It's also an administrative abomination. I don't know about you but I don't think something like FEMA should be in the same department as ICE goons

How else could DHS raid FEMA funds at the end of each fiscal year? 🤬 Originally , it wasn’t under any other agency-should’ve stayed that way. Maybe it could fit (awkwardly) under Dept. of Interior or Commerce

I'm strongly inclined towards the interior department but I definitely think a law should at the very least be passed to make raiding its funds illegal

Not good enough. Abolish ICE is good, but doing it this way means the people who worked there go back to their ordinary lives and tell their MAGA friends wistful stories of the days they were Badass Mofos. No consequences is no good. We need these people arrested and prosecuted.

Bring it back when Dems are in charge. DHS has always been an overreach and fear project… an overreaction by a Repub administration. That’s the waste in govt spending

💯 The whole lot of them have to go they created a police state after 911 and now have abused their power killing in the streets. It's a gestapo and the concentration camps are being built as we speak. Horrible.

Abolishing the cancer of DHS and removing enablers from positions of power act to stabilize the patient. But to eradicate the disease, we must radically rethink how the OS of our self-governance operates. Like any other system of rules, it cannot rely on good faith to survive.

“We know that DHS was intentionally established with an overbroad mission and unchecked power. The last two years have made it visible what so many communities have actually been saying for decades: That DHS, frankly, is the single greatest threat to our public safety today,” Ramirez said.

“From its inception, those in power have wielded DHS as a weapon. Widespread illegal and abusive detention of immigrants, violent racial profiling, and state overreach — including domestic surveillance, civil rights violations via the USA PATRIOT Act,” Ramirez said.

The administration has targeted hundreds of thousands of immigrants with arrests, detention, and deportations, often openly defying court orders and even constitutional safeguards to wreak havoc and invoke fear.

At least eight people have been killed on the streets by DHS agents since the beginning of Trump’s second term, at least 57 have died in immigration detention, and thousands have been “disappeared” within the shadowy detention network or to places abroad.

Brava, Congressmember! This is the way! Now all Dem reps will be forced to take a side and we'll get to see what their values really are. It'll become even clearer which reps will actually fight to protect us & which will keep playing possum as the rule of law is shredded & ppl are killed.

Restore the Immigration and Naturalization Service emphasis on service. Let’s put together a comprehensive immigration policy that’s equitable.

Yes! Exactly @ramirez.house.gov EXACTLY! #AbolishICE #DissolveDHS bsky.app/profile/trut...

Truthout@truthout.org

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

I dunno, guys. I am with you on rolling back all the Trump shit, but we do need immigration and customs enforcement and border patrol (small letters). And should that roll up to a cabinet level dept with related functions like TSA? Maybe!

This kind of pandering is what loses elections. Sure. DHS needs to go away. You already have an agency for civil rights. DOJ. Fix that. As to DHS, put CBP back where it was and dissolve the rest. Improve FBI and CIA & other interagency coordination

While you can agree or disagree with the idea, doing it 3 weeks prior to the midterms while the GOP is busy shooting itself in the foot everyday, seems unwise. It's just giving the GOP more issues to use to motivate their loony voters.

Disestablishing DHS is a valid platform and should be considered in light of the excesses it’s perpetrated since inception. Simultaneously, It will be important to identify how we will reform state power to coordinate federal internal defense. And giving the DoD more power should NOT be an option.

I'm old enough to remember that DHS was only supposed to be an agency that coordinated intelligence between the other alphabet agencies to prevent compartmentalization and prevent potential terror threats. They have *never* performed that role afaik, so they have no worthy purpose. Delete.

I'm so glad people are talking about this because the whole history and background of DHS is something a lot of us, including myself, don't really understand. All I really know is what's happened over the last 2 years. TBS, one assumes that DHS began for all the right reasons. Post 9/11 it...

... appeared to be something necessary. But that's the only thing, unfortunately, a lot of us really know. My question is that, apart from whether it should be abolished all together, does the country need something like DHS. Are there parts of it that are actually beneficial to the security of...

RETVRN the US Customs department and put immigration enforcement under the umbrella of the Department of Labor. Make immigration courts Article III courts. Abolish third country renditions.

before DHS was created; we had independent agencies doing a better job keeping us safe! it was created to hide the fact of an illegal war in 2 countries at the same time! it was never considered by me to be a legitimate way to go about making our country safer! it is antithetical to independence!

What? Humanity still matters? YAY. Vote blue. While there is still another option other than the fascist red hat kleptocracy. Don't skip this one. Then let's get on with living life fully, not worrying about the current F47's next corruption, and MYOB and don't worry about what I do personally.

DHS was an unnecessary bureaucracy and an overreaction by President Bush after 9/11. It created unsustainable federal spending and engaged in systemic abuses almost from its inception. I agree completely: DHS needs to be abolished, not just ICE.

That’s my rep! She’s amazing, and comes from a local independent political organization that I’m affiliated with. She’s the real deal!

When an organization degenerates beyond a certain point, and strays completely from its central purpose, the best path is to just dismantle it and start anew. DHS has become a repressive Gestapo, that is not its intended purpose, it is just that Trump and his minions repurposed it that way.

Please hire a good political consultant. SOUNDS LIKE DEFUND THE POLICE, which went over so well. You need to "reform" ICE and CBP and force them to operate under strict rules. You need to prosecute violations of those rules at the state level.

"DHS, frankly, is the single greatest threat to our public safety today,” Ramirez said.

will this pass? absolutely not. is it a good thing she introduced it anyway? hell yes. show us you're doing something, guys! show us you're trying! actually fight!

We warned everyone when Dubya created it that DHS would become like this. It did exactly what we said it would do.

Yes, absolutely. DHS was created as a reflex after the WTC attack. An attack, by the way, that could have been avoided if the FBI had listened to field agents. Placing all law enforcement under a single agency was always wrong.

And there is the real reason it was introduced before midterms not after. I appreciate the gesture but let's see if it get reintroduced in a year when it might have a chance of movement.

After they abolish the DHS, I want to know every person who was raped by DHS agents, informants, or by anyone else paid by DHS to conduct rapes. When I say rape, I mean anyone who was paid to have sex with people who didn't know they were DHS agents. I want to be able to sue for sexual damages.

The real test is what happens to the legal status of the undocumented immigrants. As long as they remain "illegal", someone can always abuse and vilify them for political purposes or just to be dicks.
