Genuinely impressive how in a fairly short period of time, the Windows install I have on my dual-boot desktop for the occasional testing and graphics work has become much buggier, less usable, and less reliable than Desktop Gnome, which hasn't improved one iota in about a decade.

Part of me wants the LLM coding discourse to be a little more nuanced. But anything but contempt benefits Big Tech I suppose. It's such a nightmare.

Of course all of these are in the Brutal Doom mode. Call og Duty Bro Doom. It makes a lot of sense that these people also respond to that aesthetic I guess...

Doom modding is so accessible, the iteration time when doing it by hand is *so fast*. And one thing is rolling slop on your own screen. But why the fuck would want you to share it?

this is also why you can’t trust what you see on any platform as representative of broader thought or consensus. you are being shown what they want you to see, and now more than ever, that conforms to exactly one worldview

Meta took down the No Kings instagram; TikTok banned the Musk documentary account for supposedly violating its political posting policies. A reminder that platforms are owned by the wealthiest of people, control the means of media distribution, & put their thumbs on the democracy scale as they wish

this is one thing where it's gonna be hard for people doing this by hand to continue to derive meaning from AI is just automatically "solving" problems people have been working on in teams for years in a matter of hours + barging into open source repositories & stealing / "helping" their work

A video game reverse engineering community has shut down because many games can now be trivially reverse engineered and decompiled with AI: "The community aspect of decompilation has been broken." www.404media.co/video-game-r...

I wrote about this whole silly saga. Using AI for 10 minutes probably has little/no impact on your cognition, despite the viral online claims. gidmk.substack.com/p/does-using...

In our course and book _Calling Bullshit_, we posit that If something seems too good, or too bad, to be true, it probably is. Now as a college professor I'm pretty confident that overreliance can AI can harm our thinking ability, but just ten minutes of use? Let's dig into this this study a bit.

I was reporting this out too, and while it sucks to get scooped, @duckvalentine.bsky.social did an absolutely incredible job here. a cautionary tale that I hope future organizers in games and other industries will learn from

Back in May, Double Fine employees petitioned for a union. Two weeks later, that petition was withdrawn. What happened? https://kotaku.com/inside-the-failed-fight-to-unionize-one-of-gamings-most-idealized-studios-2000742755

I gave Braid an A+ back in my press days. I spent 100s of hours working on The Witness at PlayStation, fighting for it, getting it into conferences, and being Jon's personal wrangler. I even coined "Metroidbrainia" after it. I will not be buying Order of the Sinking Star, and neither should you.

The turn most software devs have taken shouldn't have surprised me. Well before LLMs, most devs I've met had the soul of a landlord Sometimes "landlord trying to be cool". Sometimes "landlord who wants suffering with the rent" But both see the world with the eyes of a rent-seeker

It’s an algorithm that uses complex matrix math to generate probabilistic output one token at a time for a given an input prompt. The idea that it feels pain is comical, and running a story like this is as embarrassing as it is irresponsible.

Can the new cutting-edge AI models feel pain? They at least behave as if they do, according to a recent study. The work, which has not been peer reviewed, has divided #AI researchers. https://scim.ag/4hHU6BA

I am watching an old DVD and it really takes me back to when I used to watch the same movies over and over again. Anything is more interesting if you obsess over it really. Physical media totally encourage this. Being finite objects you can explore.

Also, you can't really go frame by frame on a streaming app. Sure you can in VLC, but who remembers the controls. Dedicated disc players are great they encourage being a movie nerd.
