as i understand it, if one person thinks they deserve a higher wage, then that's just entrepreneurial spirit, someone on the track to leadership, but if several people think it, and work together, then that's protectionism

Well. Got laid off, position terminated this Saturday. I need some time to remake my resume and everything but if anyone is looking for a Front-End engineer with 12yrs of exp in the Bay Area/Remote U.S. Ping me.

the average bluesky discourse is stuff like "what? i should pay workers? that sounds like they're just rent seeking" as people drop words into sentences like they're materia in final fantasy

although i do try and hold a more nuanced view like "machine translation good, extractive corpus bad, duty of care missing" i simply do not have the time or energy or good faith to talk about the finer points, especially when it feels like people are simply carving out exceptions for themselves

maybe i'm simply a bitter smoker but i'm pretty sure people could be a lot meaner about ai, given the 'they want to kill everyone' stuff and i think most of you could simply get over it and enjoy your vices with a far quieter shame like the rest of us rather than acting like surly teens with a vape

i am sure someone two friends short of a podcast will call me a hater on substack but yeah it's hard to be enthusiastic about tools that put family and friends back in the ward, no matter how much time they've saved you at the paperclip factory

i am fully aware of the overwhelming power of brute force but i do think it's worth stepping back and taking a look at where the fist is aimed and who it is heading for rather than tell me about how firm and muscular the hand is and how many things you'd like to see punched for low low prices

still it's very beautiful to see someone outsource almost all their work, struggle with integrating it, and start writing blog posts about "knowledge that exists outside the codebase but within the organization" only to conclude that team work is dead because they'd rather talk to ai than coworkers

it's just pretty tiring to hear endless wish fulfilment scenarios "my job will be easier" or "science will get better" when every day it feels like the exact opposite is happening, what with endless crunch and layoffs, and i'm told "but it works on my machine" as if it means anything

ultimately i find myself siding with people who say things like "the companies destroying the web are bad and we should not be giving them money" over people who say things like "actually, my agent is the one with the spending problem, that's why we need limits" but i guess i'm a hater

i guess the closest i have to a glib position is "you shouldn't have to pay a defence contractor to use a computer" plus "subsidizing tools that enable widespread fraud is bad" plus "you should not be surprise if people are judgemental about software that has killed several people"

seeing posts about childhood pranks and flashing back to the time I set a welcome message on my mum's old brick of a phone, and every time she turned it on it said "LOW BATTERY" i found out later she'd charged it for a week. i then repeated the prank two weeks later and it only took her a few days

not a day goes by without some tooltip like dialog hovering over the page and somehow getting stuck and refusing to vanish still, not my favorite thing, which is when you find the exact perfect mouse position that a dialog pops in, and then pops back out over and over and over

i think my favourite thing about the modern web and react is that we've traded a bunch of sync/state bugs, like values not getting rendered, or seeing out of sync information, for bugs like components not getting rendered, or the back button not working and yet still texboxes love to lose your work

like, tooltips should be ridiculously easy, like, mouse is over element, show thing atop, mouse moves off thing, element vanishes until the mouse is at bottom of page and your tooltip is invisible, so you fix that and now the box isn't under the mouse when it appears so it vanishes, and, and,

sorry i need to publicly be a hater for a second but what do you mean the giant 230k+ signature save mass effect petition is only about the IP and not the devs that were laid off

ladies, is your programming - a field dominated by rich white men - driven by fashion trends - practiced as a demonstration of status - funded by vanity projects for failsons - filled with queers trying and failing to break even that's art, sorry

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

Hey, so, hate to say this, but it seems like your "PTSD" is affecting your piloting. And this kinda thing is not uncommon, but it could be up to a 37.5% decline. Yeah, those eggheads quantified it. Now can you chew on this gum? Great, this is gonna hurt as I activate the implant.

TEACHER: Here is your homework, ask your parents to give your three compliments CHILD: Nanny, please tell mother I have homework questions for her NANNY: I usually answer them, but I thought she might want to PA: ... and you have homework, too! CEO, frantically on phone: grok what is child

a lot of people have encountered the overconfident stem nerd, the guy who programs and so everything else must be easy from the outside it does look like "i'm smart at code, so therefore i can do anything", but i promise you that they're like this with code too

the thing about programming is the finding out is usually pretty disconnected from the fucking around, be it a dev/ops split, or user/developer, or even past/future, people do not get to experience the consequences of their choices and are not incentivised to imagine them either
