Stupid goo goo nonsense. The only way to get fair districting is to pinch republicans in the mouth enough until they agree to fairness. Doing this with Callais days away from ripping up the VRA is so stupid I don’t know where to begin.

no actually, “we gerrymander as revenge for their gerrymander” is the bad stuff. if you can’t win with a level playing field, tilting the field is not a long- or even medium-term solution (and nationalizing state politics is also bad)

You cannot change bad laws if you are not in power. And it becomes near-impossible to be in power if the other side gerrymanders while you are not. It's not the game we would like to play, but it is the game the GOP has made us have to play, if we ever want things to get better.

Cool. Who controls the House? Which party? Do the fairly-elected Michigan Democrats have any power in this Congress? Michigan Democrats (voters) are denied the ability to legislate, conduct oversight, etc, bc Republicans in my state, NC, & others, have gerrymandered themselves into a majority.

I (truly!) have the utmost respect for her. We modeled our campaign down here in Ohio on hers. And then they fucked us with the ballot language. Congressional gerrymandering can only really be dealt with federally. (California explicitly linked their retaliation with a call for federal reform.)

Unless your wife and her coworker plan on doing the same in Texas, North Carolina, etc that has no bearing on the current national redistricting movement kicked off by MAGA

Where's your proposed district map? Oh you don't have one. What's your mathematical thesis for drawing any map in any location at any point in time which is proven to avoid cherry-picking? Oh you don't have one. What is your method of redress for GOP gerrymanders? Oh you don't have one.

The most pathetic part is that you'll learn nothing from this humiliatingly stupid analysis getting ratioed to oblivion. You'll just cry about how mean Bluesky is or some shit. I hope you have the honor and dignity to prove me wrong but I'm definitely not holding my breath.

Being a “centrist” is not intrinsically good. Believing it is is incredibly naive & makes you an easy target to be controlled. It’s pretty simple. The more extreme one side becomes, the more “centrists” are ceding ground in that direction. This is how fascism etc happend & is accepted.

Normally I agree with your takes but you are completely off the mark here. Just utterly devoid of reality. Of course the end goal is to do away with gerrymandering. How do we accomplish that goal when the other guy refuses to go along and continues to tilt it in their favor?

1) we have to be in power to make changes. This is part of making elections, that are currently unfair in Republicans favor, fair. 2) many in the GOP and their supporters feel a deep sense of unfairness today. Welcome to our world. Step one is acknowledging the problem exists.

Dems have been trying to ban this practice for decades. Now that the GOP is getting a taste of their own medicine maybe a few more of them will be willing to listen/work towards ending the practice after today. Takes two to tango

Should Virginia still be allocating its electoral votes by congressional district as intended by the founders, even though other states defected in 1828 and went to winner-take-all to gain outsized influence?

I usually feel this way but I think it works when the gerrymanders are *explicitly* linked to the other side's gerrymanders; then you're actually nullifying their advantage & giving incentive to stop. This referendum apparently allows an early redistricting but only if another state does it first.

This is the definition of a luxury opinion, your life is comfortable enough that the outcome of any particular election isn’t really going to make or break your livelihood. The rest of us down here with the regular people have to live with the consequences of elections. Winning is not optional.

And no, maybe you are just as vulnerable as me or anyone else, but you’ve adopted the belief system of comfortable rich people. If you’re not actually one of them, that’s sadder, because you consistently advocate against your own interests for the aesthetic appearance.

do any of us need to? you're the one saying stupid shit on main. what more do we need to know? what critical backstory would justify this kind of inane response?

We had a solution but it was struck down by the court. We can either live in the world that exists with the supreme court that exists, or you can give up. It's not revenge to counter a gerrymander any more than the 14th amendment was revenge for the civil war.

Yes. The GOP is the most extreme major party in the world, they are a fascist, racist and traitorous cult of personality to a madman. The country can not move forward in any way until they at least suffer such a huge loss that they are forced to change.

you know that that’s what the right wing is currently trying to do to everyone they don’t like, and we think it’s bad? you know that, right?

NC GOP straight up ignored state court orders to draw new maps and then captured the courts in a following election. They stripped our governor of powers like the veto. There is no "un-tilting " this state within its own borders without a state constitutional crisis.

I don’t understand this conditional: The antecedent is not satisfied bc there is currently not a level playing field. So what do you do going forward? (Furthermore, a key problem in gerrymandering is that there isn’t a great answer to “what is a level playing field”)

“well the field is tilted now, that’s just a fact at this point. best we can do is try to stop it from tilting any further.” actually you can untilt it? and then it would be level again?

I used to believe this, to take the high road. I’ve decided that is naive and rather Dems have a moral imperative to gerrymander so hard it forces the Supreme Court or congress to make a national standard for districting.

It's honestly wild to see a sports writer who can't see the value of an enforcer. VA and CA are acting right now as enforcers, not only for their own voters, but for voters in red states across America who've been silenced and shut out of democracy.

If the nfl said that holding is now legal (the Supreme Court did this for partisan gerrymandering) what would you say about a team that said “well, we won’t do that because we’d rather be principled and stick to the game as we think it should be played, but our opponents are welcome to do that”?

I guess it was just really obvious to like seven other people that the playing field was not level, then? If several people are pointing out something you said was blatantly not based in reality, maybe look inward? Idk what else to tell you

Nope. The only thing that matters right now is getting the GOP out of power at every level. They are unfit to govern and dangerous. Now is not the time for purity contests.

it's not revenge. Civil society is a bargain: you play by the rules, and I will play by the rules. If they break the rules and you continue playing by the rules, then that agreement fails because you've removed its enforcement mechanism. This isnt personal or emotional: it's thermodynamic.

and to be clear: it's not even really about gerrymandering. Why do you think Republicans are DOING gerrymanders now? Because they've been breaking smaller rules for decades without any consequence, so they dont see why they shouldnt break this one. Nonresponse hasnt stopped them & it never will.

both major u.s. parties (and basically all parties in all democracies everywhere) have gerrymandered to different degrees, in different places, at different times. it’s always wrong, always anti-democratic, and always backfires one way or another

As a Texan, who has never one day in their life lived outside a gerrymander or in an actual democracy precisely because of the liberal reticence to stand up to these conservative tyrants, I respectfully say BS to this mindset.

This isn't true, and it's been a driver of adoption for things like proportional representation abroad. The U.S. system has not been the normal pattern for democracies since the ouster of Porfirio Diaz. The coordinated gerrymanders of 2010 were a norm-breaking tipping point. This is the backfiring.

In a system where a collection of 4 states can have 8 senators even though they’re collectively smaller than my county? And I’m not even in one of the biggest ones. What would you suggest?

As Newsom put it, it's a "emergency / break glass" issue. For California, the redistricting is temporary, and goes back to the bipartisan commission with the next census in 2030 -- by which time we can assume the emergency is over.

Okay. I believe you and think without context that could be a brave stance. But is it not also self defeating? You’re worried about backlash from a group that prematurely creates grievances out of nowhere specifically to justify harms to groups of citizens? Placating the them to avoid retribution?

i’m worried about backlash from virginian voters who see democrats they don’t like getting elected and re-elected due to gerrymandering and not popularity

I think you're both mostly right. As much as possible, we should be anti-gerrymander. But I can be anti-war and still fight back if attacked. Right now, so much of the country has GOP state governments that gerrymandering serves the GOP overall, over the next several cycles. And...

The Democrats would be better off opposing gerrymandering if only for their own credibility. But using it in the immediate term to show the GOP that they can be hit by it too may be reasonable in some states. Longer-term, though, I think it's going to hurt the Dems & help the GOP.

The anti-fascist take is that both parties are run by fascists and we should do whatever changes that.

As an American citizen; both parties are, both as ongoing criminal conspiracies and as functional subsidiaries of Likud, my enemy--not merely my opponent. Patriots should despise both, yet we are simultaneously obliged to do entryism to both. I'm not convinced gerrymandering doesn't entrench them.

If this were revenge you'd have a solid point. It's counteracting. If not for this it wouldn't be a level playing field, so the hypothetical you're setting up there doesn't apply.

The GOP has only been allowed to get this bad because they have played political hardball for so long they don’t have to be responsive to voters. The only way to change that is push back. If that means gerrymandering blue states and packing SCOTUS, so be it.

The problem with gerrymandering is politicians shouldn’t be able to choose their voters. If the voters approve of the gerrymandering in a statewide vote, I don’t understand what the problem is. Ideally, Congress would ban gmandering federally, but that can’t happen if we don’t have a majority.

If you can't win in a field where the other team is constantly cheating and the umpires have been bribed generously to allow it, well, you're not actually losing the game. And in that situation, anything you can do to dispel the aura of legitimacy your opps and the umpires claim is time well spent.

There's an easy solution: A bipartisan federal law requiring fair districting with oversight from a neutral (nonpartisan/bipartisan) team. …The Republicans won't go for it; they'd lose too many of their advantages. They don't want districts that accurately represent the state's population.

Democrats win with a level playing field. They don't win if the Republicans get to tilt it to meet their interests, and Democrats don't get to tilt it back. There's no way to make this level without support from SCOTUS. And this SCOTUS is not, apparently, interested in equitable representation.

Yes - because the House can impeach federal judges, including SCOTUS judges. And while a majority-R Senate is not likely to convict, judges might step down rather than having their record dragged into public view. Especially if it might open the way for lawsuits or criminal charges.

You think a level playing field is allowing Republicans to gerrymander red states with no repurcussions or consequences? Odd stance.

i don't want the states gerrymandered for revenge. i want the states gerrymandered to destroy the republican party root and branch, because if we don't do that it's all over.

Are you so bad at understanding politics to know it's tilted the other way for a decade? This literally makes shit fair. Until it's banned completely, fuck 'em.

The playing field is already tilted. You're literally saying "if GOP tilt the playing field in their direction, you're not allowed to tilt it back". And, in fact, their "tilting' has been an extremely successful solution for them! It works! We have to make it not work and force them to give it up

I know it makes some of you fuckers feel real self-righteous when you pull this "when they go low, we go high" bullshit, but it does not fucking work, Ty.

We don't *have* a level playing field, & we'll never get one if we can't wrest power from Republicans. They have no incentive to stop tilting it in their favor if the outcome is just that they get to keep winning by doing so. They will only ever oppose gerrymandering if & when it costs them power.

Our job is to create that situation for them, so that they finally turn on gerrymandering & support abolishing it, catching up to where Democrats are already.

that isn’t true. a bunch of republicans in michigan—including the consultant who DID all the gerrymandering for the gop in michigan, bob labrant—ended up leaving the party and/or becoming loudly anti-gerrymandering once they saw all the damage it had done

That a few politicos left the party or stopped supporting gerrymandering is not remotely the same thing as saying there's a level playing field. You're simply cherry picking a few remorseful politicos while eliding that the Republican Party is still broadly engaged in the endeavor.

If they gerrymander then our gerrymanders are *how the field gets levelled*. If we don't then we don't get to try the level playing field trick, do we? This isn't even some abstract logic puzzle, they have gerrymandered unopposed for years and the result has been entrenching minoritarian power!

Realistically we are not going to get out of the gerrymandering mess without some level of bipartisan input. So we can wait for Republicans to decide to ditch their own gerrymanders out of the goodness of their hearts, or we can make it in their best interest to cooperate in outlawing gerrymanders.

this will be like the fifth-most important election of the last six elections. if there was a “we must destroy democracy to save it” election, it already happened

If you can’t see that American democracy is already on the verge of extinction and that Democrats winning in 2026 & 2028 is pretty much the last and only way to save it, then you really have not been and still are not paying attention

It's not a level playing field, that's the point! You can't say "ok, one side's cheating, but your side keeps playing by the rules!" Nah, man. Cheating's bad, the Ds didn't start it - at least in this case, historically speaking :) - but as the lady said, we're gonna fucking finish it.

Man, this doesn't make sense even by your own argument! If one side is gerrymandering, then the other side then also doing so is actually balancing out the playing field. Allowing one side to gerrymander but not the other is the definition of an uneven playing field

That's all well and good but this measure isn't tilting the field the other way. It's one of many steps necessary to get the playing field back to level. To untwist something, you have to apply force in the other direction. That's just physics.

Counterpoint: the field is not currently level, and there is one party here who has made it their expressly-stated goal to not only maintain the imbalance, but worsen it significantly. Try again and account for Republicans this time.

It is bad. What's worse is: "We'll be principled and not gerrymander in Virginia while you gerrymander every red state to ensure we never get the US house again." And that's what was happening.
