico wins, or you lose bigger. US politics is, unfortunately, a zero sum game. If you sit out a vote - even for a "less shitty" candidate then you're essentially voting for someone that would harm you even more. It sucks and I hate it.

No one who gives a shit against trans people will vote for a Democrat. Understand that. Understand that in the same way you understand gravity. If they’re on the fence having a backbone can sway real people and save trans lives. You are attempting to hoodwink the people who want public executions.

These are the people who cancelled, actually got people fired, for quoting Kirk after his murder. There’s not a logic behind it and entertaining them funnels people into the fucking psycho side. Please, for the love of god understand that.

"People's lives literally can depend on this race." Which is why he should've made them regret asking instead of accepting the bigoted framing. He betrayed the very people who's lives are in the balance, here.

Except he could have helped Kamala Harris win the last election and protect trans lives instead of bigots All the people who want the Democrats to sacrifice trans people could have helped Kamala win but most didn't like her because she wouldn't sacrifice trans people

This post, made by on of his idiot consultants giving him bad advice. Republicans will never vote for a democrat. Democrats lose their elections against the couch. You get people excited to vote for you by being bold. This isnt it.

How do people make such broad sweeping statements like this is mind boggling. It's weird how it actually paints the picture of trans people as weak and diminutive

Fuuuuck. It Talarico wins it will be taken as a signal that it's okay to abandon trans rights. If he loses, it will be taken as a signal that he didn't abandon us hard enough. He could have just said, "it's not a real issue, lets talk about the price of beef."

If you think having very large people on the same court/field/rink as somewhat smaller people poses an undue risk, then make rules about that. My HS girks basketball team had a center who was 6’ and (I guess) 190# and a 5’1” guard who was likely 115# at the most. Both were AFAB. No one saw an issue.

“I oppose being mean to kids and trying to use them as props. I oppose stupid questions during what should be a serious campaign. I oppose thinking that the kids are the problem here.”

In boxing, a trans competitor's fists are more powerful that a cis woman's. In the same example, that is also unfair. Talarico said something entirely reasonable, a pov shared by millions, and millions of people - who are clearly all Nazis.

I'm removing all categories including age but everyone will be hobbled by various devices so they have the comparable strength and dexterity of the weakest 10 year old.

A lot of them could be intersex and would never know as what happened during the Olympics when they started checking also it’s creepy and sexual abuse inducing to check kids if they are trans or not

A perfectly reasonable answer given the open-endedness and slanted framing of the question. There’s a difference between K-12 youth sports (where being trans is virtually irrelevant in terms of fairness or safety) vs., say, elite professional or Olympic sports. But the question didn’t specify.

Merely acknowledging that having undergone male puberty could be a fairness issue in specific instances of elite/professional sports is *not* some slippery slope toward broadly segregating and oppressing trans girls and women. And a perceived lack of nuance on the issue fuels Republican support.

“Could be” is fine. Valid point to discuss, though a lot of cis people might not like the data. The problem is that anti-trans people leap to “is” as a matter of dogma (at all levels). The difference there is a tad on the subtle side though. Dem pols need to handle this much better.

Don't Americans have rules in children's sports? Are there no mixed comps in any sports anywhere? This demonization of trans kids is fucked. Talarico must NOT let himself be wedged.

If you have a thousand girls in a competition, and three trans girls, the three trans girls will be on the podium. Because they are boys. The one thousand girls start the competition knowing they can't win.

None of these people support local government making local decisions. Please tell us what you’ll do when the bigots cry to big government about children playing. That’s what they ask Senatorial candidates these days.

people who think it does are cracked; i'm 5'10" and 300lbs but they'd have 0 problem with me participating in women's sports. if you want to talk fairness, just eliminate gender divisions and institute weight or height classes or something.

People on this thread seem to forget this is Texas. Talarico isn’t taking the bait. The right wingers would more than love to run on culture wars instead of Paxton’s record of corruption. Talarico sees that and worded his response carefully.

I noticed that too. He made it a science argument. The science is clear - trans kids playing sports doesn't impact safety or fairness.

Hey, there are Transgender Texans too. People who live in Texas have Transgender family members who are afraid to visit them in Texas. I expect the people I vote for to take a stand for all targeted minorities, regardless of what state they live in.

Agreed, but they have to win an election first. It's time to take the Republicans approach. Say whatever to get elected, then do what you really want. Obama was opposed to gay marriage in his first term but changed quickly right after winning his second term. Nobody REALLY believed he was against it

“Don’t worry trust me bro, I’ll do it once I’m there don’t worry about anything and you won’t be dead by the time I actually do something” fuck you. And if you fucking say “you have no other choice” or “you can t be angry at normal people” I would kick your ass.

No matter what he says they are going to spend millions on anti trans ads targeting him. This does him no good, people whose brains have been pickled by anti trans garbage are never going to vote for him

No, they won’t vote for him, but he can most certainly pick up some of the independent voters. And he can’t win without getting some of their votes.

Here's the thing, that if is carrying an immense amount of weight. But trans people live every day in fear. Many of us are on the edge with little hope for a future. When politicians say stuff like this its crushing, it happens daily now, and we're hopeless to stop it.

You’re kidding right? Seriously. Please tell me you’re joking. This confirms Texas needs to just leave already if this is how “normal” people are in Texas, because he is looking to represent them and if this is what “wins” that makes them sick and depraved not “scared and ignorant”

He may be the best friend that trans people could have from Texas, but he can't represent them unless and until he wins. Even if he may not necessarily be a progressive champion, at least he would enable Dems to become majority and give powers to other progressive champions in the Senate.

Ugh. That’s pretty much meaningless boilerplate to keep the Facebook moms off his ass but he doesn’t have to weigh in on it at all. Safety and fairness are the concern of sports associations and the federal government has zero reason to get involved except to protect kids from bigotry.

Im in Texas, you have to be careful what you say, now. I think he’s talking to potential voters, though it isn’t the answer I’d like. Hopefully he can answer differently after elected. I really am a Jasmine fan 😞💙

Well, fuck. I thought Talarico was better than this. Next up: Talarico starts to slip in the polls. So he doubles down on the anti-trans stuff, which leads to a further polling decline, and the doom spiral is established.

Dems always forget that there's already a conservative party that leads by dividing. Please, just once before I die, can we get national Democratic candidates who are loudly and proudly progressive? I'd love to see what could be done if voters saw an actual difference between D and R.

So since Texas considers trans people merely being in a restroom to pee to be a safety risk, they will automatically declare trans people existing in sports to be a safety risk. Congrats, identical to Paxton's bigoted policy, in implementation.

Why can't transwomen safely use the men's room that matches their birth sex? Is it because people matching their birth sex are potentially violent? That can't be it because otherwise you'd understand why women don't want men in their bathrooms. So, if it's not fear of male violence, then why?

1. You're replying to a post most of a week old. 2. No matter how you slice your question, no matter the reasoning or rhetoric, you are simply subjecting trans women to the thing you think other people shouldn't be subjected to.

Talarico isn't getting another one of my trans Texan cents now that he has thrown the community, one he openly championed for years, under the bus to try to satisfy people who will never vote for him. You can't transphobe Republicans, stop trying!

Paxton already drove me from my home of 34 years, he's already won. Trans Texans now get to live on a state of near constant fear and increased marginalization while the Democrats nod and clap along. If this were happening to any other minority, y'all would be up in arms!

No they wouldn't. This is the "nothing will fundementally change" Biden crew. This is the "defund the police is going too far" crew. These people will watch you starve to death and go "feeding you isn't realistic, sweetie."

isnt this what talarico's going for? distancing? breaking up the coalition? can't very well run on "we need to put these filthy trannies in their place" if the filthy trannies keep on happily voting for and donating to him, can you? far be it from me to undermine his strategy.

Anti-trans Democrats winning makes Democrats open to more anti-trans policies until they become indistinguishable from eliminationists like Paxton I beg you to look at UK Labour which did what Talarico is doing now. They now have a more anti-trans position than the Conservatives in 2015 w/no benefit

If he had indeed champion trans community why you think that 1 statement is enough to consider him anti-trans. Remember that certain someone said he didn't know anything about project 2025 b4 election, but enacted it after election. Wasn't Obama opposed to same sex marriage in 2008 too?

I think most politicians reflexively accept that people would fundamentally change who they are (or pretend to be someone they aren’t) in order to win, because most politicians do that every damn day.

This is why trans people should never believe in, stump for, canvas, phone bank, donate, or knock on doors for any politician. They are all two faced lying back stabbing bastards that will throw us under the bus every chance they get.

It’s a load bearing if, he’s voted against those sorts of bills in the state legislature, and there’s not a chance a bill like that gets cloture in a Senate he manages to win election to - odds are Schumer is majority leader and it never gets brought for a vote.

There's gotta be a way to put things in context. Let's not let literal fascists burn the world down because they found yet another way to shit on some extremely specific minority. This has no end. If you solve this ??, they will just come up with another which they give absolutely zero shit about.

The biological advantage step that exists between men and women in some sports is dwarfed by the biological advantage cliff that exists between men and professional male athletes in almost every sport

I can’t tell you who to vote for, we all have our principles and I respect that. But to me, the stakes in this election are about as high as they can be so it really is Vote Blue No Matter Who. Talarico is going to be better than that crook Paxton in (almost?) every way.

If we keep voting for bigots, we'll keep electing bigots. We demand more from our leaders. That's how we stop this. Paxton should be in jail but he's not. Why not use that energy to get him prosecuted?

The time for getting better Dems is during the primary. I get this comment was made after the primary, but it’s up to voters (& media, who aren’t pulling their weight) to press candidates on issues during the primaries. Abstaining isn’t the answer when the survival of our democracy is on the line

As a Canadian... I can. And WILL You WILL vote (D). Not voting IS a vote for (R) 1 single GOP rep being elected will be seen as a failure by the US Electorate to recognize the CENTURY of work it will take to restore any trust in you Do Not Fuck This Up

1 single GOP rep being elected is unacceptable. Therefore anything that harms the Democrat opponent's chance of winning is unacceptable. Therefore any statement by the Democrat that divides, alienates, and demoralizes parts of the Democratic base and lowers turnout is UNACCEPTABLE.

You will do as you are FUCKING TOLD! You WILL vote Democrat. You WILL NOT sit at home, because NOT VOTING is the same thing to the rest of the world as choosing (R) do not fuck this up. The world is watching you. 1 SINGLE GOP Rep being elected in Nov will be a disgusting failure to our species and?

IDGAF. I cant. I refuse. You want trans issues to be solved by tomorrow? Make the choice to do Violence... and I will be the one to wade into their cesspool to slaughter them all No? Then you Vote. Then you JOIN the Dem party and MOVE THEM towards Humanity. It IS binary. There is a wrong choice

dont give me this "you arent an ally" bullshit. I would slaughter my way through thousands of innocent lives if it means the Trans Experience is finally recognized for what it is - Part of The Human Condition There are ONLY 2 choices, bc someone WILL WIN. You want the Dems to be different? JOIN!

Wrong. There are lots of swing voters in TX who hate Paxton but are "iffy" on trans sports (and OK with other trans issues). That's the reality. If they vote for Talarico, we can keep actual N@zi crooks like Paxton out of the Senate.

“If we just allow the human rights of SOME people to be violated, we can get people who are okay with human rights being violated elected” You could run a fucking ham sandwich against Paxton and get every non-MAGA vote. Do you have any actual data on these single-issue transphobe voters?

I find it very difficult to believe there is any significant number of voters for whom that’s the make-or-break issue. “Sure, everything costs more and we’re engaged in a pointless boondoggle in Iran, and Paxton is an unethical criminal, but on the other hand…girls’ soccer.”

This, to me, seems like an obvious answer if you make clear that there are lots of things that endanger safety and fairness and this is an extremely minor one for the vast majority of sports. And it obviously changes from athlete to athlete and sport to sport.

It’s only minor because there are very few trans athletes, the actual issue of safety would exist with many major sports -football (both types), basketball, rugby, baseball, volleyball and many others. And obviously fairness for anything to do with speed or strength.

Question: is biological boys playing in girls sports a "big deal in Texas"? I'm not sure there's been an issue with it, as far as I know.

he does not understand biology, trans athletes are already taking hormones that level the sports playing field..fairness and safety is not any issue...but using it to ban both girls and women sports is the real threat

So, how many trans athletes play in Texas sports? I Googled it- "There is no official or exact statewide count of transgender athletes playing in girls' sports in Texas, as state athletic governing bodies do not track this data"

Trans this, trans that. Let’s transfer power from the party protecting pedophiles, stealing your money, waging a forever was in Iran, etc back to Democrats who have plan for not making your dinner give you diarrhea…and fixing those other things, too.

the correct answer is "No, that's GOP fear-mongering. I'm here to talk about helping people, not bullying children. Next question"

Wealthy school districts DO have an unfair advantage- private/paid coaches, more resources for practice/equipment/travel, tutors to help keep academics up, etc. But I’d fall over with shock if anyone ever brought that up.

Also- what is the point of childhood athletics? Learning to work as a team? Learning the value of practice and hard work? Learning to win and lose with grace? Maybe getting a sports scholarship to college (which the right also hates and want to destroy)?!?

Please understand how politics work before losing your mind over this. If you really think Talarico is a bigot because he gave this answer on Fox while running for Senate in Texas, that DIDN’T EVEN SAY he agrees with trans athletes being banned from competitive sports then you are not getting it.

He not only gave himself wiggle room with a very reasonable answer, he properly reframed the issue from transphobia to one of fairness. The majority already believes it is unfair. We will get nowhere until we can convince them otherwise. Stamping our feet and holding our breath will not work.

And when his bid flames out now establishment dems will suggests it was due to him being "too socialist" rather than "He showed what he was when he threw trans people under the bus without blinking and the rest of us took him at his word"

Here's the answer every Dem should give "The Repubs are always in search of a new wedge issue to divide Americans. Today it's trans people playing sports. This is how Repubs distract from real issues. Tne number of trans people competing in sports is incredibly small...

Notice how they don't seem to give nearly as much of a shit about trans MEN in sports? Gee, I wonder why that is. ( I don't actually wonder, I definitely know why that is )

Because little tiny bearded transmen running around with men's teams (though they'd never even make the team to start) are the ones that are going to get hurt and haven't and will NEVER win anything?

How's the 5d chess working out? Is "trying to appease people who are only emboldened by concesssions" turning out to be the winning strategy you think it is?

As do 70% of American voters. Just like with gay marriage, activist have to work to get public sentiment to more than 50% on their side before politicians risk election over this issue. Do you think Obama really objected to gay marriage when he was elected?

The most legendary trans athlete in TX high school sports history is a Mack Beggs. Despite his pleas & absolute destruction of his competitors, 2x state wrestling champion was denied competing in boys division because birth certificate gender has always been UIL rules. It's never abouts fairness

“Boys & girls have been playing on the same sports teams at school since Title IX became law in 1972. The conservative Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 has a blueprint for ending legal protections for girls in sports & education.“ That shouldn’t be hard to say.

Well then it doesn't need to be brought up, the answer should just be "I support them since they aren't hurting anyone" Pretty simple. If he's pointing this out then it means he does view trans people as inherently harmful.

It's unfortunately Texas. Paxton is the sort of guy they've continually supported, and might well win this. And he's a murderous and absurdly corrupt and racist ghoul. They have to be slowly walked into the 21st century, and it's, again unfortunately, going to take time. So he finessed the question

Talarico sounds like a smart guy with a good handle on nearly every issue. While thoughts of Fetterman and Sinema still trigger latent PTSD in me, if he can notch a win in Texas and knock off a creep like Paxton, I say give him a shot. He's compassionate and smart, we need that in gov't.

We are now dealing with so much politicized bigotry at the national level that started with rightwing ideologues being elected to local school boards. The result has been erosion of minority civil rights, "tyranny of the majority"

The correct response is to point out that this is an issue manufactured by bigots to attack a population that constitutes less than 0.001% of the student athletic population and it doesn’t deserve to be dignified with a serious response.

"This is not an issue that should be of any concern for the U.S. Senate. Sports organizations should be free to issue eligibility rules to ensure fairness and safety as they see fit."

Transgender sports person here. Trans women - have more muscle mass - have larger lungs - have a bigger heart - have more fast twitch muscle fibres - have no periods - have a narrower pelvis resulting in being 10% faster in cycling and running and having fewer leg injuries. There is no debate.

I don’t agree that dismissing fairness and safety in sports out of hand is effective. I also think it muddies the arguments: “Children transitioning is not a thing” “Trans children should always be permitted to play in girls sports”
