it's so weird how the vanguard of fascism is freedom of speech regarding Palestine, trans rights, and immigration, all things that the left has been screaming at the Democrats to take a better stand on and the Dems declined.

Also someone publish my A Memory Called Empire board game

rowan kaiser@rowan.monster

all this said the best thing that could be done for a "new Mass Effect" is to make a science fiction epic RPG that's built on the SF of the last 20 years the way ME was built on the SF of the 20 years before it

We already GOT our Startide Rising/Babylon 5/Hyperion shooty RPG, and it was a great time, now it's time for an Expanse/Gideon the Ninth/Memory Called Empire slashy RPG

had a facebook friend tell a story about how she was submitting a headshot to be put up on a website for her professional career, and the guy who got the headshot ran it through AI and posted a completely different image of her than the one she'd submitted and told her she should be "honored"

i just call everything "pop" now. did i enjoy clicking on that thing and seeing/hearing it react? did it make a CLUNK sound or do something cool that made it tangible and enjoyable to interact with repeatedly? thats "pop", baby

My take is that this is part of why "Metroidvania" is a bad term, at least as it has been adopted. Its original incarnation - limited to describing Castlevanias specifically - makes sense, but looking at Super Metroid vs SotN presents very few actual similarities.

rowan kaiser@rowan.monster

but that's also got me trying to figure out what the difference between the Metroid-centered search-action game and the Castlevania-centered one is. Is it just melee versus missile combat? Platforming intricacy? Narrative focus?

a huge part of this is that in game crit *feel* is absolutely essential to talking about the experience of playing a game but it's always, always, always easier to talk about the systems because that's a Thing/Not-Thing where feel is like "I dunno I like it when you smash stuff"

Metroid is about adapting to what the game gives *you*, Castlevania is about finding what combination of tools you find works *for* you? Kind of.

The only thing in metroid that makes you need precise shot timing is when you're shooting while jumping.

In contrast, SOTN has difference reaches / swings / warmups per weapon type. Secondaries aren't powerful because they hit hard but because they have novel attack modes. Dagger is a gun, axe is good vs flying, holy water good vs slow, etc

I think I get what you're saying. Metroid's attacks are all linear and have 0 warm up. Theres no gameplay difference in attacks and combat challenge comes from platforming and positioning exclusively

I think we underestimate the appeal of antigambling politics because every problem gambler is surrounded by 3-10 people who are absolutely sick of their shit.

A few people are saying that Castlevania has RPG systems and Metroid doesn't and yes that is a thing but what I'm looking for here is FEEL. A Castlevania game (classic) tends to feel like it has somewhat more constrained movement and combat. you're checking frames for swings, or pixels for jumps

there is, perhaps, an element of awkwardness that exists that you as the player are consistently fighting against. Learning how to turn that big sword swing arc from a liability into a benefit, for example, is a big part of the Castlevania experience

this is an easy thing to describe as a difference, and it does exist, but I'm not actually certain it's the difference that matters in how the games FEEL

I thought it was the more RPG-like equipment system that accentuated the Vania

Might be time for me to play Super Metroid again (for the sixth attempt? seventh?) to see if I can figure out how to put this into words. Or if there even is a "this" to put into words at all

but they opened it up by saying that their all-time favorite was Hollow Knight and that's just so far from the way I think about what I like in this these that I just stopped watching. like almost every much-loved search-action game I bounce off of is a Soulsyvania. Just doesn't seem to work for me

which makes me think that there's really three different interacting subcategories, the Soulsyvania, the METROIDvania, and the MetroidVANIA and I'm very much a partisan of the latter

Watching some Babylon 5 tonight to remember Walter Koenig. I wish he'd gotten more chances to play villains. Koenig had a great range, but he was born to play smug bastards. He was a true master of the art. RIP to a real one.

PoR and RD have my favorite scale of the series. No need to abstracted it out with Village or mountain tiles. Just lean into the fact you have only 8 peeps and you are fighting in streets or on a boat. It actually helps sell the games narrative better.

I got overwhelmed with Fortune's Weave and decided to give Path of Radiance a try while I was borrowing a Switch 2 and like, I feel like this might the best art direction a game has ever had? Basically every part of it (except the 3D battle models) looks incredible and perfectly fitting the tech

*me, having discovered who G Flip is watching the Women's Asian Cup Final earlier this year, sneering at people acting like they don't know who these people are* uncultured swine

The Cut@thecut.com

Chrishell Stause announced that she and G Flip have separated after three years of marriage, adding that she doesn’t ‘have all the information or the reasons.’

I then went to look up if they were a lesbian because you know that's what you do as soon as you encounter a new artist and their Wikipedia said "G Flip identifies as a drummer primarily" which I thought was incredible but also yes nonbinary and sapphic

this is purely my own gut feeling and i’d love actual devs input, but i get the sense that on top of everything else collapsing, one of the big struggles in games is that the Normal Iterative Sequel, reasonably scoped and made on a quick schedule, seems to sell like six copies now

yeah no answer is actually good here because the urge for the Franchise to continue regardless of everything else is inherently anti-art

it is a very strange argument to say that Mass Effect could only possibly be made by Bioware when we just had the world go crazy over Baldur's Gate 3 made by Europeans a few years ago

Like there's a moral and historical crime in closing Bioware for Saudi money, don't get me wrong, but it's also been a decade and a half since an unambiguously beloved Mass Effect game was released and the studio probably Ship of Theseus'd itself like three times at least since

in fact I would not be shocked if there were multiple studios that had more ex-BioWare employees who worked on the original ME trilogy than BioWare itself did at the end

look, there was no feeling in video games like walking into a snowy village in Daggerfall with this music playing on Fantasy Christmas. just an incredible moment.
