A 2025 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, Omar Yaghi is the son of Palestinian refugees who grew up in Jordan. He just left the US to move to China after raising concerns about rising anti-immigrant sentiment, like the kind shown here. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/china-than...

It turns out punishing coup plotters actually is an effective deterrent!

Celebrity deaths almost never affect me emotionally, and I only knew of Eric Bauza from, of all the obscure things, his appearances in the recent string of Star Wars live readings (his performance as Jar Jar Binks was surprisingly innovative?), and yet somehow even that was enough. He was incredible

Why has everyone forgotten the Bush era?

Anon Opin@anonopin.bsky.social

You couldn't make the West Wing today as the idea of a moral, ethical and intelligent President would be laughed at.

Replying to @normative.bsky.social

Which is just to say: we are either at or very near a point where AI makes it possible to just actually monitor everyone simultaneously.

I’m not sure the Panopticon is still a relevant metaphor. The point there was that a concealed machinery of surveillance could make everyone behave AS IF surveilled, even though the watchers could only observe a few people at once. We seem to have effectively superceded that technical limitation.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

The Panopticon was a thought experiment but the technology is now genuinely there to make it a reality and we have to grapple with what that means for us as a society. /yes, I am aware that others countries had this debate and went with total surveillance decades ago.

This is a pattern that bedevils technological systems of all sorts. Actions taken as singular instances might be judged to be benign. The same action taken as a pattern over time or at societal scale becomes fraught of it not altogether harmful.

Frank Pasquale@frankpasquale.bsky.social

When one researcher has an agent email others for help, it may not be too annoying. But there are obvious problems with scale here, and I don't think the AI firms have thought them through. www.science.org/content/arti... At a bare minimum, the agent needs to identify as AI upfront.

Kind of a buried lede in the results of this Supreme Court approval rating poll from Marquette: Overall support for Supreme Court expansion, which even Democratic politicians were dismissing as "radical" just a few years ago, is now at 53 percent today.marquette.edu/2026/09/marq...

My confidence in decision to never even open that website has only increased.

the temu app will be studied for generations. i opened the app. here’s my unedited, nearly two-minute launch sequence. i was just searching for a bookshelf

My kids are listening to a Sesame Street record from 1970 and let me tell you it was a bold move to put Ernie and Kermit on the thing (different songs though) with no visual. So much of this is Jim Henson and Frank Oz doing slightly different voices

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
