I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

"I'm gonna go be on X anyway and you can't stop me," I mean, with one exception, I'm not your dad (and that one exception is even more vehemently against X than I am, so there's that), so do what you want, my dude, as for me, I'm happy not to hang out in the Nazi bar, there are other places to drink

besides all that, what would even be the point? do they think it'd be just like in the "good old days"? which were a bit shit btw? no, it wouldn't be, nothing will ever be, time's arrow being time's arrow, what has been learnt cannot be unlearnt, and you'll never be who you were 10 years ago

I left for the same reasons I leave any physical places that Nazis and white supremacists feel welcome, safe, or even a little comfortable. It wasn't a temporary move as I don't see any benefit to returning.

1) The content and reach aren't worth the pits of corrosive slime you have to go through to get them. 2) X advocates likely (like the anti-divorce and -no contact people) need victims, and I see no reason to give them one. 3) If there's someone who I don't want to help, it would be the owner of X.

Imagine walking into a bar with Swastikas and kiddy porn plastered over the walls and going “hmmm, might just stop for one drink”. What the fuck is wrong with people? Get the fuck out of there

There's a saying "if there are 10 Nazis sitting at a table and you sit next to them and become friendly with them, there are now 11 Nazis at the table."

I go one step further and say "you do you, but if the place online you're happiest is the pedophile-friendly nazi bar, I'm going to make some assumptions about the kind of person you are."

I have a policy of not liking or reskeeting screenshots from Xitter, and that saves me a lot of time, but I do wonder why so many people are 1) still there and 2) bringing that Xitt here. Haha, look what Grok said. Lol, see how toxic it is there? Just. Why?

Very occasionally go to read a tweet in its natural environment, and immediately realise it is still a sewer, that is only getting deeper and fouler And as algorithms go, "for you" appears to mean "we hate you, here's some shit to upset you" Not going back

the concern i have with the entire left boycotting X is that platform segregation on political lines will give the right a monopolized space for free-range radicalization. what persuasion can the left achieve without engaging others? its the same as demanding that ppl cut off ties w non-leftists

I got permabanned on that shithole for inviting Louis Mosley to come to my town for some of the same treatment his fascist bitch of a grandfather and his blackshirts did, when citizens threw bricks at them til they ran away.

No one changes their mind because of something said to them on Twitter Some get overwhelmed by the lies, but me going there isn't going to stop Musk proliferatiing the bullshit Best option is to keep people away from it

I cut ties with non-leftists because they: Are for immigrants in concentration camps Claim schools are forcing kids to be trans Want gays killed or forced to be straight Hate persons of color Hate women Want to force women to carry rape pregnancies to term Refuse to give kids free lunch

There is zero viable discussion to be had on Twitter/X. It is a platform so overrun with bots, scams, and personal cronyism to Musk that its practically useless for any sort of authentic discussion. There's no reason to try to plant a flag on a smoldering pile of rubble just to prove a point.

I honestly think it'd be more worth trying to push for a leftist presence of *Truth Social* than on Twitter, if only because there's probably less spam to contend with.

Left wing voices are buried on X, the metrics and empirical evidence have made this clear. Elon allows just enough of it so that it is not obvious. Elon controls the algorithm, he controls the information, and just being there does not make you heard.

How tf are you supposed to persuade anyone when Elon’s thumb is on the algorithm amplifying Nazis and Russian bots and shadow-banning anyone to the left of Mitch McConnell? It’s a mug’s game.

You could use the same argument for insisting that we all spend our Sundays in Evangelical Christian churches, or attend Trump rallies. I tend to think that building spaces (in the real world as well as online) that people would rather spend time in is more powerful than trying to argue 'x' is bad.

You seem like an ok sort, but this is the entire point. Let them jerk each other off in an echo chamber. Devalue the space until it's just the nazi bar.

1. The right always had monopolized spaces. Right now it just happens to be X. 2. At this point, the platform is so skewed toward a particular oligarch's interests that it's nearly useless for having a real conversation. Yelling at bots, shills, and troll farm members is a waste of resources.

I really wish I could get my Uncle Bill's lesson on the Transitive Property of Nazism into textbooks. To wit: Nazism is transferred to any who accept its presence. If you hang out with Nazis, you are a Nazi. If you remain friends with a Nazi, you are a Nazi. X is a Nazi site. The rest is just math.

What evidence do you have that persuasion online works in any meaningful way? Can you point to 3 examples in the past 10 years where interaction with left-leaning voters persuaded significant #s of MAGA members to be less racist, sexist, or fascist?

X is already that space, because it's owned by a Nazi who can lift up whichever voices he wants and silence those he doesn't. This is just rationalization for doing what you want, not a real, serious concern, otherwise you'd be spending your time at Republican conventions.

Persuade them? Really? Us being there before didn't stop it from happening. They LIKE this. They ENJOY watching these chuckleheads hurt people. It's a waste of energy trying to get them back because you never will.

The problem is we were all losing tons of engagement to the right-wing accounts long before we left. I'm not sure going back solves that problem. The algorithm was against us as soon as Musk took over.

The far right aren't receptive to engagement. The only option to make it clear how horrific these people are is by leaving the platform. That's why they started to panic when we moved over to BlueSky. If there's no reasonable voices left over there people won't want to be stuck with them

They hate it when they only have themselves & bots to talk to. Just as the Star Trek entity in Day of the Dove, they feed on anger & hatred & argument, and they can't get that with each other. That's why they come here, & get quickly frustrated when we mass block & refuse to engage with them.

people can not listen to what I'm saying over here just as well as anywhere, no need to be a dog running after cars

My take: even if everyone from the center all the way to the far left went back, en masse, to posting and engaging on X, it will barely make a dent in the site, because the owner wants it to be a space for free-range radicalization and will always keep his finger on the scale to enable it.

What if a *2nd* site owned by a trillionaire fascist who also bankrolls the the GOP, continuously pushes support for Russia over Ukraine, gives voice to "Nazi's were cool" enthusiasts, and happily allows CSAM -- will we need to join that one too? What about a 3rd? Do we need to join them all?

A social media app under the ownership of a neo-Nazi simply is not a constructive place for dialogue. You will not succeed in deradicalizing anyone on Shitter. The website will radicalize you instead.

The real answer here is that ALL pro-MAGA posters on X are bots. They are either Russian bots or brain-washed MAGA bots. There is no point in arguing with them.

I think its much healthier if you are not engaging with trolls. Whether you like it or not, 99% of that page is that. It's much healthier if you use the same energy to rest, do hobbies and have more energy for local activism in your city or neighborhood.

And i'm saying that as being there from 2010, meeting many of my friend there, my partner, etc... I owe a lot to the people i meet there, but it became unusable after Musk bought it and far-right engagement were amplified. Every sane people i know left it for either bluesky or mastodon.

I can only speak for myself, but: I spent 16 years on Twitter. I got a lot of value out of it, but I do not believe persuasion is much of what happened there. Not at the best of times, and definitely not now.

I've cut ties with non-Democrats IRL. I don't need that toxicity in my life, whether in realspace or virtual space. Also, I'm not here to *debate* anyone. I'm here to talk about art, cats, and build community while bashing the fuck out of the current administration. I'm not the Nazi whisperer.

this is an incredibly dimwitted comment because the right is entirely detached from reality and beyond anything where discussion will bring them back, while the left is trying to survive the calamity unleashed by the former deprogramming one single person takes years.

“I am concerned that if I cancel my subscription to the Stormfront newsletter then the publication will be monopolized by white supremacists who will never see my reasonable takes in the ‘Letters to the Editor’ section.”

you’ve assumed already that every person on twitter is a nazi. i’m not talking about engaging nazis. i’m talking about trying to stop moderates and the generally disaffected from becoming radicalized further by allowing the Right elites to monopolize a space. but bsky isn’t known for nuance.

I'm going to be honest here: this precise line of argument has been liberal consensus for my entire adult kind, and it hasn't worked. Indulging the right has not moderated them. The opposite, in fact. Why do you think it will start working now?

Maybe if we try to understand their concerns about how my friends and family aren’t really humans a little harder this time it will work.

No sane person would walk into a Nazi bar in real life. Why do you expect people to use Nazi platforms with attached pedo porn generators?

Every time I look at Twitter the first thing I see is shitty people saying shitty things. Why should I feel obligated to hang out there? I have enough to do in my own life.

I'm not trying to persuade them because I do not have to. We are the majority. If we organize ourselves, we win. On the other hand, THEY need US. They can't win unless they interact with us: spreading FUD, planting/reinforcing wedge issues, & doing whatever they can to split & suppress our vote.

no one has ever been persuaded to change their views when given evidence which contradicts their views. you can’t win people over by debate

I’ve read many “conversations” on social media. Nobody is ever persuaded of anything. It’s hard enough in real life, when you’re able to look someone in the eye and smile.

"without engaging others" I was on twitter during gamergate and for many years after. "engaging" with those people just doesn't work. They are not there to learn, they are there to troll and abuse. All you will do is add to your stress. You're far better off focusing your energy elsewhere.

There are lots of people on here who I’d love to meet for a coffee someday (even ones I disagree with). There probably isn’t a single one on X that I feel the same way about. Sometimes it’s just as simple as that.

I have toyed with rejoining to argue against the right wing arses but a) I think it would be like Cuchulain pushing against the waves b) I don't want to contribute to membership figures c) surely I can come up with a better use of my time

indeed, no way should one go back to Twitter. It is dead. X is a graveyard. What does X even mean, multiplication, x marks the spot, halogyn, Roman 10 or just a unimaginative person who cannot think up a proper name? Just wondering.

The Susan Collins philosophy, and why we elect Dems but eventually let Reps back into office. We’re too weak to stick to anything permanently or legitimately fix anything, and far too willing to believe they’ve “learned their lesson”. The world should not trust us again until we stop this habit.

I’m told that Tesla makes the best solar storage battery. I won’t buy it. It’s easy to boycott the horrible cars. Sadly I can’t boycott SpaceX because I don’t purchase rockets. I’m never gonna use X, or insta or fb again. Billionaires openly bringing in genocidal fascism.

What pisses me off is that so many people and institutions consider this a legitimate source of information. It is a white power site. Stop sharing things from it, people.

was kind of irked yesterday when a reporter referred to x as the best news site, sadly the news organizations avoid Bluesky & are only represented on the other site, some only existed here for a day & vanished as if by some corporate order to ignore the users represented here

Not sure if everything you said there was paraphrasing the reporter, or if the part after "sadly" is your words, but if the latter, be advised that there are gobs of news sites posting regularly on this site. Examples upon request.

He also thinks he's going to build a "sentient" car that flies and can drive upside down. And is less qualified to run a website than *I* am (I actually finished my CS degree), and terminated anyone who might tell him if he has a bad idea. Why would anyone *want* to go back there?

Conditions needed to have me reconsider leaving X: - Rehire all the trust and safety people Musk fired. - Fire all the people that stayed as employees of Musk. - Rename X back to Twitter - Fire Elon Musk!

It's all about $. They go back because they are shilling a new book, podcast or business. They don't care about CSAM or doxxing rape victims if it means they lose money. It's gross.

I wouldn’t forget about keeping an eye on his voting machine antics in a few weeks either - if his and Donald’s post 2023 election claims are to be believed.

Bill Thompson@billt.bsky.social

“I miss the old BierKeller. I know it’s mostly Nazis now and you get beaten up if you speak out, but if my friends and I sit together & whisper & don’t draw attention the beer and bratwurst are really good” Liberals deciding to ‘re-engage’ with X despite all they know about how Musk has debased it.

Honestly, I’m unclear why so many non-MAGA folks still have their teslas. Keeping it DOES support Elon. (And I don’t care it you used to think he wasn’t crazy!)

I get it, but save the outrage for the people who actually call the shots. Ethical consumerism is a tool primarily of the elite to make systemic change impossible by framing it as an individual rather than collective responsibility. ->

Perhaps because they are not independently wealthy and can't afford a new car right now even though they despise Musk. I know people in this situation. I have seen quite a few Teslas with the logos removed. I saw one with an Audi logo.

Cars are expensive. Most people can't just turn around and buy another one, and Teslas aren't selling well secondhand, either.

You think that means they can still afford it 🤔 my car is 27 years old and if it goes boom, I can't afford a 15k car plus insurance going up etc. Must be nice to be able to afford that. Heck I'd give anything to EVER have a car under 10 years old 😆 🤣 Maybe once I get my house paid off.

Er, no? I'm extremely pleased my Scottish government today announced it was removing itself from that platform, only hope the UK parliament follows them promptly

The number of generally respectable institutions that use that sewer is unbelievable. That Musk is a Fellow of the Royal Society is a stain on their previously good name.

I just checked and although members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the motion there has been no response from the party yet The Scottish Greens did act though, and their last post on X was Thursday, so although my earlier post may be premature I am hopeful

It sucks that you lose that because of fuckface. So many things we enjoyed or treasured have been destroyed by the stink of this regime.

ALL of the other social media sites are owned by rich oligarchs who are helping DJT and his Fascist puppeteers ruin the country. It would be great if we could organize something where everyone stopped using them for a set period of time, but I seriously doubt that could work. They're too addictive

I'm just a rando, but yeah: Bluesky: people getting annoyed by Will Stancil and Libs v. Leftists snark. Twitter: controlled and manipulated by the world's richest man, a genocidal Nazi who is trying to buy American Democracy and who wanted to party with Jeffrey Epstein. Truly a conundrum.

Locked and walked ?3 or 4 years ago and never went back. I don’t drink in a Nazi bar, ever. Frankly, you shouldn’t either. And if you do, as my youngers and betters so eloquently put it, you suck, you’re a Nazi and you will be called out for it.

I know some people are having that discussion John but currently I'm more worried about if it's okay that Pitt footballs defense is kind of playing like ass while the offense hasn't shown the ability to score touchdowns. I can enjoy all this and discuss it on bsky, the app for sports!

I still post book stuff there, because I kinda feel I have to, but the only other reason to go there is to see what nutty crap the right is trying to desperately pass off to save the midterms. The Talarico stuff is hilarious.

I wouldn’t have any difficulty believing that these posts were written by some of the fascist fucks who regularly hang out on X. The problem is that there’s only so much fun to be had in preaching to the choir & how can they enjoy themselves if there aren’t any minorities to terrorize?

I continue to be surprised that I lasted as long as November 2024 after the pile of filth took it over and enabled a bunch of Groyper pukes who would've flunked basic SA training in 1923. And their standards were hardly high-minded ones.

That was the one big thing I found quite disappointing about Gruber’s argument on going back to Twitter - “Bluesky is boring and too political.” It’s like, there’s a good reason for that - Bluesky got the block button, and there’s a damn election going on right now.

I can't believe people are still buying Teslas. There are options that may not be perfect, but the companies are not runned by that South African fascist.

When reports of bot farms getting bombed by Ukraine came out, was curious how much Twitter X was impacted. Still not enough to get me to go back full time. ❌

I didn't think there was a debate. The choices are: 1. Contribute financially (through ad views, creative content, subscriptions) to the richest man in the world, who is an actual fascist, who uses his wealth and power to promote his reactionary views, or 2. Don't I took "2" about 2 years ago.

Musk made it so easy for me - I went to check on my account that had been completely dormant for over 2 years, and found it has been “permanently locked” for “inauthentic behaviors”. (WTF?)🤷‍♀️ I’d guess Grok read through all my posts and found them unacceptably unsympathetic to The Fascism™️.😏

I hate to defend Musk but this happens to accounts with my employer regularly because having been abandoned, they get hacked and used as spambots.

It’s mainly people that really don’t care about politics at all, because they’re privileged enough that they don’t think it affects them. There are still a lot of communities that are most active on Twitter.

I'm on both Twitter and bluesky. Bluesky is much more civil, but it lacks political debate. On the other hand, I've had to block so many really offensive accounts on Twitter and only once on bluesky. I'm of two minds.

I used to engage in that over there. One day a dude cited a falsehood. I said "That's incorrect and you know it is". They responded "Yeah maybe it is, but..." and carried on regardless. They know it's bull. Thing is, in their core, they like it. Proof doesn't sway that, maybe only lived experience?

They don’t… It’s always people who never left that want everyone to come back making these posts because they don’t like being called Nazis.

The Greatest Generation made profound sacrifices during World War II, enduring strict government rationing of everyday goods like food, gasoline, rubber, and metal. Meanwhile, today's generations can't even be bothered to take a break from X, Facebook, Instagram, and Amazon.

They’ll get there. I don’t use any of them now. Ever. Not even as a “click this link” way. Erased twitter account in 2022, two weeks after El Musko bought it. Killed off the rest of them in November 2024. Everyone has a breaking point for hypocrisy.

If we don’t participate on X the advertisers will leave and Elon will lose more $$ and engagements which he thrives off of. Let it be the 💩show that the 🤡’s social is. At first I thought we need to participate over there to keep disputing the lies but the cultist & bots post & don’t read the comment

It’s So frustrating so many people I follow have gone back to Twitter and have stopped posting on BlueSky 😩 I’ve been going over there recently to just get more news .. ugh

When I see one of these posts my response is "Fuck off, I'm not going back to that shithole, you do so if you want because it's a free country but I will have no respect for you if you do".

I genuinely deleted everything Meta and Twitter the day I saw Zuckerberg standing with those ghouls, and Musk threw up the salute. Twice. Yeeted it all. Haven't gone back.

I did that… and Musk “permanently locked” it for “inauthentic behaviors”. Maybe “not posting” is now a bannable offens ? 🤔 I am glad I’d already deleted all my personal photos off there before the Grok porn started.🫣

I used to have an automation that pushed posts automatically to X via the API. The other day I learnt you now need to pay for that. Lol get all the way fucked my dude. At least you'll finally start making money off all those bot accounts I guess?

I mean, someone can go back, but we are just going to assume they are a nazi and pedophile. so.... up to them how they want to be viewed, really.

I get the anger at X, and the throttling of Starlink during Ukrainian drone ops is a real problem: a private owner holding a kill switch over a defender's comms should never be the case. Kyiv needs redundancy it controls, not a billionaire's mood swings.

I literally used Twitter too much to stay there. My account was a few months older than Musk’s, and I was on it all the time. That’s how I could tell how gross it was getting; I had to quit for my moral and mental health. Jumped into Bluesky as soon as I got an invite.

I just looked at his homepage. He gets $12,000 a week for sponsorship, which is great for him. Better for his readers than a paywall. But he’s pretty clearly a clickbait whore.

John Gruber, who I’m otherwise a fan of, wrote an abominable post last week saying that X is once again the “place to be”. Incredibly disappointing

This was about Meta sites, but IMHO it applies just as much about leaving or not going back to X. bsky.app/profile/adam... We can indignantly claim the high road as much as we want, but unless we make this place (or other non-X places) welcoming and enjoyable, we're not really moving the needle.

Adam Lasnik@adamlasnik.net

Related: it’d be awesome if we as a community were as emphatic about personally encouraging individuals to be a part of Bluesky as we are virtue signaling our departure from Meta properties. (“Yeah? Well *I* quit Instagram in 1993! What took you so long?!”)

Only thing I'd go back there for is to post "Is it okay to try Bluesky?" as much as I could Two key things why i left that site: A) During civil unrest in my country it became very obvious the algorithm was stoking it ☹️ 2) The Viz Comic left. If you know what The Viz is, you know how big that is

What is wrong with these people is that they have lost their critical thinking skills. Assuming they had them to begin with.

The answer is: no. Unless you're also a fascist, in which case my personal opinion of you and everything you do is also: no. (generic "you" here, not saying you in specific if you're not on the platform formerly known as Twitter)

I stayed on Twitter after he bought it until I received an ad for white supremacy - which took like a week or so. I’d rather just not use a social media platform than go back there.

With you 100%! Maybe if Zelenskyy destroyed ALL the Russian data center bot farms And if all the other bot farms in all the nearby RU-friendly countries shut down And all the bot farms in China shut down And all the bot farms in the USA shut down THEN I might go back to twitter. Not before.

These are the same sort of people who bought Hogwarts Legacy even though they don't give a shit about video games, because trans people were asking gamers to boycott it.

With you 100%. Under no circumstances will I willingly patronize a Musk owned business. I recognize that as an oligarch, his businesses are sometimes unavailable. But I won't make him richer if I can help it.
