this is honestly invigorating—maybe because the US far right has been on the rise most of my life, maybe because it suggests why the far right being unpopular is not enough. mostly: because it gives us something we can do
Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different
did this for the first time last fall—I moved some of my perennial containers where I raked the leaves under a tree (not too close to the trunk), insulating them. not only did we get some forgotten bulbs popping up under in early spring, we had no aphids this year and lots more moths and fireflies.
your yearly PSA: want to do something positive wrt the ecosystem while saving yourself a bunch of time and effort? skip the bagging and just rake leaves into a pile wherever convenient (bonus points if you do it under a tree). www.nps.gov/articles/000...

just realized that i could potentially be the first person to post this classic SW galaxy-brain take on here, which brings me great joy.
genuinely I’m struggling with this—is the impunity all around us a break with the rule of law, or is it compatible with the rule of law because—well, there they go with more impunity and here we are. is the law capable of correcting that? what would be?
The generality principle of the Rule of Law is its most essential concept. A class of people outside criminal law is incompatible with a law-based society.

ICYMI, LA Taco has parted ways with two of its most fearless ICE reporters, Memo Torres and Izzy Ramirez (@eltragon.bsky.social and @izzymirez.bsky.social on here). Neither says why, but it sounds like it was sudden and involuntary.

BREAKING: SCOTUS rejects Trump admin's request to allow it to end gender-affirming medical care in prisons — a significant, if tentative, rejection of one of the admin's most extreme anti-trans arguments. Only Thomas and Alito noted they would have granted the stay. More to come: www.lawdork.com
policing is a jobs (and retirement) program for men who abuse women
New: We found cops who kept using Flock to spy on women after they left the force. One used it for five years after retirement, tracking his wife during a custody battle. Another ran searches while he was suspended (and later fired) after killing a 15-year-old boy. Free to read: wapo.st/3UEwWU7

The spectre they're trying to manufacture is that the evil trans menace is going to steal your children in the night - which is rich given Ken Paxton really, actually did attempt to remove trans youth from their parent's custody
Pamphlets purporting to come from a transgender rights organization — mailed to families across Texas and igniting criticism from conservatives — came from a company formed last month in Wyoming. The Texas Transgender Student Union listed a Houston-area post office box as the address on the mailers.
The dept. claimed the vehicle helped “locate foster children who have been victims of sex trafficking… Lawmakers questioned why nearly $1 million was spent on mobile surveillance while foster children face shortages in trauma therapy, caseworker support and basic transportation for family visits.”

If anything, install the RECAP plugin so that anything you pay to look at on PACER, it can be the last time anybody has to pay for it. I've relied so much on the RECAP archive and have in turn contributed many, many dockets to the cause 20-40 cents at a time.
When we started in 2010, funders turned us down. They said publishing every court record would be impossible. Today, our databases are some of the largest in the world and used millions of times daily. Help us fund the next chapter of equitable, accessible courts. donate.free.law/forms/suppor...
How many people will read past the mentions of arrests and charges up top, to read about what followed? (In one case, a plea; in the other, the case remains open.) If the writers had to remove every claim about Belgal attributed solely to prosecutors, what would this story read like?

“Meta named one of the roads leading to the data center ‘Move Fast Way,’ borrowing from the early motto from Facebook, before it became the larger Meta, ‘Move fast and break things.’ Breaking things are what the Morrises and their co-plaintiffs said the company did, and they want answers.”
