You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

having fun once again searching book summaries for “aris thorne” “marcus sterling” and “julian vance” if I find all three I award myself a little prize (the prize is to sob for the future of literature)

There are some who will say "yeah well they won't say anything that will make their MI5 handlers mad," and I do think this is a minority concern at best. For the most part this is nothing directly said, just a shared understanding. You don't even need to put it in writing.

Phil McDuff@mcduff.bsky.social

So... That Turning Point/UVF documentary with all the people admitting to actual crimes is going nowhere except the memory hole then, huh? Damn, you'd think that'd be at least one or two real journalists in the country capable of feeling shame about what that says about the industry.

Nobody sends out an order explaining that you shouldn't take a shit on the office floor, either. It's just Not Done. Same with this. You just Don't Notice It. The "or else" is implicit in the very fabric of the workplace environment.

I think next time you get spitting mad about the obvious radicalisation and hitlerian tendencies of the left, you should reflect on precisely why neither you nor any of your friends and coworkers had a single thing to say about Tory party advisers meeting up with the UVF to discuss contract killings

In Rowling's telling, the movement for trans equality isn't about trans people wanting to live comfortably and authentically post-transition, whether that means using men's spaces, gender-neutral spaces, or women's spaces. Instead it's about interlopers seeking to penetrate women's spaces only.

Six years later, that pose of concern is gone, as is any acknowledgement that slightly more than half of all trans people were assigned female at birth. Rowling today speaks only about transgender women, and only in the most odious terms imaginable.

Phil McDuff reposted

I felt I really needed to write about Rowling's essay, not because it's new, but because it's so poisonous and ugly that it felt like sanitizing her not to acknowledge it on my trans news site.

Assigned Media@assignedmedia.org

There's no pretense left. J. K. Rowling made her hate for trans women clear in a slur-filled screed slurring them a dozen times and describing them as deceitful and dangerous. So writes @evanurquhart.bsky.social this morning on Assigned Media. *WARNING: Article quotes Rowling's hateful language.*

It's important to recognize this - and I think it's important for me, as a trans man, to clearly say I recognize this: Rowling's primary motivating factor is an intense irrational hatred of trans women. There's nothing else but that in the entire 2200 word essay.

Damn, being the serious sensible left still doesn't get the capitalist ghouls on your side, huh? Obsessing over fiscal rules and bond markets doesn't make them regard you with an iota less contempt? Wow.

I’m seeing people reacting by pointing out that he’s obviously wrong. I appreciate that, but it’s also a pointless exercise. The problem isn’t that he’s wrong. The problem is that this is normal in American politics — and it’s been normal for a while.

In fact I will say the Earnest and Pious Charismatic Ethnic Minority political figure (AOC, Mamdani, El-Sayed) has been a pretty good bet for the American left so far, whereas the Disaffected Gruff White Guy Showcasing True Masculinity (Fetterman, Platner) has been a worse bet. Just an observation.

Never examining your failures, the failures of your own decisions, the failures of the party you voted for, or the failures of the politics and ideology you profess to believe in is a solid recipe for change. Never holding anyone responsible for anything is how things get better, it's axiomatic

Fundamentally here this isn't even about market reforms or whatnot. This is about capitalists being mad that the ecocidal fascist didn't get in to let the Amazon burn. This is rage that their death drive has been curtailed. It is deeply fucking sick.

Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.

I'm sure this bodes well for the imminent victory and return to power of the bourgeois liberal party, and how these same people will react to the likely direction it will take in regards to pushing back on the fascists they definitely did not help empower in any way whatsoever

Honestly the complete lack of coverage on this Turning Point UK story is going to do me in. Compare Israel to South Africa and The Lads will go through your bins, but have links to senior right-wing politicians and brag about being able to hire hitmen? Nada. Not interested. Budget's soon y'know

Phil McDuff reposted

The Lads clearly know who Turning Point UK are, and not just that but that they are "unabashedly racist" and have links to both Reform and the Conservatives. Reeeaaaaally feels worth commenting on the fact that this organisation was recently exposed as claiming to be able to contract assassinations
