Call it anecdotal, but my Canadian friends who are cancelling their US travel are not doing it because of tariff worries at all; they’re doing it because the US government is currently actively threatening Canada’s sovereignty and economy and they’re all justifiably furious

Oh The Urbanity!@ohtheurbanity.bsky.social

This is exactly why Canadians are fed up with US media. A segment on Canadians cancelling Vermont vacations. Mentions tariffs but not (1) who started the trade war or (2) that the US is constantly threatening to ANNEX our country! This isn’t MAGA. It’s not FOX. It’s a random NBC affiliate.

Psychological safety is NOT about lack of disagreement. Psychological safety REQUIRES: * disagreement and debate * setting standards for behavior and performance, and enforcing them * telling people things they don't want to hear * courage, from the bottom up * humility, from the top down

Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House. We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication. They own what happens next.

Remember: Wealth can’t be separated from power. Power begets wealth and wealth begets power. We're seeing in real time how the extreme concentration of wealth is distorting our politics, rigging our markets, and granting unprecedented power to a handful of billionaires.

A typical human story. Acceptance of abuse invites more abuse, even if retaliation can be costly. People are warier of people who hit back.

Two Republican senators told me tonight this vote shows they can execute the same strategy again — cut Democrats out of the negotiations on a gov’t funding bill, pass it thru the House, and expect Senate Dems to back down and not filibuster it. “We liked it over here,” one said.

This elderly man showed up to support an anti-trans bill in my home state and then, because he had to wait hours to testify, he was stuck listening to queer folks rally against it By the time it was his turn to speak, he'd changed his mind Never doubt that speaking out can change hearts and minds

The fight going on in the Democratic Party right now is not between hard left, left and moderate. It’s between those who want to fight and those who want to cave. And Team Fight stretches across all ideological aspects of the Party. Misread this at your own peril.

It feels like the argument inside of the Democratic establishment is heating up. I hope that's a good thing. I hope there's a faction that understands the fight in front of them and wants to be more proactive. And I hope they're winning against Schumer's milquetoast business as usual.

Extraordinary moment — Nancy Pelosi issues a statement calling on Democratic senators to reject the House funding bill, i.e. to defy Chuck Schumer. "Democratic senators should listen to the women," she says, referring to Murray/DeLauro who want a 1-month stopgap bill instead.

The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents 800,000+ federal and D.C. workers (i.e. people directly impacted by a government shutdown), is urging senators to vote no on the House GOP's CR. In other words, AFGE is saying a government shutdown is less bad than this GOP bill.

I read this book called “Let Them”. It’s super popular a en has sold lots of copies. The problem is that it is full of feel good mono with no substance. When you “let them”, you get the situation the United States is currently facing.

/4 Yglesias’ view is that slogans like “states’ rights” and “welfare queens” and “anchor babies” are all just preexisting sincere concerns of the American electorate that emerged unprompted from the people. That’s deeply credulous.

/3 The idea that the American people were a simmering cauldron of anxiety about trans issues and the GOP just finally acknowledged it is ridiculous. The trans panic is as cynical, bad-faith, and artificial as the “people eating dogs” panic. “Moderating” to their framing is capitulation to evil.

/2 Today the demand for “moderation” calls on people to accept the Right’s hysterical bad faith framing of trans issues in a way that demeans humans and reduces liberty. If you do that their next demand will be that you abandon some other group or value.

detiber reposted

Put another way: I’ve never had the sense that Yglesias has any actual values, just strategies. “Moderating” is a questionable strategy when you have no control over what “moderate” means and you’re just reacting to bad-faith fascists who will demand that you abandon value after value.

Popehat@kenwhite.bsky.social

Yglesias looks at Columbia and says “well appeasement clearly works.” Yglesias also utterly lacks the insight to understand that the Right currently defines what “moderate stances” means and is dragging it inexorably into fascism with his assistance.

My piece on crappy headlines and scaremongering about ADHD, PIP and disability support more widely is in today’s app edition of @the-independent.com - and how our society distrusts difference and thinks all disabled people should be angelically suffering rather than living their lives.

Bat Krown 🦇🎃@katbrownwrites.com

By me for @the-independent.com. Whether it's ADHD, autism, benefits or PIP, the way we disparage what we don't understand reflects both on our own fear and lack of literacy – and the irresponsible way we stigmatise disabled members of our society www.independent.co.uk/voices/adhd-...

The word "entitled" has so many of y'all confused. There's a difference between: "She is entitled" And "She feels entitled" The implication of feeling entitled, is often that you are not entitled. If you've paid into social security your whole career, you *are* entitled to benefits.

Ok but I can't emphasize this enough: Peanut Corporation of America was a family-owned company. No shareholders, no stock market, no private equity sharks. The guy who killed all those people w shit sprinkles in his peanut butter? The same exact dude who started it as a small business in 1977.

I mean, it makes more sense when you consider the vast majority of vc-backed, public, and private equity owned companies are under constant pressure to solve for maximizing profit and externalizing liability in the short term
