What cloud provider would I build on today? For serious stuff, AWS -- not because it's best, but because knowing how a system breaks is worth more than knowing how it works. Principle of least surprise. duckbillhq.com

FUCK. YES.

AWS IAM now provides higher maximum quotas for roles, role trust policies, instance profiles, managed policies, and identity providers AWS doubled IAM limits because you've created such a Lovecraftian nightmare of permissions that even their original quotas couldn't contain it.

As someone who’s both American and European neither my brain nor my electrical appliances work properly.

SwiftOnSecurity@swiftonsecurity.com

Did you know Europe runs their electrical grid at 16% less Hz than America? Unfortunately, these electrical fields are picked up by the sympathetic nervous system – and means Europeans are cognitively 16% slower than America.

The worst AWS service isn't public. It's Isengard -- the internal tool that means Amazon's engineers never have to manage AWS the way customers do. If they had to live that pain, it'd get fixed. Open source it or stop using it. duckbillhq.com

The buy it now price is way too high, but their bid might get lucky.

Built an agentic EA to handle vendor pitch emails. Technically professional. HR couldn't fire someone for these responses but they'd be having some very uncomfortable conversations. Never felt more alive.

If your website has a chatbot because your website isn't doing its job, that's a website problem. AI support works when it routes to a human fast. Most deployments are a gauntlet instead. duckbillhq.com

Americans lost less than a 100th of a percent of Amazon’s market cap to scams last year.

Vercel: $10B company, built entirely on AWS, 20-30% markup. Hyperscalers are becoming power grids. Everything depends on them but that's not where the interesting stuff is. Unlike PG&E, AWS still wants credit for what its customers build. duckbillhq.com

I bet it went super well since they’re releasing this on Friday evening.

The thing that frustrates me most about cloud isn't the pricing. It's that we've forgotten how hard this is. Easy became the assumption. That assumption is where expensive surprises live. duckbillhq.com

"Cloud is too expensive, let's build a data center." If your engineering team hears this and doesn't immediately look ill, they haven't done this before. An AZ is a data center. You're not simplifying. duckbillhq.com

I gotta say. @quinnypig.com ‘s last week in AWS newsletter is still years later one of my most useful subscriptions I mean, it gave me me another “possible failure that can keep me up at night” story today but I still would rather know.

Nice one and gives you proper FS interface - they didn't slap some half solution on top of S3 and it's actually syncing S3 <-> NFS and both work as expected. Also read on costs, especially if you access a lot of small files. More on the topic by @quinnypig.com : www.lastweekinaws.com/blog/s3-is-n...

I guess it was inevitable - S3 is a filesystem now. It has full NFS compatibility, and uses an actual EFS storage layer for active files. Does this finally settle the question “is it a file or is it an object”? aws-news.com/article/2026...
