I haven't written any effusive letters to Trump, don't worry — but I realized this week that I have a unique perspective on this Natalie Harp business. Thanks to @newrepublic.com for granting space to write about it.

"On some days, Trump's arch would even shade the grave and eternal flame of JFK." 10/10 no notes metaphor
President Trump wants to build a 250-foot-tall arch. If completed, it will cast shadows on many graves and monuments in nearby Arlington National Cemetery, the @washingtonpost.com's 3-D analysis found. On some days, Trump's arch would even shade the grave and eternal flame of JFK.
One would hope that watching billionaires spend hand over fist to try to save Republicans this fall will cause corporate Dems to get religion about laying heavy taxes on the rich. One would hope.
It's hard to believe but Democrats ran for decades against the "Bush tax cuts" and then made most of them permanent. Then ran against the "Trump tax cuts" and then didn't repeal them either.
If they let the 1% pocket the wealth they've reaped under Trump — thanks to tax breaks, attacks on the IRS, etc. — Dems will find their overgrown fortunes aimed at them in a future cycle. Simple as.

- I … sorry: “don’t produce literature”? - nobody tell this asshole where our numerals came from — deal? – if he needed to name something that doesn’t produce science, he could just have introduced himself.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
“It’s totally weird to care so much about an election in another country”: oh, well someone should tell Trump.
BREAKING WaPo: Brazil's right-wing Flávio Bolsonaro just effectively conceded defeat to the incumbent left-wing president — minutes after Trump indicated he would not intervene on his behalf.
Saw this stenciled on the sidewalk along Hillhurst in front of Maru on Saturday, and I am _not_ surprised that some half-assed PAC with a lazy-looking, built-in-ChatGPT site is behind it.
Nithya Raman's campaign just filed this Ethics complaint (w/EXHIBITS!) against Thrive LA, accusing the PAC of spray-painting the floors with "Poop Zone, courtesy of Nithya Raman" w/o disclosure disclaimers, and for AI impersonations of Raman's voice, etc. docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Trump's odd recent rally rhetoric is ultimately beside the point; surpassing anything else, his sexual orientation is 'nonconsensual.' Violating boundaries thrills him. Even his talk of Husted makes treats him as a slab of meat — there for Trump to ogle and manhandle.
Beyond disgusted by even more rape allegations against the President of the United States. "In total, more than 25 different women...have independently accused Donald Trump of rape, sexual assault, or other sexual misconduct." Report w/ new details: democrats-judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.
I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.
Right, re: the below — and this is why the Senate rules and other veto points are so toxic to Dem interests. "We can just do things, if we elect 60 senators who agree that 51 senators of 100 should be enough to pass laws, but tradition …" is a windy excuse for not using lawmaking power.
I think the lesson from Lula is not never talk about the opposition; it's articulate a positive vision that's basically, We Can Just Do Things. That's why Mamdani-ism is so popular - voters have an intrinsic sense that their electeds have agency they're not using

one handy thing the CCP and Putin have demonstrated is you can just ban these companies from operating in your country. replacements will sprout up extremely fast
In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

The trouble here: to separate 'accountability' & 'prices are too high,' as we can see Patrick Ruffini doing here, is self-serving subterfuge. Why are prices high? Tariffs, fiscal deterioration's effect on interest rates, starting a stupid war in the Gulf … all stuff that people can fault Trump for.
It really is too bad that more high-profile Dems didn't come to Elissa Slotkin's defense last week. A huge amount rids on whether the narrative we propound about the election is 1) Dems won to hold Trump accountable or 2) Dems won because prices are too high. 🧵 www.offmessage.net/p/wheres-the...

Public offerings that give one person & their heirs perpetual free rein over a company — able to mismanage to the tune of billions at a time, with impunity — need to be significantly restricted, if not regulated from existence.
A recent securities filing spotlighted what triggered Mark Zuckerberg’s months-long power battle with board directors at Meta — a fight that sparked not-so-veiled threats from Zuckerberg and led board members to contemplate quitting.
A relieving 'closed a door, opened a window' outcome — except that a 3 year old, for goodness sake, should never have had parents calling police on him to close the door.
I spoke to the mom of the 3-year-old soccer star who was left "thinking he did something wrong" after a league official called police "due to a disturbance between parents" The youth sports league said they launched a review and reached out to the family

I need two caipirinhas, stat: one to savor the moment with, and one to toss into these jackholes’ faces.
Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

One of the most effective things Obama could do for the party is let it rip like this all year long. He's so good, but he saves it for rallies a few weeks before elections like it's a severely-limited resource and that's just not how the modern communications environment has evolved.

The Ramaswamy campaign not only tried to capitalize on a child rape victim, they did it by using an old homeless woman who—while vile—is in no mental shape to adequately understand the stakes. And did they pay her? Either answer is bad.
