I've never been allowed in any community, I'm just here to call out @jay.bsky.team since Jack isn't on here. Not a fan of the fascism his company did to me. Or what @bsky.app did. So, anything that makes it easier for me to call them out would be cool. Thanks.
One more suggestion is to work on the logged-out experience+SEO. Being an open network is a big advantage vs others which have largely closed themselves off to webcrawling, etc. The logged out experience on bsky.app hasn't improved since the public launch. Lurking w/out an account is important.
Welcome to the network, Alex. My strongest possible request/recommendation is to integrate Reddit-style subcommunities into Bluesky in a "native" way. I was on Reddit *before* subreddits and it was just HN, not appealing to most. Without subreddits, they would never have reached 1 billion MAUs.
This is The Schizophrenic Problem that Twitter never solved but Reddit did. People have moods and the algorithm has no way of knowing your *current* one is. No one is going *ever* in the mood for everything. There needs to be a way to select into specific kinds of content and *avoid* other kinds.
1/ Hey Alex, wishing you great luck! I loved my time on the team there and am rooting for you guys. Reddit mostly nailed it with subreddits. The problems stem from them being a centralized and closed network. I've been on Reddit+Twitter since they launched and always believed they were merge-able.
Reddit is a closed network that wants to force-feed us ads, hold our own content hostage, force us to use their app, share our usage data with third-parties, etc. See this example, where they shutdown an app (Apollo) someone built to make using Reddit better that had 5 million installs:
Building @blebbit.app with this vision in mind, taking inspiration from Discord and FB Groups as well
Hi @jacob.gold would it be true to say that AT Proto should allow anyone to build a back end (and any number of user-facing products to run on it) that can do communities? I realise of course that right now the Bluesky team look like the ideal people to do this but theoretically anyone could, right?
Yes, I am building a platform for communities that lets them decide how they want to look and operate (so a one-size+fits-all choice is not dictated by the platform) @blebbit.app
Give everyone 𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁, not just 𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕜𝕖𝕣𝕤 like me who go through the effort.💁 Rich text is something 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 social media platforms frown upon... 𝘴𝘰 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘵!😁 I find it allows me to be a 𝘭𝘰𝘵 more expressive and I'd 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 stoop to ALL CAPS!🙄 I'm using this Chrome extension but there are other ways.👇
#BlueSkyHacks Here's two: B̲l̲u̲e̲S̲k̲y̲C̲o̲l̲o̲r̲P̲a̲l̲l̲e̲t̲S̲w̲a̲p̲p̲e̲r̲ Lets you change @bsky.app's look. 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲 chromewebstore.google.com/detail/blues... 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝘅 addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo... 𝔾 ℝ𝕋𝔽: ℙ𝕝𝕒𝕚𝕟 𝕥𝕠 ℝ𝕚𝕔𝕙 𝕋𝕖𝕩𝕥 Add rich text like 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 and 𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘴 to 𝓹𝓸𝓼𝓽𝓼. 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲 chromewebstore.google.com/detail/g-rtf...
That's true, I did notice my screen reader skips the rich text parts but that could be overcome easily enough. As a tinker, my first approach is always 'this can be fixed'. I have 10% vision & have modified many computers for accessibility for disabled folk so it's important to me to get that right.
I don't think you need any new products right now when the site does bs like this: bsky.app/profile/woot... Get ride of the Facists and Transphobes, it's an awful look
bsky already has this feed. bsky.app/profile/skyf...
