With the upcoming elections and holiday season, a reminder to spend the season with those who love and support you. bsky.app/profile/cv-d...

C.V. Danes@cv-danes.com

I need to say something about the approaching holiday season. Many of us are going to be invited to family gatherings with people who voted for Trump. They are going to taunt us. They are going to gaslight us. They are going to try and say we shouldn't feel anger and betrayal. Fuck that noise /2

I'm guessing they also don't consider road kill a legitimate food item either.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different

The Trump regime is going to go full court press to wreck the elections. If you think your vote doesn't matter, you've already compiled in advance.

By my napkin math, total Bell Labs research expenditures from 1930-1980 were on the order of $50 billion in 2026 dollars. AI companies have spent ~$1 trillion so far: The equivalent of ~20 Bell Labs histories. In its history, Bell Labs researchers discovered the transistor, the solar cell, the laser

Saw one on the road yesterday, and it's even more stupid looking than the first time I saw one in the wild.

Even less reason to use youtube, then.

Brandon Wall@walldo.bsky.social

The YouTube experience is increasing friction to see videos from people you choose to subscribe to and instead serve the same 70 clips from 5 algorithm buckets ad nauseum with AI slop occasionally slipped in with the hopes that you accidentally watch enough AI slop to signal the algo you want more

I maintain that if there's one company that deserves to be destroyed, it's Facebook (I refuse to say Meta)

Dave Earley@earleyedition.bsky.social

The terms were previously set to take effect on October 30, with no way to opt out, setting off an outcry from news publishers, politicians, and press associations. As of October 23, Meta has made no other changes to the terms aside from the implementation date.

I wish he would. After the shellacking the Republicans are looking to get in the midterms, Trump running a third term would be epically bad for the Republicans.

Dave Earley@earleyedition.bsky.social

Trump again invokes claim he has the ‘right’ to run for president again. The US constitution unequivocally states that he can’t, which he knows. “I think I have the right to run again because they cheated,” Trump added with a coy smile, drawing applause from the crowd.

Anyone who thinks this is acceptable is a demonstrable sociopath.

Andy Carvin@acarv.in

Bellevue Police Capt John Stuck: “We get kids that once that school resource officer has put the gloves on, or they see that the gloves are on, they immediately comply without even touching them or doing anything. Which again, that’s a complete success for us.” Hmm, where have I heard this before?

This makes me sad. An example of the perverse place we're in as a society that this gets a billion dollar valuation instead of shut down from the start.

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

This is so fucking stupid. We already know how to engineer dogs to be more vicious to humans, and it’s called wolves. The path of domestication makes dogs more social. You make them less social by going back on that path. You also make them less trainable.

Part of this is evaluating if you even need it at all. I've been doing that a lot lately. Do I even need an alternative to your enshittificatied service? Nope.

Sick of paying subscription fees to all the major tech companies for software you don’t even enjoy using? Now’s the perfect time to hunt down alternatives. www.eff.org/pages/i-wan...

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

"A driver drove into cyclists. He should die in prison" Fixed.

Ryan Fonseca@ryan-fonseca.bsky.social

It's a choice (a bad one) to tell readers this driver "passed too close to cyclists" when there's video evidence showing he drove his car into them, made contact and hurt someone. Fellow journalists: we can explore the nuances of punishment for drivers without obfuscating their dangerous behavior.

But do you disagree with him, Senator? That's the question.

Read the whole thread. 2C was to keep climate change within the bounds of adaptability. 3C will mean abandonment will become official policy. 4C+ will wreck globalized society.

A smaller gap but a worse future. Current policies, result in warming being kept below 2.8°C by 2100. The most optimistic case, where all NDCs and net-zero targets are achieved keeps warming to 2.1°C. This is a worsening from last year's report, mainly because of the policy roll-backs in the US.

No, Marjory, you’re not “pro-life”, you prefer to deny a woman to decide over her own body. Rep Ilhan Omar isn’t “pro-abortion”, she defends a woman’s right to decide over her own body. Nobody, literally nobody, is “pro-abortion”. Abortion is sometimes the best decision, no matter how conflicted.

Sorry, whitey. You voted ruin for millions of brown people so we're supposed to be sad that ruin captured you too? That's what us commie liberals call karma.

Yes, Samsung, I get you just upgraded the OS on my phone. No, I don't need you to keep pestering me this morning on all the exciting new ways you are going to surveil me.

The difference between frogs and humans is that frogs will actually jump out of the pot when the water gets too hot.

Because we've been the frogs in this slowly heating pot of fascism since Saint Reagan took office. We've seen the oligarchs take our wealth, the govt slash our safety nets, the courts steal our rights, and the cops and crazies kill our kids. And it all feels a bit fascist to us. *sigh* Carry on. ✊🏻
