You know how people are always like “if libraries didn’t already exist the idea of them would be inconceivable?” What are things we used to have that are like that? Like imagine a gov mandated, ISP funded, free to use YouTube like platform? Crazy, right? That’s: Public Access Cable. We had that!

send hugvibes to thousands of folks with flooded homes today in Bangkok took all day and wading through flood waters but i managed to get out and to the airport... where thousands are getting off planes to find a 6hr taxi wait, or take a train to a flooded station, so are just camping here.

in your next zoom interview have not only a cup of ice coffee but seven or eight different cups of various beverages just off camera and casually drink from each of them throughout the interview the drinks should have fancy straws or colorful parasols or large pieces of fruit on the edge of the cup

Every single part of the entire current digital media landscape was envisioned as part of what was called “blogs” at the start. Tweets, Instagram, reels, sharing your morning run with someone, knowing whether your crush had looked at your story, control over sharing to a community — all of it.

Blogs so didn't suck at scale that they, arguably and defensibly, ate the news environment and publishing. We are still living in the age of the blogger, present company included. To be clear. Your influencer/independent journo/networked politico etc etc -- blogging.

Back in the day, when you pressed a button on a remote control it changed channels instantly. Now, you gotta navigate a labyrinth of menus where each button press takes a second. It's a horrible user experience and everyone... just puts up with it?

Reminder: 1. You don't need to have an opinion on everything, especially stuff you don't know enough about 2. You don't need to have a PUBLIC opinion on everything 3. It's okay to focus on one or two things and let others take up the slack elsewhere 4. It's okay to take a break when overwhelmed.

i just like to repeat every now and then that we shouldn't be releasing election results until we have election results giving out partial vote tallies in whatever order they get counted is misinformation at best and it leads to a certain number of people stress-inducing a bad case of pundit brain

It's not untrue, but this feels like such a dystopian way to describe books: "curated, peer-reviewed, domain-specific human knowledge, structured in a way no web crawl can replicate. Dense, edited, authoritative.” www.404media.co/ai-companies...

Bowling Alone pins the start of the collapse in 1965. the era of third spaces in america is literally exiting living memory. no wonder people think it's mythological.

I ask as always: What were these mythical "third places that previous generations had available to them?" The whole idea of "third places" is just so much Camelot mythmaking.

A 5-4 Supreme Court just barely stopped a president from erasing the 14th Amendment by decree. We were one vote away from a very different country, and from upending countless lives in the process.

every single study done on this shows that the actual best behavior is done under consistent pseudonyms and people behave worse under real names it’s counterintuitive but at this point the real names thing is willful denial of evidence

There has been a fake BK show listed in Omaha, NE on StubHub. It was never happening but somehow they sold "tickets" at $1000+ a piece to several fans.

Listening to today's episode (excellent as usual) and they talk about accusations of things written by AI and name a tool I'd not heard of (Pangram). They claim it's pretty reliable. I feed it my piece from @liberalism.org this week that I *know* is human written because *I* wrote it...
