A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

It’s wild that we have a society like this. Like we’re just not doing anything about it. We’re just kind of watching it collapse.

This report is genuinely overwhelming, in terms of the evidence both against Trump and of a ham-fisted cover-up. Including one instance in which Ghislaine Maxwell was actually about to mention one of Trump's young accusers and Todd Blanche told her to stop talking. The media response is "yawn."

It is genuinely weird that Trump has spent his whole life surrounded by extraordinary wealth and still has the absolute trashiest, tackiest taste imaginable.

Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

He obviously really cares about being perceived as “classy,” if only when it comes to decor, and you’d think he’d have picked up something by sheer osmosis, but no. He still has the aesthetic sensibility of Powerball Winner Homer Simpson.

I get they're inextricably intertwined but I kind of feel like leaning so much into how he was the longtime best buddy of the world's most notorious sex criminal has given it something of the feel of a political gotcha rather than the important part, which is that the president raped people.

It is a made up story full of gods and monsters and magic. Why are we even talking about “historical accuracy”? You could throw in a rapping echidna on a skateboard and it would still be about as historically accurate as the original story.

The vile attacks on Amy Acton need to be seen in the context of a party that *needs* people to believe women fabricating sexual assaults is common as rainwater. Because it’s pretty much the only way to evade the conclusion that the president is a rapist.

That’s *without* factoring in everything we know about Trump’s character that might affect our judgment of how plausible it is that he’d be guilty of that sort of behavior.

Just to make this concrete: if I picked a grain of sand somewhere on the earth’s surface, and you went to a random location on the planet with a pair of tweezers and by sheer luck picked up that very grain of sand first try, that would be MORE statistically likely than Trump not being a rapist.

I mean, it DID look rigged. Heavily. In Bolsonaro’s favor. He lost anyway.

I know we are all inured, but this is an appalling and unacceptable thing for a US president to say about another country's election.

Just a little back of the envelope math: Most research finds the rate of SA reports determined to be false after investigation to be 4-6 percent. Many can’t be conclusively proven or disproven, so let’s even imagine it might be as high as 12%. Applying that rate to Trump…

As many have noted, the Acton ad was a massive political own-goal from which even many Republicans recoiled in disgust. You can’t really explain Trump & Vance doubling down as any kind of rational electoral strategy.

But culturally, they need a world in which sexual assault claims are presumptively false. Because if you acknowledge that the great majority are true, it becomes pretty much impossible to maintain that the dozens of accusations against Trump are all fabrications.

It's really damning. The accusations are numerous and well-supported. But I was really struck by the descriptions of Trump's behavior -- the name dropping, strong-arming, and attempts to buy off silence. His gross rivalry with Epstein. It's all so familiar. It's shit he's been doing his entire life.

It's... also not particularly novel for Americans who DO follow this sort of thing to be happy when autocrats in other countries are defeated? I'm just barely old enough to recall the ouster of Pinochet being broadly celebrated in international coverage as a victory for human rights & democracy.

Andy Craig@andycraig.bsky.social

It's wrong in a more basic way: if you're encountering "so many" Americans who have a strong interest in the Brazilian election, it's a reminder your personal social media feed is a highly unrepresentative niche of people with at least a 95th percentile level of interest in politics generally.

I guess the charitable gloss on this is that one should probably be circumspect about whether you really know the best outcome in a country whose politics you're only familiar with cursorily and at a distance? Which fair enough. But there are cases where the less-bad alternative is pretty clear.
