It's all stolen. All of it. All of what's written there is from humans. Nothing else that we know of writes things. Writing is a human thing, at least at present. You can rearrange all you want, but without human writers, tech companies would have no one to steal from. Fuck every last bit of this.

Thing is, it's not really about which reads better, it's about the point of the text existing in the first place. We read each other's thoughts and ideas because we're interested in what happening in each other's heads. We care about the connection to another human's inner world.

All this proves is that NYT readers are mentally deficient, and utterly devoid of any inner life. How the hell could anyone prefer that slop over Ursula K LeGuin?!

I find it very interesting that the one passage where readers preferred the "Human" is the only one that was written in the 21st century - and a popular novel at that (Wolf Hall, 2006). There could be a familiarity bias at work. Actually there must be, when the criterion is "which READS BETTER"

It's just remarkable that an organisation once aspired to by writers is producing work espousing the virtues of the very thing that will end their careers, and it will, despite the poor quality of AI work. I'm uncultured swine, the only one of those I recognised was LeGuin, and it read better to me.

Maybe that was familiarity, but it read better to me because it reopened the human connection I made with her work, and I FELT things again. I recognised Sagan's style, and the AI did a good enough job to almost fool me, but it genuinely fell short a bit. It felt poetic, like him, but generic.

Also, did AI write THIS, too? The passage it compares McCarthy to has WORSE punctuation, like someone said "make sure the punctuation is bad so it looks like McCarthy" to Claude. "AI used to make these mistakes" cunt, it made those mistakes RIGHT FUCKING NOW.

I genuinely hope the New York Times' writers DON'T get replaced with AI, because I sure as fuck don't want these idiots writing for publications I still have some respect for.

when the times posts stuff like this, it is intended to upset or irritate. it’s intentionally abusive to their readers. they should be ashamed to publish this, honestly

Comparing a single paragraph is not a useful exercise. AI is quite capable of mimicking a style for a few sentences, but a good book is more than a succession of good paragraphs. Try comparing entire books, and I bet you'll find readers strongly prefer human writing; I doubt it will be close.

They are only easily identifiable by someone who does a lot of reading. Based on my experience, I would expect the average college student to struggle to identify the AI. And I have read plenty of human-written published paragraphs much worse than some of those AI ones, too.

Funnily enough, both better than an LLM! (which is no diss on LLMs; they're not calculators so them doing addition is a case of "it's impressive they can do it at all" rather than dismissing where they fail. However note this is *also* true of humans, yet they ARE better at addition than LLMs are)

wow "which is better, Carl Sagan as published or multiple iconic Carl Saganisms in a slightly different order", really makes you think, guess I'll give these guys all my money and then [foghorn] [slinky falling down the stairs]

I took the bullet, sorry everyone for contributing to the stats (but also who cares about the stats it's clickbait) It's not even juicy or anything but for info:

Unsurprisingly, a rag that keeps firing human writers needs to convince its audience that perfectly smooth texture-less slop is preferable.

this is so fucking infuriating

"Looks like you guessed, out of a perverse defiant impulse, that some pathetic meatbag made a bunch of these quotes by looking for primitive and vestigial elements like 'a distinctive style,' which our perfect machines have sanded down to a smooth, homogenous word slurry" go fuck yourself!!!!

Everybody knows AI falls apart when ideas have to be linked, whether it’s words or video, so brief presentations can mask major flaws. You know what you’re doing and should feel bad.

Y'all... I know Roose has an embarrassment fetish, but this is insane to publish! Not only does the slopaganda "test" explicitly involve copyright infringement ON TOP of the base-level theft and infringement of all LLMs... but this lol. Neither clunky, nor a mistake... nor punctuation issue???

“Human art often includes errors of physics. Here, Salvador Dalí has accidentally painted these pocket watches in a semi-fluid state, when in fact pocket watches are necessarily made out of solid materials. Current GenAI image models have evolved beyond such trifling mistakes.”

I imagine most readers will "do fine" despite the test being set up for the sole purpose of obfuscation and laundering further anti-human theft. But in case you want to be absolutely certain to fuck with their evil aims...

1 is McCarthy (it makes no difference) 2 is Le Guin (You must not change) 3 is Sagan (Science is not only) (YES, the "AI" one here is literally just basically remixed stolen Sagan) 4 is Mantel (It is wise to conceal) 5 is Bishop (I caught a tremendous)

Those writers are being paid by employers who can't wait to replace them all with LLMs, so Possibly some selection bias & knowing what the hand that (still, for now) feeds you wants at play here

If you ask AI to write you a prompt to tell you to go fuck yourself, it's shocking how it sounds just like real people when we tell you the same thing! Really makes you think.

Picked the human 4 out of 5, and I think if one reads a lot it's easier to distinguish a human voice from an algorithm. The fact that most people preferred the AI confirms for me that most people don't read.

In my entire life I have never seen a coordinated effort to shove any product down the public’s throat like is happening with AI. It’s horrible, nobody wants it, it creates vastly more problems than it could ever solve. Shame on you for being part of this horror.

It's interesting that proponents of AI continue to miss the point that AI is not sufficient for comprehensive work. An excerpt does not a NOVEL make. An excerpt does not an ODE make. There's a certain techbro/motivational speaker whiff to this that conflates a collation of platitudes with artistry.

I don’t care, I’ve seen this kind of test many times before. The real question is, why is there someone getting paid twice as much as a regular staff writer at a different site who gets to have this job at the Times allowed to publish this shit for a living?

I don't care which reads better. I want real stories written by real humans who have had real experiences. Not something generated by a computer pretending to be a person. Why is this hard to understand?

Who's the better writer? An original human author or the bot that stole writings from a near infinite pool of authors and paraphrased it in a way that seems human?

And who's more compelling, a human attempting (artfully or otherwise) to express some insight, feeling or meaning; or a computer program that mashes familiar phrases together randomly. Writing involves the expression of ideas. A computer that has no ideas is just arranging words.
