Make it shitty!

For our new readers: A Day in the Life of an Ensh*ttificator Norwegian Consumer Council #Digital #products and #services keep getting worse. In the new report Breaking Free: Pathways to a fair technological future, Norwegian Consumer Council has delved into #enshittification & how to resist it.

The BBC has no ads and is funded by the licence fee. ITV has ads and is free to view, funded by advertising, but you can pay not to see ads. Sky and others, have subscribers paying for the service and yet have adverts which no one wants, how long before they go “ad free” for an additional fee?

They also have a commercial arm (BBC Studios) that covers the “Uktv” channels, and they all carry adverts. Which is why some shows (including historical BBC content) are on the U streaming service instead of iPlayer, so they can make more money off them.

Not knocking the Beeb for that. What is clear is that adverts are obviously seen as an irritant to be avoided by paying more money, whilst paid subscription services have it both ways. Greed.

Wait, is this only in the UK? The article specifically mentions that an email was sent to UK customers, nothing I saw explicitly said this applied to anyone else, but I absolutely could have missed something.

We made a spreadsheet schedule and put them on rotations to cancel and resign up. Cut our streaming bill by 60% and within a year we've seen the best of what's new on 7 services. Even though we only have 3 of the services at once my wife never runs out of stuff to watch.

I'm sure they need the money to pay their park employees a living wage and ensure their overseas merch labor force gets fair compensation and safe working conditions lol just kiddingggggg

Buying only tangible media from now on, even if it resigns me to older content, so I can still watch them on a DVD player powered by a manual stationary bicycle and a potato battery.

Subscription services are jacking up prices, offering less, and doing what they can to ruin your ability to enjoy entertainment. I haven't done the dirty Disney subscription yet and this is one more reason not to.

To ‘clarify’, that's what they call it when they're caught violating their own terms of service and realize that they need to change their terms of service.

Microsoft will be peddling ads soon in their games. They will probably sell it as an ad supported game pass tier but one the tech exists it wont be long before it appears in the other tiers too. Its the same playbook - abuse consumers for as much as possible.

And Disney is only existing as a streaming service, IMO, because of the Hulu-Disney merger. They were tanking beforehand. Isn't it great how when a business with money runs a crap service, they can just bail themselves out of it by merging and buying a service that people won't easily walk away from

"Not true! They can't reach our dreams. Until they figure out how to get the ads into our heads just as this syringe gets liquid into this egg. *rupture* Anyway, it will all be done with harmless gamma radiation." -- Prof. Farnsworth

I went to cancel my subscription and they reduced my rate by 30% for the next 3 months, explicitly for “Ad Free” service. So, I don’t know what you’re talking about.

I remember when we went to the movies and bought dvd’s and blue rays. Now we instead of buying it once we by it over and over again monthly by streaming! Maybe it’s time to disconnect!

When I was a behavioral scientist at Disney I interacted with the Consumer Insights team, who surveyed the public on new products. What really impressed me about them was whatever the C-suite wanted to do, this team could always prove the fans were just begging for it. "Please Disney! More ads!"

To encourage subscription to higher tiers, 1 in 1000 lower tier subscribers agree to have their homes burned by Disney employees dressed as Mickey, Chewing and Olaf.

You *were* mentioned in the earnings call....

Perhaps the higher tier(s) will only do what HBO Max does: 1 ad for an HBO project before the thing you're watching. Disney+ is already doing that, and I don't mind it. (There IS a skip button.) Anything beyond THAT tho'...is basically inviting people to embrace pirating.

I was literally getting ready to re-subscribe to the Disney/Hulu package for Vision Quest and to rewatch stuff for Doomsday. Now...I'm not so sure about that purchase, matey. (In case that was too subtle: Puts on eyepatch and goes "Arrrrrrr...")

I just chatted with Disney. The ads in Premium only affects "select live and linear programming." I asked what linear programming is and was told "Linear programming in streaming refers to scheduled television channels or continuous video streams ...

... that broadcast content in a set order—just like traditional cable TV—rather than letting you pick and watch things on-demand" The rep also said "You will only encounter ads on your Premium plan if you deliberately click on specific live streams or continuous channels within the apps."

So there still won't be ads in any on-demand movies/TV shows. I not thrilled about the ad creep, but at least for now it won't be infesting everything.

What’s really bizarre and especially annoying is that they don’t even make money from the ads, or certainly not the bulk of it. Their profits have always come from the subscription fees. Network has to pay for their programming with ads, cable can’t possibly.

of course businesses are trying to maximize revenue. the lack of balancing forces skew things. in nearly every industry, consolidation is crushing the consumer. government leverage to break that is vital. we won't boycott our way out. this is the point of regulations in a viable marketplace. ⚖️🤹

i remember a time when everything was on basically one streaming service. no ads. just a $12/month fee for all the convenience in the world. but now... well. i'm back to my old ways.

I never pirated, and then all these billionaires decided to suck the joy from life. So I canceled them all and started my life at sea.

Ugh. Tell me about it. A user wouldn't even need access to that certain Bay or that 1337 site we all know about. It couldn't be easier now! All it takes is installing an add-on. Such a damn shame.

And their ads sucked. They were never, ever for anything I could even imagine buying; mostly luxury cars. Even when I paid attention out of a feeling of obligation, there was never any real benefit involved for either party.

We had it free for a year, renewing in December. Can’t see a reason to keep something that will have increasing endless advertising breaks.

If everyone cancelled their subs (even if they didn't intend to stick to it) and cited this and the price hikes as reasons, it would be changed before the end of the week.

I don't want Disney. I've never wanted Disney. But I have to pay for Disney because I want Hulu without ads. The only way they will sell it to me is if I pay for Disney too. It's absolutely ridiculous.

love to pay an extra 10 bucks (on top of my own monthly fee) so my friends or family can catch up on the same shows, then all of us *Still* having to regularly reauth when we spend the night at eachother's places from home, visit second locations, or just seemingly at random

oh also super love that I can't watch any of it at all in some cases when I visit Canada or Mexico plus being shut out of luck if broadband is dicey definitely doesn't scream "just pay their stupid fee for a single account, then still pirate that same content bc more convenient" in my ear 🙃

Is it possible that they're going to start showing some live sporting events where there's breaks in the action anyway so that's what they're talking about... I'm just looking for a reason to not be mad.

Got an annual subscription that runs until January, will not renew. No reason to pay premium prices if I’m going to see ads anyway. 🤷‍♀️

They've always had this mindset. Remember all the promotional crap you had to fast-forward through to get to the main feature on a VHS tape? "And Now For Our Featured Presentation..."
