Post

I'm going to repeat this here: The last words out of my principal's mouth before I said, "I quit." ... "You have to let the *math thing* go. Your job is to make them feel good about themselves." So, here we are.

I’ll be honest if you did this to me and didn’t let me cheat and name my research scientist father, I would pause for a moment because John B Goodenough has passed on.

I was scrolling up my feed, saw this, and my brain instantly went “Katie Mack”, then I scrolled slightly further up and noticed you were the one who posted it 😀👍

Those of us that lived in Southern California in the 70’s and 80’s can quickly name Dr. Kate Hutton and Dr. Lucy Jones as scientists and science communicators. Let’s also not forget Dr. Susan Hough (@seismosue)

They surround us, Scientists, in so many ways. Rural Farm Soil Scientis and River Water Scientists and Agriculture Scientists for our orchards and rice fields here throughout California's country

I scrolled all the way down and I can't believe I'm the first to note that 25 + 76 = 101. Someone picked the wrong rounding function.

Yes, I figured. Picking exactly 200 correspondents (or a multiple) was also not ideal, but that's why "banker's rounding" exists to avoid upward bias: round to even. So 24.5 to 24 and 75.5 to 76.

On the spot like that, I would probably have said Tyson (derogatory) just because I'm bad at recalling things under pressure. I'm also very positive he's alive because he has not stopped talking, and won't until he's dead.

Yes, which is unfortunate considering he’s a creeper as well as an annoying windbag. Brian Cox is a million times better crazy physics explainer.

Is it possible we forgot as a society (broad strokes) that people we see on our screens normally have jobs or careers that arent always "TV actor/actress, personality, or influencer"? On know individually thats not true, but in the "survey 100 people" might just have forgotten what scientist means.

One of my colleagues did this with her classes a few years ago, and almost 100% were successful, but a whole bunch named one or more of their parents. Ah, the joys of teaching at a private high school in a university town.

But at least Goodall and Hawking WERE scientists... Bill Nye, love him as a science popularizer, but he's kinda not actually a scientist. And Musk is DEFINITELY not a scientist.

I will grant that he wasz absolutely, a scientist ... 40 years ago. He left science to become an entertainer, specifically to pursue comedy. And he's great at his job! People are many things throughout their lives. Now he's a science popularizer and educator. Very important jobs that are not lesser!

That truly blows my mind. If you did that survey in just my Bay Area county, I would bet that nearly half would be able to name a living scientist who is actually a friend or relative.

Sorry to dunk on the Musk haters but like it or not he is a fellow of probably the most prestigious scientific institution in the world. That's not to pass judgement on whether he ought to be, the fact remains that he is.

My instinct would be to go for one of the ones I grew up knowing and I'm at the age where they're dying off so... I donno if I'd be able to just because of that. I *assume* somebody would've told me... I mean my first thought was "my dad" and it's been nine years.

I wonder how many of those who *can't* name a scientist actually have a child who's a working scientist or in a PhD program, but doesn't consider them real scientists, just children who disappointed them by not going to med school.

Is Elon Musk a scientist? He dropped out after two year of engineering at Queens. I have two friends that were in his class.

I’d rather 100% of people be unable to name a living scientist than any percentage of people think “Elon Musk” is a valid answer

Yup, I lecture on a MSc level programme including a module on CRISPR and Innovative medicines and most of my students have never heard of her before that module

Hmm — Geoffrey Hinton not on the top ten, in spite of Nobel and mega exposure. But overall I guess the results are (depressingly) close to what I’d expect.

Weird thing to say dude. I mean, 2 of the 10 people listed are women, I don’t think we have to do much to imagine the result?

I’d rather live in a world where it’s 50%. Any advice on how we can raise the visibility of scientists in general, and women in STEM specifically? (The first name that came to my mind was a certain astrophysicist and author, and then after Dr. Smethurst I thought of you.)

Not saying condescending things like “sweet summer child” to them when you encounter them online would help

<-- Librarian in charge of collection development for the 500s (Math & Sciences) in a mid-sized suburban library. I'm one of those data point outliers that immediately gets thrown out of the survey. 😅

I find this worrying. No surprise that many think MAHA is great, that climate change is fake or not a worry, or that environmental degradation isn't an issue.

i want to joke and say "me" but i havent worked in research software in years now :( some day i'll find a position that pays enough to support a family, maybe, hopefully

I've just about given up on Human Beings. I'm getting on a bit so don't have put up with the idiocy for much longer.

I wonder how much of this is the glorification of past scientists so that they seem larger than life. Or Hollywood versions. People might not think of normal non famous scientists as scientists. I got an allergy shot today by a MD who coauthored the first paper about AIDS.

Nice to see my Pomona College classmate, Jennifer Doudna. Categorizing Elon Musk as a “scientist“ is a bit mystifying. He’s more of what the Brits would call “a presenter,” and has been for years.

What pillocks are answering Elon Musk?!?!??! That’s so incorrect it’s offensive. His BS is in economics, & he *maybe* has a BA in physics. Neither of which make him a scientist, especially considering he does no research or work in a scientific field.

I was racking my brain, totally drawing a blank, and then I thought, oh, wait me! I'm a scientist! And I know lots of scientists personally! They count too! They are still scientists, even if they haven't won Nobel prizes yet.

It's not necessarily that his fame grew. People's ability to name any other scientists may have atrophied. Given the general decline in science literacy - such as allowing for Musk to appear on the top ten list, or at all - it seems very very likely.
