Smoke signals in space 💨 The Fine Ring Nebula, shown here, looks like an almost perfect circular ring — yet most planetary nebulae are either spherical or elliptical in shape, or bipolar. Why this unusual shape? Find out: https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw1131a/ 🔭 #flashback

So much to say about Brazil, not least of which is the role that Erika Hilton, a Black trans leader and most voted woman politician in Brazil, played in mobilizing folks for Lula. She was behind the critical, concrete, economic promise of shorter work-week. theprint.in/feature/erik...

theprint.inWho is Erika Hilton? Black trans politician was one of Lula’s loudest campaignersErika Hilton’s electoral triumph comes amid a hostile environment. Brazil has the highest number of reported murders of transgender people in the world, with 80 recorded in 2025.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

i don't think it's that crazy it's a lot harder to use public money to build a complicated interconnected grid of rail infrastructure than it is to use private money to build a bunch of big warehouses. like i don't think it's great only one of those is possible but what i do not think it is is crazy

this is what a near-sunset view on pluto looks like. we sent a spacecraft billions of miles from earth and got to see a world we’d never explored up close before.

for shader nerds: there is neat anti-repetition tech here. it would be fun to mess with anti-repetition shaders like this. it's a neat set of tricks. i've only ever read about them. and part of me wonders if you could use a nonsquare basis. worey distance for blend, for instance...

Parking actually seems like it's bad for small business because unless one has the wherewithal to build a fuck ton of parking, potential business would be lost to rate of parking turnover

I don’t think the internet psychologically damaged us as a species. I think capitalists trying to control and monetize it did. I think we as a species created a web of speed a creativity. A breaking of walls that scared and enraged the wall builders.

it honestly sucks how everyone is expected to pretend they’re fine when asked how are you, even if your friend asks. apparently it is not cool to be honest

Telling trans people to calm down in re: anti-trans Democrats works the same way as a man calling a woman "hysterical" or "emotional." It frames any reaction the other person has as invalid, and guarantees that, if they weren't mad before, they sure are now. It doesn't work, and it's rude. Stop it.
