Things I enjoy in science fiction: * spaceships * artificial (or just somehow really different) intelligences * interesting social commentary Things I tend not to enjoy: * dark/gritty stuff (everyone is having a bad time & so am I) * sexism/bigotry/etc (this rules out a lot of "classic" sci-fi)

I have added a couple of lists of some of my favorite books (all science fiction) -- I highly recommend everything listed! bookshop.org/shop/astroka...

There are of course a lot of excellent books I have loved and haven't included here, mostly because I want to keep the list of a manageable length and a vaguely coherent genre. But these are a good starting point.

If you are wondering why my bookshop on Bookshop.org doesn't have a list of nonfiction books I recommend (say, especially good astrophysics books) it's because I rarely read nonfiction and basically never read popular books in my own field so I am useless for such recommendations 🙃

This is why I don't read a lot of pop science in my own field

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

It's so much work because as I read I am constantly 1) back-translating to the technical version of the topic and 2) evaluating the accuracy/effectiveness of the explanation which is just exhausting.

I voted! 🗳️ (absentee, online) Before I moved to Canada, I lived in Raleigh, NC. So as an overseas citizen voter, I'm a Wake County North Carolina voter forever (unless I move back to the States). If you're eligible to vote in the US midterms, I hope you voted too!

This 19th c lady’s multitool was found in the pocket(!) of an antique (1872) garment donated to the historic clothing archive at my employer. It features a button hook for fitted gloves and a tiny corkscrew. The corkscrew is too small for wine & was probably intended to open apothecary bottles.

I was out driving today and I had to stop kinda suddenly for a cyclist in front of me and I was rear-ended but the guy who hit me was also on a bike and just kinda bounced back a bit so we both waved sorry and everyone was okay and we all laughed about it.

On a related note, King Street in Kitchener should be closed to cars all the time, not just when there are street festivals; it makes no sense as a thoroughfare for anything but bikes and pedestrians.

It’s so weird how many of the scammy AI e-mails end with something like: “One word back is enough: ‘details.’” As though the major barrier keeping people from taking up their amazing offer is the need to choose and type multiple words. (I suspect it’s just to make the response filter easier.)

That is a quote from the latest one, trying to sell me some kind of AI-infused writing app. Humans just don’t talk like that. Or, if they do, they’re not humans I would want to know. Have companies decided people are cool with being pitched by robots now?

It sounds like hyperbole to suggest the current administration WANTS measles to become common again but I can’t think of much they’d be doing differently if they didn’t want that. (I think some of them really are eugenicists who legit prefer disease spread to prevention; others just don’t care)

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

The CDC denied a request from California, Hawaiʻi, Oregon, and Washington to validate a high-volume measles test, citing “other priorities.” 🤨

And of course, I appreciate that the galaxy images are from JWST, so the diffraction spikes also have a hexagonal symmetry. 😊

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

One of the many things I love about El-Sayed is that he's willing to engage with someone hostile if it gets them to admit the premises behind that hostility, to the extent that it becomes impossible to avoid the underlying bigotry. You want to go there, fine, but he's gonna make you own it.

This is Tommy. Tommy had a question about my allegiances. Listen to the end to hear about his.

We already have flying cars. They're called helicopters. They're really expensive and there are good reasons you have to have a pilot license and work with air traffic control to fly them. Putting jets on a sedan is not going to result in a better vehicle or transportation experience in any way.

Octopus is the easiest thing to cut out of your diet on moral grounds because it’s basically never around, probably has dreams and emotions and tastes like a tire.

This is why it's so important in your math classes to understand the difference between "if" and "iff." The comment below may be true as stated (if) but is obviously false as intended (iff).

Okay sorry I think we're done with "Tell me [] without telling me []." It had its time. It was always condescendingly smug but now it's also unbearably tedious; I think we can move on.

Yesterday I provided my immune system with the latest enemy intel and let me tell you it is working VERY hard on those cellular combat drills right now 🫠

And then you start thinking, “wait, is ALL illness like this?” And it mostly is! Most viruses/bacteria aren’t *themselves* causing you pain; your immune response is, in various ways. Your happiness and comfort are of zero priority to your immune system. All it wants is to kill the bug.

The “fun” part is when your immune system decides that it needs extra energy to do its job and obviously you can’t be trusted to LIE DOWN AND REST unless it MAKES you do that and it will 100% make you do that. It has the means and by god it will use them.

The weird/cool thing about vaccine side effects is how (for me at least) they vanish entirely within 36 hours. It FEELS like responding to a pathogen but it’s 100% immune system, 0% pathogen. So when the pathogen isn't actually there, my body can just be like "oh never mind" & turn the sickness off.
