There’s a viral theory called "Shrekking" that beautiful college women are “dating down,” but they don’t quite see it that way. “I would rather be with someone who treats me well but isn’t as good looking than have someone who doesn’t treat me well but has good looks.”

What’s “attractive” can have as much to do with personality and character as it can physical appearance. I love it when people can see the beauty within. Because as they say, physical beauty is only skin deep. Character matters.

as a pansexual man, I've always found super jacked dudes to be a niche attraction, with chubby dad build guys to be the holy grail of hotness. I kinda suspect this is also a common taste among women, despite what looksmaxxer straight dudes seem to think

My ex-wife made a similar choice in college. When she hit her 30s and the testosterone:estrogen ratio started to increase (as it does in most women of that age), she realized that her desires were just as shallow as those of any 20-year-old male. She dumped me for a taller guy. Two of 'em, in fact.

College also doesn't last forever. The ravages of time make maintaining youthful, conventionally attractive looks a lot more difficult than a kind, caring, gentle, loving personality. Nobody wants to be stuck with a hateful potato.

Any time men talk about looks as a factor when it comes to women dating them I just scratch my head. Like, they're all shrek? If you want someone pretty you find a girl, good-looking isn't part of the package when you're trying to date a dude.

More than anything I am attracted to a warm smile and kind eyes. Gender independent. Weight independent. If somebody's whole face lights up when they smile, and they give that smile readily, chances are good I'll think they're attractive

Lmao yeah no shit, why would you be with someone who treats you like shit when you can be with someone that doesn't? This is not a new concept or a trend; y'all are dumb AF.

I feel like this is actually pretty normal and not a new trend at all, please playboy magazine, just because there's a catchy name for it doesn't mean it's a trend, it's just an established reality that women's taste in men is more varied and complex than men give them credit for.

When I first read “shrekking,” I thought it was some new weird sex thing. Then again, who says it isn’t, I guess. Someone out there will have a go at it. Ha! Literally & figuratively. 😂

Wow, so the message to men is "Don't be a jerk, treat women with respect and kindness, and you'll have more success in your relationships. Physical appearance isn't everything." Revelatory. Who would have guessed?

Well, that's not really true, is it? Many women go to college to meet an husband, white women I'm assuming, and they'll pick the wealthiest one There is nothing wrong with that Obviously, it's not all women Strangely, both side are fighting for their own vision of the "monolithic women" group

So people care more about looks than personality, values, ethics and politics? No wonder there are so many divorces.

"We can't say the entire premise of inceldom was a lie without upsetting the wrong people, so when confronted with the actual reality of straight women's dating preferences, we'll pretend it's some weird new trend"

Incels/Misogynists assume that women are completely shallow and only want looks and money because they are self-pitying. They can't change either and it justifies their hate. If women like a man because of his personality then that means the problem is them.

did you have to shop through counselors to quote to find one who would give you a 1950s line about women being attracted to responsible men because they “want to be taken care of” rather than the much more obvious and accurate “do not want to parent an adult child just bc he’s hot”??

All of this is male-coded. "Settling", "dating down" "six/ten", blah blah shallow crap. Is looks really the only thing men [whose opinions get broadcast] can think about? Like, really just nothing going on under the surface there?

If you want to help your readers be more successful in romance, this misogynistic framing is not the way. That aside, I lived by & taught my daughters that you don’t want to set your sights on a guy you need to chase. Find one who thinks you are & treats you like an absolute queen.

Their benchmark for boyfriends was our neighbor’s post-divorce boyfriend who spent every day of Covid lockdown at her house mowing, painting, and basically treating her like a queen. They spent whole afternoons watching this average-looking middle-aged guy push the mower around our neighbor’s yard.

Maybe stop using the terms that men use to describe what women are doing, saying, thinking... and report information like normal human beings : women prefer men who treat them well.

Yes, and it was rightfully called out for this shit in the past. It's doing it again - with a new coat of millenial/zoomer internet-poisoned misogyny - so it's getting called out again

As I have already replied to 2 other people, there's a difference between mainstream sexism (which is also wrong), and asking women if they are doing that thing that incels say they are doing.

I’m sorry, but I can’t get over the premise of the reporting. “Hello dear, do you know what shrekking is, and are you doing it?” Why would you even give the slightest credence to these kinds of propagandist terms dredged from the cesspools that are the radical masculinist milieus?

This feels like a social media bait weaponizing curiosity. I'll type "shrekking" into TikTok, which will show me the precise keyword shorts of random niche creators and in turn not only skew my algorithm but boost the search key word for everyone else, thus proliferating the content. I hate it.

I'm pretty sure that any woman I know who would use "Shrek" as a verb would mean moving to a swamp, getting fat, and yelling at your neighbors.

"Women" don't "do this", and "women" don't "do that" There is no such thing as a "woman", except if you define it as chromosomes or gender identity, but the shape of your genitals don't make decisions for other people that have the same shape Each individual is unique, they make their own decision

Considering the epidemic of gender-based violence, I’m all out of sympathy for men - young or old - who can’t get their shit together. >Himpathy / herasure. Look it up.

Well: it’s a Playboy article. We can’t expect it to be sophisticated enough to treat women as beings with thoughts and feelings.

I can understand it. There's a strong and persistent cultural trope of women preferring attractive assholes over nice guys who aren't as attractive (not getting into the related Nice Guy phenomenon, cause the trope is causally prior I think) 1/2

If that's your pre-loaded by society frame of the world, the human mind will tend to up-weight evidence that confirms it and down-weight evidence that doesn't And some women do fit that mold. So they take that as confirmation, despite more women not fitting that mold 2/2

Who the fuck gives a shit about this nonsense. Straight ppl make themselves miserable and then take it out on the rest of us, istg.

Curious. My ex said I was the most attractive of the men she’s been with, and yet she also timed her breakup with me to coincide with choosing to pursue someone who sucks in how he treats her, and is also less intelligent than she is. There’s rarely any logic in who we select to be interested in.

People are like "women don't care about wealth" and "women don't care about looks" Which I doubt very much, especially in the US The US is literally sucking North Korea's cock because people wanted to cheat the IRS, many white women voted for this, I'm not sure if it was a majority but it was

This is a great example of how many men, especially conservatives, expect women to only care about looks, because that’s how they behave. They can’t imagine that women have thoughts, wants, and internal lives of their own. That empathy might be more important than a 1-10 looks rating.

Idiot boys who have no idea how to talk to or impress girls is an eternal phenomenon. The novelty of the manosphere is that it's made a business out of teaching boys that they're never doing anything wrong, and any inclination to reflect on their behavior or seek advice outside the bubble is weak.

Well the message from many people here is "fuck you men" Obviously, it's a psyop by the Zionists/Centrists to make sure men don't vote Democrats so that the perpetual 2 party system continues Which, really, is only 1 party

Why does this generation always think everything is a new trend that has never happened before in the entire history of humanity? There’s been plenty of pop psychology about this in recent decades. Looks (a man’s looks) are not typically the top priority for most women; other traits are.

At the risk of attracting trolls, it seems the Manosphere's belief that a fit body, lots of money and quietly aggressive abuse attracts women is being proven false. Naturally, they find women are doing something they don't expect. "But all the guys at my gym say I'm hot!" Yes! Yes, they do.

wait, so the secret to getting women isn't to smash my bones with hammers until i have the perfect jawline? this is a shocking revelation.

The comments in here are proving a lot why women will go for men who are kind and secure regardless of their looks. You're all fucking bitter, entitled and nobody wants that. That's why you're ugly.

Men who hate women resent that their masculinity, in the eyes of the other men they seek acceptance from, is contingent on owning a woman those men would covet. They project this contempt and resentment onto women. The idea of "dating down" for the sake of the relationship itself is unfathomable.
