Carrie Syczylo owns a coffee shop in little Monrovia, IN. Like many small business owners, she was inclined to avoid politics for fear of alienating customers. Then a massive data center announced plans to come to town. TUES 7pm ET | 6CT Links in the comments: #HoosierSky #Election2026

Also, in Indiana, voting in the primary is how you earn the right to run for office under that party. There is no registration: whatever party you voted in the last two primaries is who you can run as. If you don’t, it’s the discretion of your local party chair. Don’t give them that power over you.

I really do think you should vote. Your actual vote is secret, but the fact that you voted is not. Being a regular voter means campaigns will try to win you over. The more trans people are regular voters the more likely it is that candidates will worry about needing to win our votes.

Reminder: if you currently go to school or work at 8am in the part of Indiana that is EDT, you're actually going to work at 6am & calling it 8am. Starting Sunday, you'll start pretending that 7am is actually 8am.

If the argument is that the sun doesn't need to try to line up with the clock, let's just do UTC & call it done! Our computers already run UTC & we have all sorts of bugs *every year* trying to convince our logical computers to lie to us about what time it is.

The movie 2010 explained that the reason the HAL 9000 malfunctioned, killing 4* people, was that it was told to lie & it didn't know how. This is when people point out how often AI lies, but you have to have consciousness to lie. Current AI just gives errors, not lies. *3001 changes this to 3.

Y'all can just start school & work at 7am for real, or even 6am. Own it. Explain you want to get the work out of the way early so you can go golfing or whatever after work. I think people just know that this is a harder sell & just want to trick people to wake up earlier.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

helenwebberley.comAre transgender sports bans really about protecting women? | Dr Helen WebberleyThe data says no. Those most hostile to women are most in favour of banning trans athletes.

If you must use TV for news, PBS Newshour is the best that you can do there. Cable news is maybe only useful during something live, and only if they’re not speaking but carrying someone else live. For that, you have C-SPAN.

Oliver Willis@owillis.bsky.social

Political media is the only topic other than “small dogs with names inspired by Superman” that I feel like I can honestly refer to myself as an “expert,” and I implore you to stop watching cable news. It doesn’t inform you. TV news is one of the worst ways possible to get the news.

If you want to actually be confident that your platform is your own, post exactly 3 things on centralized social media: 1. Headline 2. Website 3. atproto handle (with same domain as your website) Content goes on 2 & 3. It isn’t that you *must* leave those platforms, but you shouldn’t count on them.

It's already illegal. Congress banned it near-unanimously in 2022. That law allows the ban to be lifted only if Russia withdraws from Ukraine. He's simply breaking the law that's already on the books.

David S. Bernstein @dbernstein.bsky.social

Republican US Rep Brian Fitzgerald tweets that he will introduce a bill to block purchases of Russian oil. Don Bacon (R-Neb) tweets that he will co-sponsor. Obviously this won’t happen during campaigning recess (and Trump could veto anyway) but interesting push-back on Trump.

“I prefer the term artificial person, myself”

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

BAIER: The president says 'SI.' Are you into SI or AI? BEZOS: I do like SI, because 'artificial' is not a very flattering thing. Like, nobody wants an artificial sweetener, artificial flavoring.

All of this, and also to add: Hazing is how cults filter out whistleblowers. The people that would put a stop to future bad behavior, or even just report it, don’t put up with being hazed.

Kat Tenbarge@kattenbarge.bsky.social

Another thing about fraternities is that the hazing rituals where slightly older young men would physically, mentally emotionally and sometimes even sexually abuse slightly younger young men have always disturbed and upset me greatly. And it’s really telling that I’ve seen men defend those too

When you see someone bullied, they're typically not the REAL target. The bully is targeting others to scare them into conformity. "Don't do what that person did, or I'll come for you, too!" Give some thought into what you've refused to do or speak up about because of your own fear of bullying.

saying you’re using AI to get out of just remembering this stuff is not a good way to sell it imo like i get that yall think of the working class as an anonymous pile of lumpy brawling illiterates but few of em are as eager to convert to brainlessness as you think they are

At the risk of adopting a hateful trope, “How do you define a journalist?” Or “Political balance”? “The board will be composed only of journalists, with no executives or shareholders allowed to join, the person said, adding that the board will be required to have political balance.”

I keep telling people about how the Christian "Left Behind" books, literal fantasies about the apocalypse, were super, super popular in the late 90s/ early 2000s. I used to read them. Major disasters, while terrible, were also framed by evangelical churches as titillating...sexy almost.

Dave Willner@dwillner.bsky.social

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

US, Indiana, Columbus Yes, I just spent the morning talking to strangers to make sure they vote!

“Never Forget” is honestly bad advice for trauma. Re-living a traumatic event, watching video of it, etc, is simply picking a scab off of a wound & preventing healing.

If you were one of the people I saw waiting over 30 minutes to get gas at Costco today, I never want to hear you say you can't have an electric vehicle because you don't want to wait to charge.

We were there to let the people targeted by ICE know that some of us love them. We see our own story of immigration & persecution in them. We want their families to have the same opportunities we have. Shout out to @flagsforgood.com for hooking me up with that flag just hours earlier!

As stupid as the Trump renaming of geographic features is, I do think major map companies should follow the regional authorities. For the USA, that means USGS. That means Apple & Google shouldn’t instantly change names when an EO is signed, but should when official. Maps are *always* political.

Also, we in the USA deserve this, collectively. As a group, we either voted for this or didn’t vote to stop it. These are the stupid consequences. Seeing “Gulf of America” should motivate you to help flip this country left. Voting every election including primaries is bare minimum.

Finally, just because USGS changes the name doesn’t mean people living here must change their language. Language is famously controlled by the mob, which is why literally and figuratively are both synonyms and antonyms. 🙄 Map companies should also list “common name” next to “official name”.

Tim Curry and Dolly Parton have taught us not only that you should be bigger, weirder, gayer, and freakier, but also that those qualities are what people will love about you. The things that make you strange and amazing are the things that will resonate with other strange and amazing people

Someday, websites that take security seriously will only allow passkeys. People might choose to avoid those sites, but there is no getting around the fact that website passwords are a vulnerability.

How do we choose the leaders after violence? Violent revolutions have a tendency to have a worse government after. Reminder: the American Revolution started with creating the new form of government first. The Revolutionary War was after the first Continental Congress. You still need politics.
