Stupid goo goo nonsense. The only way to get fair districting is to pinch republicans in the mouth enough until they agree to fairness. Doing this with Callais days away from ripping up the VRA is so stupid I don’t know where to begin.

no actually, “we gerrymander as revenge for their gerrymander” is the bad stuff. if you can’t win with a level playing field, tilting the field is not a long- or even medium-term solution (and nationalizing state politics is also bad)

it's not revenge. Civil society is a bargain: you play by the rules, and I will play by the rules. If they break the rules and you continue playing by the rules, then that agreement fails because you've removed its enforcement mechanism. This isnt personal or emotional: it's thermodynamic.

and to be clear: it's not even really about gerrymandering. Why do you think Republicans are DOING gerrymanders now? Because they've been breaking smaller rules for decades without any consequence, so they dont see why they shouldnt break this one. Nonresponse hasnt stopped them & it never will.

both major u.s. parties (and basically all parties in all democracies everywhere) have gerrymandered to different degrees, in different places, at different times. it’s always wrong, always anti-democratic, and always backfires one way or another

As a Texan, who has never one day in their life lived outside a gerrymander or in an actual democracy precisely because of the liberal reticence to stand up to these conservative tyrants, I respectfully say BS to this mindset.

the thing is that gerrymandering in virginia doesn't un-gerrymander texas. what i keep saying is that i wish more dems around the country would work to un-do partisan gerrymandering rather than do it more

There has been a highly successful 15-year-plus effort to do exactly this, but you must recognize that it was galvanized by the highly coordinated Republican gerrymandering effort of 2010. 'Undoing' or 'doing it more' is a false symmetry; they don't flip with possession automatically.

This isn't true, and it's been a driver of adoption for things like proportional representation abroad. The U.S. system has not been the normal pattern for democracies since the ouster of Porfirio Diaz. The coordinated gerrymanders of 2010 were a norm-breaking tipping point. This is the backfiring.
