I was so excited to celebrate It's Not a Bloody Trend's birthday this morning, only to discover that it was actually...yesterday. Anyway, my book on (you'll be shocked to hear) ADHD is one today!

After much research I have perfected the theory of "AI as the One Ring". All AI techbros consistently fall under: - Knows it's bad, thinks they're just built different - Thinks it's inevitable and switches sides w/ no morals - Thinks it's his magic girlfriend - Evil CEO ruling over the rest of them

Wonder if there's something to look into here with the NYU of it all. His gigantic son goes to that school, which doesn't make much sense, considering what NYU is and what he is. Why?

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

All the way there I was going, "They will think I broke it myself and am lying about it! But I have my purchase history, and my receipt, and picture of the old product, and a note of endorsement" etc etc. Anyway, turned out to be an issue with the pipette and they changed it in five mins.

Rowling *never* writes about women’s rights, workplace discrimination or the threats to women from predatory men. I tracked her posts for five months: Well over 200 hateful transphobic smears. Not a single post about women’s actual concerns or needs None

I keep clicking into this thread and its quote posts and it’s like having your face licked by a labrador comprised entirely of good news.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

found out that my mother in law decided she was aggressively pro trans rights literally by going, I don't know anything about this but everyone who is against trans rights is also against free school lunch, the issue I know and care a lot about, so this must be the correct way to feel about this

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Is there any sweeter sound than the begrudging “I stand corrected” of an IRL reply guy who has just told you you have no Hemingway in stock and is then shown a whole shelf of Hemingway

This is absolutely like how I keep being referred to as an “ADHD activist,” except unlike trans people, I can still access healthcare and without the creator of Harry Potter getting involved.

Mark Grimshaw@markgrimshawtism.bsky.social

A reminder that the “trans lobby” is just trans people going about their lives, and the “fight” being referred to is JK Rowling using her money, power and influence to endorse policy that is killing trans people. I’m amazed she could move to type a new essay with the layers of blood on her hands.

Disabled people and trans people were also part of the Nazis’ eugenics (up til 1933, trans healthcare and rights were well advanced in Germany.) Where one group is deemed “lesser”, it empowers the lessening of more. It happened so recently we are refusing to see it happening again across the world.

Parents, please check your kids’ candy this Halloween. I’ve just found an ancient metal whistle with the inscription “QUIS EST ISTE QUI VENIT" inside a Snickers bar. I blew it and heard a note of infinite distance, and now I’m haunted by a figure in pale, fluttering draperies. Be safe.

This is honestly such bollocks. They are two distinct forms. There is so much bureaucracy and unnecessary seat filling elsewhere in the corporation - getting rid of the people actually creating the programming is totally stupid (see also the annihilation of work for TV freelancers in recent years)

The risk here is that Radio Comedy - a distinct art in its own right with its own discipline and method - is relegated to another layer of television's development substrata.

Brits, please sign the petition to save BBC Radio 4 Extra. It costs tuppence ha'penny to run, is of national and cultural importance, and if the Beeb needs to save money, how about cutting down the endless layers of management? you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/sa...

you.38degrees.org.ukSave Radio 4 ExtraRadio 4 Extra is a fabulous showcase of the BBC's phenomenal archive of radio comedy and drama, fields in which the Corporation is an undoubted pioneer, with a reputation for quality rivals woud envy ...

I am in a local cat chat group from trying to find out who owns Captain Beefcheeks (Genevieve’s suitor from across the rooftop). Much of it is “does anyone know this cat?” and a perfectly fine looking cat stares out at you. Although last night a stray was fostered so 10/10 for the cat chat group!

Alison says it all. Radio 4 Extra wasn’t an apocryphal service for superannuated listeners. It was a cultural resource and a reminder of a braver, expertly curated BBC.

Alison@alisondennison.bsky.social

I'll miss Radio 4extra. I don't think its listeners will transfer to seeking the same stuff out on BBC Sounds. That's not how it works. The station introduces listeners to stuff. And I'm using the plural because individual algorithms are a lonely replacement. I don't want to be a listener (singular)

What a totally brilliant few days of #TheArchers. Really compelling, nail biting stuff, and everything character led - including poor Elizabeth wondering if she’s going to lose another partner to a roof in a storm. Such great writing and acting all round, what a joy!

If you want to see an INCREDIBLY left wing film that stands for everything that Trump and Farage hate, and is also totally brilliant and has the most beautiful autumn scenes since Frozen 2, can I recommend you book #Wildwood asap?

The battle scenes are realistic and consequences of actions are everywhere. This is also, astonishingly, a stop motion film, and the end of the credits takes you enchantingly through a brief run of how each moment was made and moved by hand. I would watch a whole doc on this.

There is a lot of grief and unmanaged trauma here - Princess Mononoke for kids with “dads who collect figurines” as is wonderfully mentioned in passing. It’s a lot and it’s enchanting. Go to Wildwood and leave as exhilarated as that group of bold kids. www.empireonline.com/movies/revie...

It is genuinely shoulder-dropping to see a piece of culture made without fear of the current White House administration and their desire to pave paradise and put up a - well, another golf course and a ballroom. This is a magical film about nature and what is worth fighting for, often literally.

I asked a group of exhilarated children if they thought it was too scary for my 8yo niece. “I’m 8, and I didn’t think it was scary!” said one. “Hmmm,” said her dad. (I think will swerve for the niece til she’s older but plucky children and lovers of Narnia, Tolkien, Robin Hood etc will adore.)

Yeah I also think the anthropomorphising of it has fed into the negatives (of which there are many, especially environmental). It should be a *tool*, like spellcheck, like Excel or a calculator or even photoshop, something which enhances not takes over and makes you think you’ve got a friend.

There is a real piece of work that needs to be done on AI. Now, “AI” largely stands for gen-AI and the ethical ghoulishness that should rightly be stamped down on. But there is also pattern recognition, transcription tools, spellcheck and stuff that’s long been helpful, just without tech bro spin.
